Because no one else is gonna make Sonic threads on this board

if i had a wii i would try this game.

but i sold mine due to the fact that Nintendo doesn't believe in publishing good games for Wii anymore.

oh well.

but this thread does illustrate why i love this board.

you guys some how manage to get angry with eachother and disagree and argue and still manage to keep it a reasonable conversation rather than a flamewar. . .

well. usually. . . .

sometimes. . . .

You ****.

I hope Sega has some freakin ace up its sleeves for the future of this series.

Darkside is my ****ing favorite poster on these forums.

But Ristar is a seperate franchise. Why not make a new Ristar game rather than crowbaring his gameplay mechanics into a Sonic game?
It works really well. It works even if you've never played Ristar. I just like drawing the comparison because it's a nod to an old game that a lot of people, even those who had Megadrives, might not remember. And it plays exactly the same, 'cept in 3D. So, being that Ristar was a fun game, taking its mechanics and putting it into the game translates into fun.

It didn't control as well, the whole thing felt jittery and messy ... it just lacked a sense of responsiveness and didn't feel worth playing through at all.
The thing is, it's actually the opposite: the controls are SUPER responsive. The slightest flick of the analog stick will set Sonic moving. Now, if you slow down, if you barely tilt the analog stick, you walk slowly and have a good degree of control. It's the same with almost every 3D platformer since Mario 64--just a tilt gets you moving, and fully pressing the analog stick forward gets you running.

Except you're controlling a character that BREAKS THE SOUND BARRIER WITH HIS SPEED. It feels unresponsive to you because you might be expecting a tight turn or a slight shift of your body to line up with something (say, rings or a medal) and you're not moving to that direction immediately, or too slowly. That's because your forward momentum is so great that you can't just adjust your speed. This is why the game has the left and right shift buttons, and the drift command. Both of these functions can be used to give yourself a greater degree of control in your movements; you can drift around corners quickly (you can even drift water if you're fast enough), and the shift will allow you to sidestep quickly.

So the problem is that people just aren't used to playing as a character this fast. No other Sonic game even comes close to mimicking his speed in this game, and he's not on rails for most of the time, so you really are CONTROLLING him. If you only spend a little bit of time with the game I can see why you might think "the controls are jittery and unresponsive." Trust me, even I was jittering at first. EVERYBODY jitters at first. But by the first Mazuri daytime stage I was flying.

And I hear the werehog levels are a poor (very poor) mans God of War, so ... **** it.
And I hear
You haven't played them and are passing judgement on them. They're not poor. They're not even that much like God of War outside of "press this button sequence for more damage!"

But people seem to forget: SEGA INVENTED THE QUICK TIME EVENT. Sega invented that shit back in Dynamite Deka, also known as Die Hard Arcade. And then they perfected it in Shenmue. So by saying, "Oh, it's a game that has you press a series of buttons to trigger a specific event against an enemy," if you say Sonic copied GoW than I can just as easily say GoW copied Shenmue. See where that leads us?

You can say it's LIKE God of War, because that's an accurate comparison and most people haven't played Die Hard Arcade or Shenmue, or any of the other Sega games that use QTE. So it'd be an accurate comparison. But it isn't a "poor man's" God of War. It just happens to use quick time events like older Sega games.

And really, if you LIKED God of War, why wouldn't you find that fun again?

Plus GoW didn't have all the cool platforming segments like this has.

Me too. I can't really type such long posts about defending the things that I love, but Darkside is... unexplainable.

I wish I still had my Dreamcast. I almost got to play Sonic Adventure. ALMOST. I should have bought the game that day at gamestop. *sigh*

Is the PS2 version a faithful recreation? I was thinking of getting that version. It got loads of shoddy reviews though, saying it's nothing like the Dreamcast version. (I think it's called Sonic Heroes on PS2)

Also, I only was interested in the Sonic Adventure games because they were most like the original games, only 3D. The new stuff where the devs try to create a "platformer" Sonic with guns and swords just isn't Sonic tbh.

I don't think the SA games are like the classics that much. But they're are the cream of the 3d crop. Sonic Heroes isn't a SA game, and there were only 2 SA games named "Sonic Adventure" and "Sonic Adventure 2" and only came out on the dreamcast (and later "Sonic Adventure 2: Battle" on the gamecube)

You know what? This thread makes me want to play some classic Sonic now.

If you'll excuse me. :)

/me pops in Sonic Collection for PS2.

Did I not just mention I played a marathon of Sonic games with people who still remember where every giant ring is located in every single level of the original Sonic games?
Eh, that isn't that impressive. The Big Rings are only hidden in S3 / S&K. And if you genuinely know where they ALL are, that just means that you suck at the special stages :p

And almost back on topic: I've only just played Mario 64 (though the DS version). Don't expect me up to speed on Sonic in 3D anytime this century. I had a couple of run-throughs of the Unleashed demo on my friend's PS3. All 4 of us did. Hard to credibly criticise any game based upon its demo at the best of times, but when the demo consists of on rails (err... literally) running and the only control is the 'do something' button, it's even harder :p

I haven't even tried the demo. Sounds...like it might be more detrimental to the game than helping it.

And me personally, I found it pretty impressive, the giant rings thing. Especially considering it was a friend who I didn't even know LIKED Sonic games, let alone remembered the secrets. That's just situational to me though. When I saw it I was like, "What the shit? How do you even remember that?" So I personally was impressed, and was just throwing that out there to say, "I played this game with people who really know their Sonic games, and if they like it that's saying something."

sonic team need to make chu chu rocket 2 or otherwise stop making games

eithers good.

Dont for get Sonic Adventure DX which is the GC remake of SA1

The sword mechanics look a little cumbersome.

Also, everyone has an opinion about something. Almost everyone seems to have the same opinion about Unleashed, and this Sonic-with-Sword game.

It's no use arguing, Darkside's opinion will stay his opinion.
