I don't know what causes the problem. I can confirm however that it's NOT hardware related.

I had the crash/no texture problem on one computer but tried my other computer. Other computer was fine. Copied over all files from 2nd computer to first and BINGO all was well.

Apparently the problem is something to do with the unlocking/unpacking of the encrypted files.

So if I delete the HL2 dir in the Steam folder, and reunpack, should work?

I believe I copied the preload from one computer to the other. However, I am not positive. Have played through first 30-45 minutes of the game no problems, so it is in fact good to go. I think at WORST you'll have to re-preload.

EDIT: Someone post the COMPLETE (and I do mean complete) list of all files, separated by folder you have in the halflife2 directory. I'll compare to what I have and can host the files tomorrow for a while if need be. (Attach it as a text file attachment rather then sticking it into a forum post.)

EDIT: Also post a list of all the .gcf files you have.

Now wait a minute. If the same files worked on one rig but not the other how can you claim it's NOT hardware related?? In that scenario I would be even more inclined to believe there was some sort of hardware problem OR software glitch as a result of a certain hardware configuration. My point. That test really proves nothing.

Possible fix:

I went through the whole Driver Cleaner process, wiping my old drivers and etc. I installed the latest official Radeon drivers (4.11). Then I realized there was stuff being started that I didn't approve of, so I opened up msconfig and unchecked a truly surprising number of programs I didn't want.

I don't know which of these caused the change, but before all this, I could get through about half a level before texture glitchies showed up. Since then, I've gone through two or three flawlessly, plus it seems to run a bit better.

I had the low-end glitchies, not the giant blue checkerboards and wireframes, but this may solve both problems.

I'll post again if the glitches show up again.

Exhaulted1:

He got it to work by copying files over....

how is that a hardware problem1?!

I've had HL2 working on 2 pcs, I haven't seen any crashes/bugs yet. It must ultimately be hardware/driver issues.

Before anyone mentions it, btw, I realize this doesn't sync whatsoever with Ahnteis's experience - I didn't redownload or anything, and (I presume) he didn't change any computer settings. But there you have it. :)

It's possible I've just moved into a less texture-intensive area of the game, of course, but I don't think so.

Scratch that, glitches are back. Well, it was nice while it lasted.

Didn't change any computer settings. Computers are very similar.
Just copied over files.

Please also post the fileSIZES of the .GCF files.

Here may be the reason for the original problem, and why it was fixed when he copied files from the other system. On HL2Fallout, they are reporting that any game in the play games list that is incompletely downloaded can mess up other games, and that HL:S or CS:S being incomplete really messes up HL2. TO check if your games are stuck partway, go to play games, right click on each game and pick properties -- any that are less than 100% (but over 0) need to be finished to resolve some of the issues. It is possible that his second computer either had finished these downloads, or had never started them/never had them, and this is why copying the files fixed it.

First number is the checksum, second number is the filesize. If you happen to have cygwin (or feel like downloading it) you can run cksum and check to see if they're the same files.

If Cygwin has md5, I wasn't able to find it. Sigh.

Don't have cygwin, but filesizes are:

I've got HL2 off steam and it doesn't work...

...so I'm gonna go to the shops and buy HL2 there aswell *sigh*

If the shops version works then its obviously not hardware problems
