Did anybody else notice that Barney seems to be a conspiracy theorist, or is at least "into the scene"?

In Blue Shift, as Barney collects his uniform from his locker, two books are clearly visible on a shelf inside. One seems to be a basic government conspiracy pulp, the other is on something about aliens.

Does anybody think that this is going to be developed further in HL2?

Let the speculation begin...

ABSOLUTELY *NO* SPOILERS FROM BETA-HEADS, PLEASE!

I MEAN IT! Some of us are quite happy to WAIT until HL2 is RELEASED to find out the plot!

In the industry they tend to call it a "joke".

Of course it's a joke, but it's also ironic, considering the story, and an indication of Barney's character development.:)

It's almost like they thought about that and incorporated that into the joke.

I wouldn't say a joke book in a locker is going to be the starting point of a beautifully explored plot development in Half-Life 2 any more than the mop you see in Office #53 is going to be a key point in the resistance against the Combine.

I was just saying it's an indication of Barney's character.

And about that mop: this is BMRF, so how do you know that that's a mop? The gauss gun looks like some kind of futuristic blender:cheese:. Seriously though, there are hints on the plot all over HL that are apparently being extended in HL2.

"Ruuunn, fellow Combine! Gordon Freeman has found the almighty Death Mop!"

Pardon the state of my mind, I got only 5 hours sleep last night.

Seeya.

I have to agree with it being only a joke, but you have to remember something. The thing with HL1 was that the character "Barney" wasn't just a single guy... All the security guards in the game were "Barney." Therefore, to say that "Barney is a (something)," wouldn't make sense. As for character development, in HL1, there was no character development, since "Barney" was simply the general name of all the security guards who constantly get killed yet are always found later in the game.

Err...the guy was talking about the Barney from Blue Shift, Barney Calhoun, who is now the only Barney in HL2.

In the third expansion, Blue Shift, Barney Calhoun was an actual character. He's the same one that will accompany you in HL2. "Barney" was originally just the model name for the security guard model. I think.

Seeya.

EDIT: Thank you, BritSavant. Beat me to it.

Yeah, they are, although the fluid dynamics and particle modelling when you get the mop-head wet leave something to be desired.:E

EDIT: Okay, gotta leave now. Seeya's later. It is this thread's destiny to expand!!!:E

There are some plot elements involving Barney in the beta, but since no spoilers are allowed I will reiterate what has already been said a dozen times already: Barney is in fact wearing a combine suit in that Barricade video.

yeah and i will tell you why barney got a combine suit!
it's because.. *get shot in the head*

EVIL (with a sniper rifle): wow he almost told them that barney go to... *get shot in the head*

D33 (with a sniper rifle): sorry pal but you can't tell everyone that barn... *receive a missile and explode*

rec (with a RPG): damn.. it's a high price to keep the secret that involve barney and.. *suddenly explode*

gabe (with a gluon gun): sorry! ^^

it could be...but its far fetched, i dont think the story was finished yet when Blue Shift came out.

A pekingese dog, tied to the end of a long wooden/plastic pole. It is dunked in soapy water and then used for cleaning floors.

absolutely amazing definition of a mop,
I was gonna say a pole with some tatered rags on the end used for cleaning hard floors (generally not used on carpet... generally)

but you sir, make me look like a fool

Seriously though, a mop is a cleaning utensil. "For when a broom is not enough". Looks a bit like a very skinny 80's rocker/rastafarian.

once again your description it's perfect...

i can imagine cleaning with an upside down jamaican.

edit: typo

Anyone ever played Space Quest? One of Sierra's pre-3D gems. The hero was a mop wielding janitor named Roger Wilco. So using a mop as a weapon isn't unheard of.

Is this thread off-topic, or what?

Urm... after all the mop-related HL2 plot lines that were revealed in the E3 videos, how the hell could this be considered off topic?

it's still on topic, we are talking about a mop conspiracy in a conspiracy thread.

in other news i just hooked up my 9800 pro :-D i almost beat up the fedex lady to get it.

i think barney is really a gargant in disguise, thats why he is seen shooting weapons in the e3 video. only a gargant would shoot guns when disguised as a barney

so you're saying the real barney is incapable of shooting weapons?

i just hooked up my 9800 pro :-D i almost beat up the fedex lady to get it.

They are terribly sexy aren't they. The cards I mean.

PS: Now we're OT. ;)

well, the fedex lady was sexy, only because she brought my card though.

i opened it immediately, and if i was to find pieces, the fedex lady would have still been sexy in all those little bags.

how the hell do you not know what a mop is?

Continuing the mop for a weapon rant...ever see UHF? An oldie but goodie from the twisted mind of Weird Al Yankovic. The actor who is/was Kramer from Seinfeld, plays a janitor who at one point, breaks free from being tied down, grabs his trusty mop, and commences beating the $hit outta the baddies....great scene.

Ok, move along people, nothing to see here. Continue with original thread topic...

ppl who dont speak english tend to not know that

i dont even speak english very well, and it's my first (only) language.... that's right.. im american.

anyways, back to the topic at hand, are there any other conspiracy theorys going around, i say that barney and the gman are both one and the same.

M.O.P. is a terrible rap group from Brooklyn who owe their fame to DJ Permier of Gangstarr.

What about Gordons son/daughter? Do you think that will be in the game? In Hl1 gordon had a picture of a baby in his locker (unless im horribly, horibbly mistaken) and its not likley hed have a friends/relatives baby in his locker, a picture of it i mean..
