I am on wireless connection and whenever I go to the Server list in Steam, I get around 80. I have the same filter settings I used on my computer that is directly connected to the net. Now, I have no firewall on my downstairs computer nor for my router. I have one on the computer I am on now, but it is Zone Alarm and I already allowed Steam to access the net.

Please someone help me. As I am unable to view servers from other games I want to play. Thanks a lot guys.
 
Take a look for ports that may be HL2 specific. I can't remember if they have a totally new server (using different ports) as the HL master. Also notice that some of the servers use non-standard ports as well, there is a broad range.

Try turning off Zone Alarm completely, and see if it works. If it does, then turn it back on, try it again, and then see if there is a log that tells you what is trying to punch through.
 
Nothing happened when I turned Zone Alarm off. Can someone help me out with this? Should I post this in hardware? Is there anything else I should do?
 
So there is no actual hard firewall blocking you then... : / Sounds like a network card issue...
 
What is your network card... I would try re-installing/updating your network drivers...

What speed is your wireless card? I'm on wireless too, so I think I can also get some help from my System Admin... He knows a little more than I do. For now, just get those new drivers.
 
Its a NETGEAR 54 Mb WG311v2.

It runs at 11 only because my router limits it.


Have the latest drivers. Just recently bought it and downloaded straight from their webpage.
 
I'm assumuming your using an Access point in your home... I'm also assuming that encryption if it has been turned on is correctly done... Router!

You have a router! That's a form of a hardware firewall dude.
 
So what do I have to do? Is the router causing me to not recieve many servers?
 
Possible... what kind of router is it...? Routers are effectively firewalls in my experience... I'm forewarding this thread to my SA... to see if he can help.
 
You're just pinging lower on wireless, and therefore your ping filter cuts out more servers
 
I am assuming that his filters had every server that he could detect with the specific module he wanted to play. Not map-filter or ping-filter.
 
I actually just let it search through all of the games and my ping filter was set to 200. Only ~80 servers under a 200 ping barrier for my connection? That should not happen.


My router is a Netgear MR814v2. Its about a year old, but it still gives me a great connection so there is really no need on upgrading just yet.

dont overestimate the power of wireless networking... take off the ping filter on both and compare the results then
 
Aye, Pings may be a lot higher with wireless... Though I can get enough 50ms servers to keep me happy.

At 11mb/s it'll take a small hit I think, especially if you are sharing it...
 
All right I took it off, and I have noticed I recieved 1000 servers, but the thing is I see all the servers with a latency of 1700, 1500, etc. But when I refresh the server it drops to ~100 sometimes less to 50 even more to about 150. Why is it doing this? Is there a way I can just get the servers to show up as their true latency?
 
latency fluctuates greatly with steam connected readings, it is the true latency, the browser just doesnt average it all out.
 
Yes it is, but I do not want to find a server, right click it, and then refresh it to see what the actual ping is. Like I said in my previous post, they show up as 1700 then they drop to mildly around 70. Is there a way that they will show up at the normal ping?
 
no, thats the way steam functions.
I'm not sure of the inner workings, maybe you should email valve?
check out their site for the steam guy if you really want to know how it functions. (dont expect tech help though)

It could end up changing the latency because you are trying to ping all the servers in turn... Thus plugging up the connection... (At least.. it made sense to me...)

if that occurs, its only at his end, not the servers.. but its possible, actually, its likely.
 
Its not really a bug.
Maybe get a faster internet connection?
 
By faster internet connection, do you mean buy a faster router so I get a faster connection? Or actually call up the ISP and have them upgrade me?
 
Well... assuming you aren't on a 56k, the remedy that would ease it would be to get a better router, one that would allow you to use all of your wireless card's transmission rate.
 
Yeah, if you got a wireless G router, it would help a little
 
That is the type of card I have. It either runs 11 mbps on B or 54 mbps on G.

You recommend me to purchase a 54 mbps Wireless-G router?
 
Wait, which runs at 54? the router or the NIC? which ever one only goes to 11 could be upgraded

Go with the 108, then upgrade the card itself... But make sure you turn on encryption as well.
 
go as fast as you can reasonably afford, but unless you're worried about hacking, leave off the encryption too as that will slow it down. (Just disable SSID broadcast and that will prevent kiddies getting in instantly)
 
Mac lock it? I do not know how to do that. Throught my routers settings in 192.186.0.0?

I will see if I can buy a new router soon. Thanks guys.
