Automatic update frustration

My steam automatic updates mean that I can't play HL2 in offline mode. It is 99% downloaded but the steam moniter says it is complete and has stoped the download. I can connect to the internet, then turn on HL2 and then disconnect but I can't for garry's mod, and I just got the HL source addon

i would personally try the steam forums... oh and no ones helping because you have 666 posts!

Try shutting down Steam (right-click on the tray icon and select "Exit") then restart it. Sometimes that's enough to kick-start it into downloading the rest.

I always have steam off when I'm not using it. it slows down my internet and other programs, even in ofline mode.
My posts are no longer at 666

I found that you actually have to play the game for a while, while still connected to the net to complete the download.
Learnt the hard way when i first updated hl2
