I'm in a boy scout troop. (gasp!) and A year ago, one of our leaders had made arrangements for us to go on this once in a lifetime opportunity to do this trek thing: we go to utah, hike 25 miles over 4 days, all the while living like mormon pioneers. The original cost would've been about 475 per person, but we had raised enough at a recent fundraiser to cut the price to 75 per boy. Aside from this, there was an initial 1000$ to the company, and 300$ to the bus company to get us from California to Utah.
Everything was going smoothly, and the trek was to set out on monday. Monday, as in, four days.
Then, I recieve new, that the guy incharge of settign all this up was looking up the prices for extra things, like flint/steel fire learning, that kind of stuff. All fo a sudden, the man who works there says, "Oh, by the way, our policies have changed. There is now a minimum requirement of 50 people to go on the trek."
Not too bad, right? Well, we have less than 30 people going.
The guy in charge put his foot down, argued, and the man said, "well, if you have less, you only have to pay for 40 people".
no. We're nto paying for people who aren't going. Besides, we had made our arrangements before they had changed their policies, so this is very unfair.
I mean... isn't it?

I'ma gonna have to wait until monday to find out If I ever do go on this trek :(
(oh, it's once in a lifetime because the group in charge of our big troop activities doesn't allow us to go out of state for another 10 years. By then, everyone in our troop will be out of scouts. pff.)

I dunno, but I went on a 14 people trek to Brazil, £3000. Anyway, once in a lifetime trip to get from California to Utah...BS mate. You could do it the year after if you wanted.

Tell him if you need to pay that much more you can't go, and persuade everyone else not to. If noone goes, they lose out on 30 x $1300. That'll probably make him get a bit nervous.

The people in charge of you boy scouts should know how to handle this situation though? Tell them you only have limited funds and they need to abide by the original price.

hmm...yeah that does sound unfair.
the one thing u or whoever in ur group can try is filing a complaint with the section of government in charge of travel/transportation services and such.
they must have some rules and regulations put in place so customers aren't taken advantage of... anyway good luck.

That would takes weeks. Just complain, or try and find out why they need you to pay for 40, and if it is just policy tell them that they will be missing out on all the people and money from your troop.

Wait.. What is an extra $25 dollars? I think its a huge deal that you don't have to pay $475 for the trip. Why not have everyone pitch in $25 extra dollars.. Yes it is unfair, but if it is that big of a deal, pay the extra money and go on the trip.

to kirovman: it's not the fact that te trip is CA to UT, but more the fact that the troop is only gonna have this chance in ten years, and by then everyone has probably left to do work, w/e. I believe I said that in the original post too, but meh :|

As for complaints, all the parents are callign and complaining, they ahd a meeting about it, I believe... anyway, more than what I've already said, I don't know. hopefully this'll get worked out.

I'd pay...if it's something important, and you are ALREADY paying less than what you original needed..it should still work out ok.

I see, well I wouldn't worry that much about it, just pay the extra if you really need to. Sure it would be nice to get it down to the original price by complaining.

Anyway good luck with it.

Dunno if anyone cares, but we (my troop) is indeed going on the trek tomorraw, and I believe that the adults didn't have to pay anything extra, so yay.

Interesting, I live in Utah and my scout group went to california, we just had a troop leader with a van and we drove.. 16 hours of fun driving.

Are you doing the handcart trek or just normal walking?
