Hi all! And welcome to
Beerdude26's
Big Rock Werchter Thread

First off, let me explain to you what Rock Werchter is: A festival.
It was recently chosen as "The Best Festival In The World" by the International Live Music Conference.
It takes place on the 29th June till the 2nd July. Four days of awesome music! \0/

It's located in Werchter, a really tiny village with large areas of meadows around them. Here's the festival website : www.rockwerchter.be

Anyways, I'm going to write some kind of journal about the past four days. You will hear extremely weird and/or screwed-up things that are often just completely strange. Most of this will be accompanied by (crappy quality) pictures taken by my phone. Oh, and I didn't take any pictures on the first day, forgot D:

Let's start:

So, I'm off to Rock Werchter. It's only 15 km from my home, so it won't take too long to get there. WRONG. I spent 3 bloody hours in traffic jams, sweating the hell out of myself (together with my girlfriend :p). The tents have already been set up by some friends who went there in the morning at 7AM.

When I finally arrive, I get to hear that I still have to walk a mile on foot with all my luggage. So I walk (more like crawl) towards the campsite with 15kg on my back and pulling another 12kg (or so).

When I finally arrive at the campsite, I am told that I still have to walk another kilometre, because our tents are all the way at the back. :|

The campsite itself is actually pretty gigantic:

There were like 6 campsites like these. In the first picture you can see woods. They separate the campsite and the festival grounds. So when I went to bed early I still had to try and sleep with extremely loud music in the background.

Okay, everything's installed and after some hawt sechs with the girlfriend (ok, not really.) I go to the festival. I notice that you absolutely can't go through the woods to the festival (which is like, 200 metres away), but you have to use the road. Mind you, an asphalt road in the middle of the day is as hot as J-Lo's ass in a melting furnace. Try walking another kilometre in that heat (It was 28°-31° C, or 82°-89.5° F). Here are pictures of the road, which was riddled with booths at the sides:

I had to walk the entire road in the first picture to get to the festival. Ghey.

Day 1

Right. I'm at the entrance of Rock Werchter. I forgot to take a picture of it, but it's about 12 metres high and 20 metres long. You have to pass through two checkpoints each; one checkpoint will check your bags for goods that are not allowed on the festival grounds, the other will check if your entry ticket is valid. You give your ticket and get a bracelet in return. I had a combi-ticket, which gives me access to the grounds for four full days, but you can buy a one-day-ticket for one specific day, too. The bracelet then becomes your ticket. They sometimes switch the checkpoints, because some people try to run through the checkpoints with their illegal goods or try to run through without a ticket or bracelet.

My four-day bracelet:

=

The colour is different each year, so you can't just keep it on for a whole year :p

Right, I'm on the festival grounds. Time to take a look at the programme:

You probably can barely read it, so here it is again. The bands in bold are the ones that I have heard (but not necessarily have seen):

Seeing as I only arrived around 8PM, I was only just in time to hear Manu Chao. His songs are okay, but he was a bit disappointing live. I expected to see a bit more liveliness.

Next up: The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
HOLY DAMN SHENS. I expected something good, but this was just fantastic. Many people said they saw better concerts of The Peppers, but for a first time, I thought they were pretty mindblowing. They played a lot of originals, but also some from their latest album (Stadium Arcadium). My brothers used to listen to them when they were my age, so I was able to sing along with a lot of the songs. It's a great sight to see 30,000 people sing along with Kiedis. They didn't make a gigantic show out of it like, for example, Rammstein, though.

Okay, time to grab something to eat, go to the loo, and get ready for The Blacked Eyed Peas.
The rumours were true: Their songs aren't so good at all when sung live. Especially Fergie's voice was horrible. Well, if she sang horrible, it was really horrible. But if she hit everything right, she was incredible. The rest of the band was great, especially William. The show started with a nice intro where every band member did a personal thing. William rapped, Fergie sang, and Allen and Jaime did some slick breakdancing. They sang a few songs from their first album, but the majority of their set were from the two latest albums, Elephunk and Monkey Business. They practically re-enacted their music videos, which was absolutely brilliant. In "Shut Up", Fergie sang incredibly long during the "Whoaaaa" part of the song:

Same ass excuses
Boy you're useless
Whhoooaaaa

Like 10 seconds long :p Everyone started cheering and clapping and it took like 2 minutes for the song to continue. They also did "Where Is The Love". They then took a break and the Kaizers Orchestra did a cool intermezzo. My girlfriend then wanted to go back to the tent, so I had to miss out on "Don't Phunk With My Heart".

