So, Half-Life 2 quit on you, eh?

And, of course, you need some help because you (probably) aren't a C++ expert that can decompile HL2 and fix the problem himself and you're looking for it in here.

That's fine, but if you post around screaming 'OH MY GOD IT WON'T WORKKKKK!!!!!111', no one will pay attention to you and will probably try to get you banned for spamming.

Looking at the large amount of Driver and DirectX problems recently, I thought I would make one post that will handle with those problems in an organized manner.

First, we'll need to format the reply you will be making :

-------> START OF REPLY <-------
PROBLEM : (Please state your problem here)

SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS
(The specifications of your computer system, the stuff in your PC. You can find information about your computer by going to the Start button and selecting 'Execute'. Now type 'dxdiag' (without the quotes) into the window that has just appeared.

After a while a window will pop up. If it doesn't, fire up Google and look for 'DirectX 9.0c Download'.)

OPERATING SYSTEM : (Can be found under the 'System Tab')
PROCESSOR : (Can be found under the 'System Tab')
MEMORY : (Can be found under the 'System Tab')
VIRTUAL MEMORY: (Can be found under the 'System Tab', below Memory)
DIRECTX VERSION : (Can be found under the 'System Tab')
GRAPHIC CARD : (Can be found under the 'Graphic' or 'Monitor' tab, I'm not sure of the name. The stuff next to 'Name' is what you should put here.)
GRAPHIC CARD MEMORY : (Can be found under the 'Graphic' or 'Monitor' tab. It's below 'DAC Type'.)
RESOLUTION : (Can be found under the 'Graphic' or 'Monitor' tab. Look for something like 640X480, 800X600, 1024X764 or higher.)
DRIVERS : (Can be found under the 'Graphic' or 'Monitor' tab. Look in the right upper corner for 'Version'. The text next to it is what you need.)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :
(Any other information that might be of interest, such as the fact that your computer might have been restarting in the middle of a game or during work. Or that you just bought the computer or that you just installed a new processor. That kind of stuff.)
-------> END OF REPLY <-------

Now that that's done, we just have to wait until someone will come around and help you with the problem.

You can copy this sheet to paste it in your reply and fill it in.

Now, let's say I have a solution for a problem that someone has. I will of course reply to this thread, but if the thread will be cut in more pages, things could get quite hectic. So, we will also need to format answers. Let's do it like this :

-------> START OF ANSWER <-------
ANSWER TO (Insert the name of the person that is having the problem) :

LINK TO ORIGINAL QUESTION : (Now this is a bit tricky. Every post and reply on this forum has its own number. For instance, this thread has number 1528301. If we add &postcount=1 to this, we will end up with the first reply this thread has.

But luckily, there is an easier way to isolate a single reply. In the upper right corner of each reply is a number.

Click on the number and a new window will open with only the reply in it. Copy the link and paste it here.)

Now everything is highly organized and can easily be found back.

You can copy this sheet to paste it in your reply and fill it in.

I'll try to use this format if I have a problem with Half-Life 2. :)

PROBLEM : The game restarts my computer when the main menu loads.

SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS

OPERATING SYSTEM :Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
PROCESSOR :AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.0GHz

DRIVERS : nv4_disp.dll, 6.14.0010.7772 (English)
RESOLUTION :1152 x 864 (32 bit) (60Hz)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :
the game loaded only once with out bugging out, i tryed to change the graph settings a bit, hit apply and the computer crashed. Retryed and the menu loads and then the computer restarts. After two reinstalls, and many error checks, defrags, spyware sweeps, and driver up checks, it still happens

-I have not been able to play this game since i've upgraded my cpu from a amd 2000+
-My graphics card is overclocked just a little bit from factory. 275 instead of 250 i think. i've never had a problem with any other game before
-when i see the blurry pic of city 17 i can see and move my mouse on the screen, idk if this happened when i was able to play. also once the menu is done loading the little bubble in the lower right corner still says loading and then it cuts out.

hope this helps.

ANSWER : HL2 sometimes has problems with overclocked video cards. Your system specifications are way above the minimum requirements for HL2, so that shouldn't be a problem. Also, try validating your files.Here are some general troubleshooting tips. You've done most of them, but a few, I presume, are new to you. These other tips might be useful to you too. Hope that helped a bit.

This is a truely great idea. Well done Beerdude :cheers:

Have a beer... :hmph:

Thanks i found my answer in one of the links you gave. I had to have steam force the video options back when booting. Thanks a mill, i serched there site for a while but never found that.

PROBLEM: Game runs incredibly slow at some points, and at Garry's Mod, Counter Strike maps run so slow, it takes about 4 minutes to get your guy across the map. Also, when playing, people on TV's or screens are unaudible.

ANSWER TO : Samk05

LINK TO ORIGINAL QUESTION : http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1790746&postcount=7

ANSWER : Hi, Sam. Your games are running so slow because of your graphics card. Or to be more precise, you don't have one. The Intel 82865G Graphics Controller is a very weak 3D graphics accelerator, and it takes it Graphic Card Memory (96 MB) from the main Memory (510 MB). This leaves little memory for your computer to use when playing the game. When you combine that information with your weak graphics accelerator, you will indeed notice that many games will run very, very slow. What you are having is FPS lag. Frames Per Second lag is caused by insufficient hardware. In your case, the memory and the graphics accelerator is insufficient.

What you should do is the following:

Ask someone that you know that is very knowledgeable about the inside about computers if your computer can be updated. Try not to go to a computer store, as they sometimes try to rip you off, charging you money for absolutely nothing. Try to get a friend to help you or something. (BTW, always turn off the computer when opening it from the side, pull out the plug too.) If he says that it's updateable, post back here.
