I've been googling for a while now and can't find any sites that look legitimate enough for me to buy a barebone notebook from...besides, none of them have too many parts already in them. SHould I just stick to building a new PC or should I continue with my effort ?

long story short...does anyone know anywhere I can get a barebone notebook ?

you aren't going to find anything much cheaper than a dell...

From what I hear, building a laptop/notebook is very complicated. Stick with building a PC ... or buy a dell, they make nice gaming notebooks. Just bought one :p

Yeah, there isn't much choise out there with laptops yet, plus, the cooling is often heatpipes to "central" heatsinks, meaning that setting up more advanced cooling often isn't possible. The practical upshot of which means that there is usually little to no benefit to building your own over ready made. They usually cost as much or more to build as well.