Day 2

I wake up at 8 AM, the tent is baking. My girlfriend is already outside trying to cool off. Time to crawl out of this oven and get some fresh air :O
I eat a bit, go to the toilets (which are at the front of the campsite, so I have to walk about one kilometre just to take a crap or wash my hands :|)
Then I go to the festival grounds again. In the meanwhile I buy a big-ass sandwich for 4€.
Having arrived on the festival grounds, my girlfriend has an incredible headache, so we head for the EHBO spot. She gets a painkiller there and some advice. We look up a spot with shadow and sit there while listening to the music. I often fall asleep :p I hardly hear anything of The Editors and Kanye West. The Editors were okay, Kanye West not so. I liked Sean Paul's music, although his voice sounds a bit flatter live.

I completely missed Live because I fell asleep. After Live me and my girlfriend got something to eat and drink and moved up to the Main Stage. it's now 7.30PM, so the heat has subsided for the most part. Anouk is about to play.

Anouk is a Dutch (The Netherlands) singer, and is pretty known internationally. She's got some great songs and her voice sounded exactly the same live, which was absolutely great. A lot of people sang along with her, which made it a very fun concert.

Here are some small pictures from the concert (most of them are pictures of the screen feeds). If you look closely, you can see "ANOUK" in the background of the stage. The ones with black framework are larger ones:

After Anouk, I went and got a cool hat from the Randstad (=Interim bureau) booth. You had to get in line and wait until it was your turn to wash your hands. Yes, all you had to do was wash your hands. But they had an almost evilly ingenious system to keep you there as long as possible: They didn't give you soap, they gave you soap pads. Which were essentially blue paper sheets dipped in soap. So when you tried to wash your hands with it, it all sticked onto your hands, forcing you to scratch off the horrible gooeyness, all while your hands were being doused in icy cold water. Anyways, after a new hat and my newly received hypothermia, I took a few pictures.

One of my friends told me I looked emo wearing the hat (lol), so I challenged him that under five attempts, I could make the most emo picture of myself EVAR.

I won.

Now it's time for Muse. I heard of them, I heard a few songs of them. They were okay.
But I'm telling you, live they're the bestest, hawtest and right about every other positive superlative in existance. Matthew Bellamy (Voice/Guitar) is so damn good in creating a unique mysterious feeling around his music, and together with his great musical skills, Muse surely was one of the best bands there was on Rock Werchter.

My friends then wanted to go see Tiga, a DJ, in the Pyramid Marquee. Keep in mind that the Pyramid Marquee is like kilometre long walk, and in the evening there are about 80,000-90,000 people on the festival grounds. Long story short, we lost the main group, and we went back to the Main Stage to see The Who. I went to the toilets to take a crap and suddenly I heard the main theme of CSI  Quite a surrealistic moment. So The Who was responsible for this aweshens music? They also played the main theme of CSI: Miami. I was convinced that their music rawked. Didn't manage to get pictures of them, though ;(

Oh, and did I tell you that the toilets only have ONE air hole? I practically sufficated in there.

I went back to the campsite while listening to the awesome music of The Who, encountered some policewomen on horses while listening to the awesome music of The Who, and I fell asleep while listening to the awesome music of The Who.

Day 2 was good.

Day 3

Same thing as yesterday, baking like hell and incredibly tired I make my way out of the tent. I instantly fall asleep in the shade just after taking this picture:

On the festival grounds, I slept some more, occassionally being woken by the Stella Artois Pub that suddenly fires up. The Stella Artois Pub makes sure there's music inbetween the concerts. Various DJ's mix popular music together, which often results in some great remixes.

I listened to the Kaiser Chiefs, because I liked their music from the beginning, and knew that they were going to hit it big later on. As always, their music was great and didn't lose any hawtness being performed live. They made quite a show out of it too, with a few acrobatic moves.

I got some food and drinks for me and my girlfriend. When going back, I noticed these three guys. It was simply hilarious how they were lying there, smack in the middle of hundreds of people:

The Raconteurs and Franz Ferdinand were good, too. But they aren't my type of music. Well, Franz Ferdinand isn't.

A few pictures of Franz Ferdinand:

Now it was time for Placebo. I liked their music, although it sounded a bit similar sometimes. Brian Molko's voice is still very clear live, though. There wasn't much show to it. In the middle of the concert, Brian fell on the ground exhausted after singing an incredibly long song.

dEUS was up next, but my girlfriend practically fell asleep where she stood, so I was forced to miss this Belgian band. No matter, I'll probably see them in later versions of Rock Werchter.

