Australia gives 1 billion dollars to aid

Can anyone confirm what I've heard on my local radio station news that the United States private sector has donated over 1 billion dollars in donations?
Something like that. I heard it was a considerable amount more than the corporations are handing out.

Also, a bunch of celebrities and singers are getting together and singing a song to raise money for the tsunami victims. Sure, they COULD just hand over millions of dollars out of their own pocket, but there's no publicity in that!

I hate it when people say "Ooo we're giving them all this money, they never like us *winge winge*"

Here's a god reason why they hate us:

In most countries with this third world debt going on, they're paying off interest now. INTEREST! We are preventing them from making their country better by taking money off them. They deserve every penny, tsunami or not.

Bravo Autralia!

And I'm guessing that comparitively, quite a few people here gave more than Bush. I might be wrong, I just hate Bush, fancied a dig :p

EDIT: Anyone read private eye this week? They had a great piss take of this whole "be popular by giving money"

TSUNAMI SPECIAL
AREN'T WE MARVELLOUS
The great news coming out of the admittedly sad Indian Ocean disaster is theat the Daily Mail Flood appeal is a huge success.
Loads of ordinary Daily Mail readers are giving money to our Daily Mail appeal (rather than just giving it to the charities direct) and, even better, lots of celebrities are very generously allowig us to put their names on the front page of the Daily Mail in return for a donation. So, hats off to ourselves at the Daily Mail for our amazing self promotion.

I agree ...look at the concert for Bangladesh in the 70's (same circumstances but if my memory is correct close to 350,000 people died)

George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo starr, Billy Preston performed in concert and recorded an album to help out the victems of the bangladesh floods ...it's just a matter of time before the britney "we should always listen to our president no matter what" spears and christina aguilera's of this world plan to do something to help the victems of the tsunami ...any day now ...they're social activists they are ..so preoccupied with important issues like ..."getting my baby back" and proving "I'm not so innocent" that they're just bound to do something provacative to help humanity

All that money to the Tsunami victims, yet how much goes to Aid relief in Africa, famine relief in Africa, negotiating peace talks and helping the civilians caught in war torn Africa?
