HAHAHAH, just kidding.. I was acutally wondering about the latest tech video.. you know how you can see basically all of city17 ie:skyscrapers buildings the whole bit.. do you think everything you see there will be playable.. ie: no invisible walls. and enterable buildings..

Post thoughts :bounce:

I think the fortress tingy wingy will be blocking you

Its just a pretty background, only the closest 1-2 buildings are in 3d... Something that I did see when checking it again was that the combine fortress is working in the background :)

i think the far bits you can see in the video is just a 3d skybox, so it isnt actually physical geometry that you can walk around in. Not positive tho

It would be insanely boring/infuriating if you had to enter each and every building you passed to make sure you weren't missing something.

hmm, wouldnt sound that strange to me if they werent...if the maps in HL2 are way bigger in then in BF...well then the city map we saw should be a peace of cake...as long as enemys dont get loaded in the entire city but just in one part or so... it think its prefectly possible to see the combine fortress working from over a loarge distance

Hey, they had 5 years, I want surprises!
The shiny monster shown is actually Alyx's father.

Looked pretty "walkable".. i guess its going to be a big surprise ..i hope :)

ferd i think the default biggest map size in hl2 is smaller than in BF, but you can get it more or less bigger by scaling the units down. but that would be in a mod, not default hl2

No it doesnt lie. Before writing it I did a scientific test on it. I walked out the window. I indeed feel to the ground as I thought I would do. So it isnt walkable.

yea . look at the shape of it!

hahha j/k

surprise!!!: gordon got a hair cut and black mesa was sent to xen. good enough for ya? lol

The city will surely be smaller than City 17.

They have pointed out that not all buildings seen can be walked in and stuff.

I would expect 80% of buildings to be functional as a pleasant surprise.

I wouldn't be more surprised if you could go in all of them, then again there are some buildings you see that you can never get to....

I think at least 2 city blocks of that scene are walkable.

I'd say its perfectly possible that, that scene is quite playable---because will still don't know the what the max map size numbers are? so its anybody's guess.---since valve has done so much work with source, it would be naive to think that it is'nt possible to render such large maps (or bigger than i.e BF1942 maps)

[edit] its quite possible that source uses the same method of rendering large maps as the D3 engine.-splitting up larger maps into smaller portions and connecting them via 'portasl'-this way you can 'see' the whole map, but since the map has been split up...for example it only loads up probs/enemies and such in the section the player moves around in atm.

[correct me if i'm wrong here guys...]

Weve been over this a million times. Its even officialy been said by valve. the maps are not as big as bf42 in HL2.....the doesnt mean things cant be scaled to be larger though, in a MOD.

my bad, thnx for the correction---my ass is so sore now :D

An educated guess would be that the maps will be about this size:

as small as it may look thats pretty big area to cover. cant wait......

maybe thats just a small corner of a map....its not cutting off the bottom---so its likely to extend further than the picture shows..

I never noticed, what part?

wow, that's very small

think'll it be much larger than that

Well map size is absolutely meaningless if it manages to load on the fly or something similar...

The problem with huge map sizes in these new super-cool looking game, is that they really can't type enough text, or put in enough stuff during loading times to keep you from dying of anticipation and boredom for 5 minutes. ;) :cheese:
