My internet connection speed is supposedly 6500 kbps, yet all those bandwidth tests rate my connection at only 800-1000 kbps, is this normal? Also, I don't recall ever getting over 400kBps in a http/p2p download, which is around half of my theoretical download speed.

so what my line speed: 1533.8 Kbps 188 K bytes/sec. The reaon u may be getting slow speeds is u might have sum spyware, adware, malware or a virus on ur machine slowing u down? Do a scan, also ur ISP could be aving issues, u mite have high DB on ur line causing interferance, theres many reason why.

6500kbps is the theoretical value. The real value is much different. If your using cable and not DSL, Cable is like a LAN, the more people on the internet, the slower it is. DSL is faster but it limits you to a specific speed. And a P2P network is utter chaos. There is no set speed for that, but the speed will be well below your theoretical 6500kbps.

if your internet service is labelled as a "best effort" service, then what you get is what you get

Are you sure its not returning the results in Kb(its)/sec and not KB(ytes)/sec
That'd give you a big difference.

Also, try to free up your connection when you test it. Stop all your downloads and all those other internet programs.

The whole "if there's more people on cable, you'll get lesser speeds" is wrong. The biggest slowdown I've seen it about 200kbps. So be quiet.

Jelly, you will never get your "speed" while downloading. Rarely ever will you get more than a megabyte per second. It's because websites limit their bandwith; the maximum you can get is what they allow. I've downloaded from uncapped servers before and they're really great. Too bad they've been, like, 8MB videos. I was wondering why it only took a couple seconds. :p

Read the fine print from your ISP. Chances are it says "Speeds up to"

Your max download speed would be 812 KB, and since you'd never get near that, the results are probably correct.

hmm, interesting. I have 100mbps VDSL and my dl speed is 700kbps ~ 1mbps (+100/-100)

umm 100mbps is prob. your network speed not your bandwidth

having bandwith is great but sites and other people have upload restrictions as well which will cause u to not be able to use your full bandwith availible. i can get up to 500KB/sec (4megbit/sec) from my ISP. some websites give me that full speed for a download, some only give me 40KB/sec.
U.S. Speed test: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest
it has 6-7 test sites in the US to test from.
