Australia's government just announced they are paying people to go there and help volunteer, and also are giving 1 billion dollars towards the Tsnuami

Wow, it seems the countries are having a competition to see who can give the most money =/

It's beginning to seem like a big competition.

EDIT: Looks like I was beaten.

So is it okay to start bashing USA yet or not? I mean, Sprafa, go go go!

I believe Australia is aiming for 1 billion, since we don't have that much to give really...
theres a massive charity thing going on here at the moment though.

EDIT: no wait, I'm wrong.. Go us!

Bush gave $10,000. Whoop-dee-farking-doo!

One billion Australian dollars? That's an awful lot of money, even when the exchange rate's taken into account. So bravo!
Do you have a link for that claim? It's not that I flat out don't believe you, it's just that people made the same claim about the US but at no point did I see anything to verfiy those claims.

I apologise - very inattentive of me. <Ahem>

hehe

"This just in: China, Russia, The EU and the United States have launched a joint-offensive against the Commonwealth of Australia for its involvment in "being annoying". Operation Not-Jealous-Really has seen the first use of nuclear weapons on an enemy since WWII. "

Breaking News! The EU has just pledged 2 billion Euros to the victims of the Australian Nuclear Holocaust.
A spokesman said: "Beat that, you stingy Yank pig-dogs!" He proceeded to jump on the nearest table and gave the finger to any non-EU diplomats whilst throwing scrunched up bits of paper at them.

And in 6 months, asia has all our money.

Yeah thats what i ment... us as in the verb 'us'...

Me being australian. Go us meaning go australia.

Though you almost undoubtably knew what i was meaning and were joking... i'll shut up now.

The intentions are good, yes. IMO, eventually it is going to be a bitch fight of some people throwing money at the victums while totally forgetting the point behind giving the money

In which case they really won't care about the motive, just as long as they get the desperately required aid.

Tell me this- why couldn't we have this sort of funding drive to solve longer standing issues? :flame:

Because the news channel smell $$$ to do coverage on this story =P

Ok, now I am just saying random things...

Cause no one cares :p

We can't let this happen. Britain, it's time to reclaim Australia!

Sad but true.

What's even worse is how often smaller attempts to solve the AIDS crisis/world hunger continually fail, due to the mismanagement by corrupt governments or failure to comprehend educational programmes. We've tried to underline the importance of contraception (not just to limit population, but to stop the spread of HIV) but many civillians continue to ignore us, due to reasons as poor as fashion sense or religion.

So the sad fact is investment is limited, because many people get the distinct feeling that their charity is being squandered.

If you think I'm pessimistic, you should encounter this one woman I met who felt Africa should be ignored, as disease and starvation would eventually reduce the population enough to reasonably help

This whole tsunami thing was just a biiiiiig publicity stunt, it never really happened. You guys know that right......right?

It's a shame it takes this scale of a thing to make people sit up and take notice. Look at all the misery in poverty stricken lives everyday. I don't see $$$ going to them that often.
However hopefully it will continue to bring out the positive generous side of people in the future.
There's no real need for all this pain and suffering to happen, although you do get bad things happening.

I'd best not go into further detail, i'll just start rambling about the cruel nature of humanity or something.

Can anyone confirm what I've heard on my local radio station news that the United States private sector has donated over 1 billion dollars in donations?

She's right. It feel teribble saying this but she is right. People used to have a lot kids there because a lot of them would die but now because of modern medicine they stay alive and the population is to big and there is not enough food and you get those starvations every year in afrika.

+ if you support aids prevention programs you're right to think that your maney is wasted, cause a lot of men won't wear condoms for the reasons you mentioned + because they think it's just a trick so that they have less babies, by all the aid we give we are just prolonging their sufforing.
Either we invest much more, which would be wonderfull but we are to busy with uour own problems to worry about them unfortunatly or we let them be and let nature restore the balance in the long run that would be better.
It's much better to give aid to polio research then aids cause they have no reason to not accept those treatments and also to give money not to prevention of aids but for research on how to cure it, cause then your money would not be wasted, cause people who have aids are a little more down to earth and will accept it.

think of it this way, if u are a surviver/victim of the disaster, do u really care if theres bitch fights over who offers more money? :p

infact, i hope alot of countries get into this "bitch fight" because its all going to a good cause.. well i hope :)

The government has sent 1 billion, donations 100 million and by stingy cooperate businesses 16 million from Australia

Germany has given 890 million, Japan 700 million, America has given 590 million, UK 160 million, thats all i can remember.

Did you guys hear that michael schumacher gave 7 million out of his own pocket? That's quite a lot even for him...
