ATI X800 vs. 9800 Pro

I've got an ATI Radeon 9800PRO 256MB card right now... that system check meter someone posted the other day put my system beyond the recommended range. However, it also said the recommended card was an x800 pro when you roll over the little question mark.

Anyway, I'm wondering, is it really worth a few hundred bucks to upgrade to the x800 over the 9800pro, for HL2? How much will the game truly need?

That system check is complete BS, aimed at making you spend money....

Your 9800 is fine.

The 9800 Pro, especially with 256MB RAM on the card, will be plenty to play the game. I wouldn't say it's worth the upgrade but you would see an increase in performance.

certainly not worth it
buying the best video card every year or so is nothing smart if you ask me
unless youre really loaded of course.

Yeah, if you were to buy anything, you'd want the x800 XT, as it outperforms the pro quite some. But I think your 9800 Pro is fine for now.

9800 Pro is what they used to create HL2 - since then, better cards have come out. Your card is good to go for another 1-2 years (for future games coming out). And with the ATI drivers getting better and better....

no it isnt... my 9800 pro 128 does a nice job of getting things done but its not always a consistent framerate.

if you have the money, of course the x800 is recommended over the 9800pro. do you like higher resolutions, lots of AF and AA and higher overall framerates? if you don't appreciate these things or they are negligible than it probably wouldn't be wise to upgrade to an x800.

i wanted to run hl2 at 1600x1200 2xAA and 8xAF, so thats part of the reason i got this card, i just can't stand resolutions under 1280x960.

its really personal preference and how much you are willing to spend, some are ok with 640x480 lowest detail, some are only ok with 1600x1200. both aren't wrong
