As most of you know, and definately those of you who are ATi Card owners, TruForm is the technology ATi incorporated that is perfect for Half Life 2. I got serious boost in performance in CSS once i turned tru form on.... DONT forget to turn it on in ur display properties before you commence owning.

Truform? Please tell me what this is or how to turn it on?

u can turn it on in ur ATi control panel if u have an ATi card, goto the 3d tab and click on custom settings. then look through the list to the bottom, turn vsync off (unless u like it, i dont) and set turform to app preferencee along with AA and AF (U can change those in game)
hope i was of help to u

in Windows display properties go to advanced.. its in one of the Ati tabs.
i am more interested in confirmation on truform providing better performance before i change anything :p

I thought Truform increases the polygons in a model. How could you get better FPS with that?

Truform does nothing...from what I heard, it only helps with older OpenGL and D3D games....so what I heard...

truform gave me serious performance boost, i.e. 5-10% boost
i dont know the specifics of the truform technology but i do know that the back of my Ati box raves about Truform and HL2 and what a sexy couple they are.

My bro's friend said he's 100% to turn OF truform. I'm going with him. And maybe it's the card I have too.

Truform does nothing ...however TRUFORM II does. It started with the 9700, and will increase performance. It also will make rounded things more round, and actually lessens the load on anti-aliasing(where most of the performance boost comes from). Give it a try with temporal AA...and if you have a recent card, those 2, with 3Dc added into the mix, may just give you the best possible experience.

BTW, HL2 SUPPORTS TRUFORM. Now, why would they add it to the game(as that is neccesary) if it did not make a difference?

Before you tell people to not try it, go give it a try...if it doesn't work, turn it off...but i think you'll be leaving it on after.

There's a detailed thread on steampowered, and quite a few other forums, about the subject, but the one on steampowered relates to HL2/CS:S.

cadaveca, thank you. im glad someone sees what im saying.
also if any of you read that IGN Guide, it tells you to turn it on, so there! ;-)

Hmmm... I've heard many sources say that Truform decreases FPS. Which makes sense, since it's like turning on FFAA and the like.

In the ATi Setting Panels it says that having TRUFORM off will be more performance friendly while having TRUFORM on will be more quality friendly.

Wow. This has to be the first game ever to make decent use of this feature. I'll give it a shot.

I think that because of the technology being incorporated in half life 2, it will cause an increace in performance. I had read somewhere that the leaked beta performed much higher with truform on. also, i recieve performance boost in CSS like i said.

You guys should at least try it with CSS if you are interested. I know i got an increase so it may work for some of you as well.

I have the ATI Radeon 9800(all in wonder). It says Truform(tm), not Truform II, and says application preference rather then just 'turn on'. I think i'll give HL2 the preference.. i'll let IT decide!

ya set it to application pregference. the settings dont allow you to turn truform on per se, but if the game wants to use it, it can.

Oh please just turn it on! IT IMPROVES HL2 FPS ISNT THAT ENOUGH?

Maybe truform isn't the worthless piece of shit that only screws up all my games afterall. Thanks Half-life 2!

I'm not seeing anything about Truform in my ATI tabs of my advanced display properties dialog. I have a Radeon 9600 128mb, does it support Truform?

Does it help with CS Source? I could give a test ride until HL2 is released.

i said it helps with css... but it should help with hl2 as well IMO.

Oh, and to get to it, right click on ur Ati control panel in the system tray, then settings, then display settings. Then click the "3d" tab, change it to your custom srttings or check "Use custom settings" and then change them

i have a 9600XT with the 4.12 beta drivers and i have a truform tab (in the customise d3d and ogl settings) ....but not truform II

Yes it works

Right click on desktop...select properties.
Settings tab...then advanced button @ the bottom right.
3D tab...click custom @ top right.
TRUFORM is on the bottom of the page, and has 2 options...on, or application preference.

I have something called Smoothvision 2.1, do I need to upgrade my drivers?

I have Truform on and the visual quality seems to improve when I don't have anti-aliasing enabled. I'm running at 1024x768 and I can barely notice any jaggies. It does give me a performance boost since my average FPS is 65, well into the playable range.

TrueForm makes things look like crap.

It's most noticalbe with cs 1.6.

If you turn it on, it makes your weapon models look fat. TrueForm does not work like AA, it just makes flat surfaces apear rounded. Most of the time, the models look better as their were designed, flat. When you shap polys to look different, it makes it look wrong.

Turn off truform. Older ATI cards had an onboard truform chip, newer cards its done in software... incredibly slow.

On my 9800 Pro I got about half the framerate in RVS with it enabled.

sorry for el noobo question, what exactly does vertical synk and anti-aliasing do?, btw, i turned on TRUFORM for D3D and OpenGL

So if I select Application Preference it's technically on, right? I only have the Off and Application Prefernece options to choose from.

aight.. turned it on.
if i don't get a performance gain, im coming after u with a crowbar ;)
j/k!! :E

Even if you activate Truform in the ATi control pannel, means it's ON by default, but doesn't mean that the game has activated it (there's no such option in the Advanced graphics menu).

And there's no way TRUFORM increases performance!!!

TRUFORM "rounds" the polygons to make them look more realistic, but you have to be very close to the polygons to be able to see a change, and usually when a high poly model appears on the screen, the performance should drop by 90%! I'm not kidding. It's from personal experience of activating TRUFORM in other games through the games' configuration files.

ha ha ha this makes me laugh lol

I love when somebody tells something ridiculous about something he doesn't understand at all!!!!!! LMAO

TruForm is what has been making the shotty ammo and various other items in HL look fat? It's about time I figured that out. Wierdest freakin' thing ever.

I disabled (off) TruForm and ran the Stress Test, and ran it again enabled (application preference). I got 69.9 FPS with it off, and 70.7 FPS with it on. No changes to applications in the BG, but with the numbers that close, I'm pretty skeptical about there being a benefit, and I'm not about to run them enough times for statistical integrity in my analysis.

Perhaps tomorrow we'll know for sure!
