Subject: Little Question

Hi Gabe

Is it possible to create with your new engine a game like Battlefield
(where you can use all vehicles and so on).
Does it work ? The size of Battlefield Maps are very big, but the engine
sucks a lot ;-)
All my hope is your new engine..

If you understand what LOD (level of detail is) you can think this would work better than Battlefeild and have better graphics even. LOD is a model system where you make several instances of the same model, say a car with 4000 polies. Up clse like 20 meters, the car is in its full 4000. 50 meters away and the second instance of the model now 2500 polies is used. 100+ meters away and the third instance is used with only 500 polies because you can't see the detailf rom so far away.

Supposedly HL2 will have very flexible LOD system along with very nicely coded network support with server side and client side factors to determine performance which Valve stated somewhere should be twice as effective as HL1 or improved by 50%.

It has also been said that HL2 was created with design in mind more than technicality therfore, there really is no limit to quality and performance. The limits are only set by a persons computer and if you had a supercomputer that costs $5000 you could make character models like 15,000 polies and still get good performance because the HL2 engine is flexible. Ofcourse many people don't own such a computer but the point is, that there really is no limit. \

Ok I am rambling and tis really doesn't have much to do with this thread:dork:

Battlefield .. is that 64 players maximum ? :p don't think source can handle this so it'll never be better I think. And I don't think it's a great thing to do since there is battlefield already :) So unless you have an original idea for a battlefield 1942 lookalike your mod would be unneeded :s

The devs noted they wanted (they didnt actually said they had, they never confirm MP issues) it to be on a mod to mod basis... Meaning, HL2 could very well support for example as many players as an integer, but you'd only have 32 max in a normal game. But if a mod wanted to have 2000 players, it would be possible... In theory at least, not in practice :)
I think they can easily make it 128 people. Maybe not playable with HL2 mp and a majority of mods, but lowpoly simple system mods could handle it. 64 people should be very possible in normal HL2 just with the enhanced netcode. Just speculations though :)

how many severs on BattleField actully have 64 players? I think 32 is great, 64 is very ****in rare.

depends on the servers, and how they handle all the traffic. unfortunatly, on 64 Player servers, 90% of them either tks, planecamps, snipers, or doesn't know what to do.

Battlefield does have LOD. Have you played it? Look at anything as you get closer to it (like rocks), and you'll see them change shape with dynamic LOD.

As stated previously on these boards, making a BF mod for HL2 would be pretty straightforward as long as you were comfortable with flying a plane around in an area less than a half mile in any dimension. You'd be in a constant dogfight with every other plane in the sky, and would have to keep worrying about crashing into the edges of the map. You might be able to scale things down but that's a lot more difficult than it sounds, there are numerous problems that go along with changing the scale.

That doesn't bother me too much, most of the BF maps are too friking big anyway. With any less than 30 people playing you end up running around by yourself half the time. I don't know about you guys, but for me the frequency of BF servers with over 30 people and under 100 ping is pretty low