As you can see, dEUS attracted a lot of people.

While on the way to the campsite, I encountered a few policewomen on horses. While they were patrolling, they got loads of whistles from drunk festivalgoers. You had to see their faces, they were blushing like mad :D

Day 4

My girlfriend had to start working at 7AM tomorrow, so she went home early at 11.30 AM. I was going to stay for Hooverphonic and Depeche Mode. I escorted her to the car (while carrying her luggage :p). After some short goodbye kisses, I went back to the campsite. I was going to pack everything, stash it in a friend's car and go to the festival grounds.

But man, if you have to clear out a tent in 32°C (89.5°F) smack in the middle of noon, you're sweating harder than Boss Hog.

An older friend of mine (Mark) was going home just after Depeche Mode ended, so it couldn't get any perfect than that. He had been drunk for 2 full days in a row. And I mean that; he woke up drunk, he partied drunk and he went to sleep, drunk. What some people will do to keep away that impending headache, eh :p

His friend (Levi, yes like the jeans), shared some Chimay with him, a very sturdy Abbey beer. When he opened it, the lid popped in the air because of the incredible pressure created by the weather and smacked him on the head, leaving a bloody scar :O

But he was already pretty drunk, so he probably barely felt it :p

Anyway, once they were all set, we headed for the parking lot, which was very big:

But we weren't parked there. We were parked in Werchter, near the home of some old lady. In return of being allowed to park their car there, they bought the old lady some flowers and arranged them next to her door :p

We had to go via a dirt road and through a gate. But lo and behold, suddenly the top of the gate was surrounded by barbed wire! We had to go through the side, where some of the barbed wire was strung together.

When we put our luggage in the car, we returned to the main road through the car park. I looked at the car plates and noticed:

A german:

And someone from Estonia! lol:

But hey, one girl came all the way from California to see Placebo (she was holding a banner and the cameras filmed her), so I guess Estonia's not very far. I also heard a lot of Americans on the festival grounds.

While going to the festival grounds, I noticed a hilarious booth wall:

Pacman ftw.

I had some fries and listened to Starsailor. They sounded okay, but, once again, weren't really my style.

The other bands were so unknown, I wondered why they were on the Main Stage. I have never, ever heard of Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation, a bit more of Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals. Well, only of Ben Harper. Just after Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation, I was ruthlessly attacked. I was put on a cap filled with WHIPPED CREAM. Yuckyness ensued. I immediately washed my hair (I lost the picture that shows me just after the attack):

Everything I write after this must be imagined with the incredibly putrid smell of whipped cream slowly becoming sour. I probably annoyed people with it :p

After Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, I ate some pancakes and moved up to the main stage. Right about everyone left, and I was able to get a spot only 30-40 metres away from the stage. Hooverphonic was going to play next.

Hooverphonic is another Belgian band that sings English songs. They used some pretty hawt video editing to create really cool images. (You will notice these in the photos) Too bad it lagged a bit, and caused the videos to be about a second (and a half) slower than the actual footage.

They released some balloons, which were happily thrown around. (Fourth picture)

Next up: Depeche Mode. I powered down my phone, because my battery was almost empty.

A few really cool "pod-like" synthesizers were put on stage, and they had loads of lights on them. I wanted to take a photo and then, just then, my phone powered down.
GOD FUCKING DAMMIT! D:

After having overcome my disappointment, I got ready to enjoy the show. And man, it was quite a show. The lighting was used perfectly, the video feeds were used perfectly (three different video feeds on three different screens, often a variation in colour of another video feed, or simply another image.). While playing "Personal Jesus", an image of a dangling cross on a car was used, which was displayed right behind David Gahan, which gave an incredible "circling" effect. And each time "Reach Out And Touch Faith" was sang, the entire audience sang with him (including me :p), and all the lights on the stage lit up, giving it quite a godlike feeling. They played a lot of songs, both from their older albums and their more recent ones. Depeche Mode surely was the best band on Rock Werchter, and a more than worthy end of the 2006 version.

