how on earth do i get an image to be small enough to use as an avatar? the lowest i can get is 56k

i use photoshop and the image is only 50 by 50 pixels and i save on the lowest quality, but it's still 56k.

can anyone help?

Post the image here and I'm sure someone can do it for you (as well as explain how they did it.)

If you've got botoshop, just **** around in the "save for web" browser.

PNG files are your friend.

PNG files you say... iiiiinteresting..

i have no idea which files are good for what. i just assumed that bmp's jpeg's and gif's were the smallest.

and the preset avatars are gifs and only 4 kb's. HOW??? but i'll mess around with the save for web thing.

i can't do it now though cos i'm at work and don't have photoshop here. is there any way to do it in paint? i'm guessing no.

everyone has paint
open in ms paint
go to attributes
change to the appropriate size
save as filename.jpg
use (as long as it's not porn...)

bliink, that doesn't work, the files are still too big. thanks john, i'll try that. i know this was a dumb question but hey, if you don't know, you don't know.

my mistake - the correct and tedious way to do it in paint is to go to stretch/skew and change the values until you see in attributes that you are real close to the correct dimensions
then changing the attribute dimensions will not affect the selected picture much if at all

Well there you go.

With PNGs, isn't whitespace transparent?

look at my perty face.. LOOK AT IT!! IT'S ****ING PERTY!!

Mine's pertier. Come on, no one can resist the harsh, craggy, rugged beauty of Sigmund Freud's face - beauty like that of the sharp rocks that line the jutting hillsides of Scotland, snowcapped peaks glittering in the cold morning air, dark crevices and gulleys promising mystery and excitement.

if I can get a 25 mb pic that is 1200 x 1200 to be less than 50k so can you

open photoshop, open file, go to image > image size ..read the number it says under resolution ....it should be NO more than 72 pixels/inch

now go to file > save for web ..click the image size tab ..adjust height and width if need be, make sure you click the "constrain proportions" box

go to settings ..set to jpg, png and finally gif (gif will be the smallest file but wont look that great as it works best with solid colours with limited detail) and then hit save ..dont fiddle with the other settings as you'll screw up your image ..just click save...now if you followed what I've posted your file should be no more than 10k-20k

c'mon guys, you're making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be. Open up the pic in mspaint, hit control a, and grab the edges and shrink it down to 50x50 pixels. It helps if the original pic is relatively square, though.