I then proceeded to spurt towards the carpark, hoping I wasn't too late. I was about to go to the gate when suddenly a guy appears from the bushes and yells "HEY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!". I tell him my car is just around the corner and that I was taking a shortcut. He shows me with his flashlight that everything has been electrified. He explains to me that drunk people have been destroying the property around here, etc etc etc. I ask for a short way around. He tells me there's a road some 20 metres further just from where I came from. I run back and get to the car. Well, the non-existant car. Crap. Luckily someone else I know drove by and I was able to get a lift.

Having arrived at home, I took a bath. But before I did that, I took some pictures of my face. Horrible what four days of not washing, partying and hawt sechs can do to you!

I went to bed.

...Well, this was my journal for Rock Werchter 2006. Hope you liked it!

It wasn't death threats I was worried about, it was the potential influx of HL2 technical help requests. D:

Anyhoo, glad you enjoyed it fella, would have loved to see the Kooks. :)

Wow Beerend, looks like a great Festival. Wasn't it called Torhout/Werchter before? Reminds me of my trips to Pinkpop a loooong time ago, a Dutch festival that has gone downhill unfortunately. *sigh* Pearl Jam playing Neil Young's Rockin' in the free world before a sea of simultaneoulsy clapping hands, the singer crowdsurfing;(

ROFL at the 3 guys sleeping amongst each other. I can just imagine all the people stepping around/over them.

Oh man, that is awesome. Who knows- maybe I'll go see it someday!*

HAH

Many people thought the line-up this year was appalling. Normally there are like 3 times more popular (well, in mainstream) bands.

Yeah, because they used to do the festival twice, once in Werchter, then in Torhout. But less and less people came to Torhout, so now it's only held once in Werchter. I heard about Pinkpop, heard it was practically the same line-up and all and same scale, but still everyone comes to Werchter :p

My gf didn't want pics of her on the interweb.

That sounds awesome.

I am going to Reading festival end of August which should be equally awesome. XD

You should of watched Mogwai and Sigur Ros. They are amazing live. As are Tool, also.

Looked like a pretty good festival, some damn fine names on its line-up. Muse, The Who, Deftones, Wolfmother. Plus the others ^ I said.

At last, I'm not alone! I've also been to Rock Werchter, but only at Saturday.

Too bad you didn't say you were going, then we could have at least had a nice meeting at the Humo stand to play a game of the Rockchinese, and search for combines!

Are you going to Pukkelpop this year? It has a damn good program.

I'll add some comments to your post :) I'll post the pictures of my Samsung D500 Monday, because I don't have the cable at the moment.

Ah well, it took me only an hour to get there with a combination of bus and train, and I live in Limburg (world citizen!).

My Saturday-day bracelet is blue, and I personally find it the best of all four colours.

My POTD (program of the day):

Didn't manage to get pictures of them, though ;(
I couldn't get myself to go to one of those toilets, they were absolutely disgusting. Shit all over the place

I listened to the Kaiser Chiefs, because I liked their music from the beginning, and knew that they were going to hit it big later on. As always, their music was great and didn't lose any hawtness being performed live. They made quite a show out of it too, with a few acrobatic moves.
The singer's leg was broken at Pukkelpop last year, but that didn't stop him from jumping into the crowd :D

Now it was time for Placebo. I liked their music, although it sounded a bit similar sometimes. Brian Molko's voice is still very clear live, though. There wasn't much show to it. In the middle of the concert, Brian fell on the ground exhausted after singing an incredibly long song.
All part of the act, quite funny like he was lying there and kicking with his legs in the air :p

Placebo were my absolutely favorite, because they have so much great songs. Too bad they didn't cover "Where is my mind". "Infra-red" was a wonderful kick-off. Some people don't seem to like their music, but who cares.

dEUS was up next, but my girlfriend practically fell asleep where she stood, so I was forced to miss this Belgian band. No matter, I'll probably see them in later versions of Rock Werchter.
You've got a very wise girlfriend. dEUS sucked imo, I'm really not interested in their music. And their show was absolutely awfull, they had these white lights that kept on flashing on and off, I was glad I'm not epileptic...

While on the way to the campsite, I encountered a few policewomen on horses. While they were patrolling, they got loads of whistles from drunk festivalgoers. You had to see their faces, they were blushing like mad :D
Haha, that was absolutely awsome. We got some pictures of us smiling in front of those police people :D

Oh yeah, I got attacked by a drunk man on my way back, but unfortunately it didn't come to a fight :(

Conclusion: Four days of Rock Werchter + camping next year! :stare:

Rockchinese ftw. Not going to Pukkelpop, though. Although I'm really considering sneaking in to watch Daft Punk.
