I benchmarked my old system with 3dMark2003 before putting my new system together for shits and giggles, and to give me something to compare the new system with. The result left me intrigued...

------------------------
Old System Specs
------------------------
P3 733 @ 785
MSI Mobo (can't remember what model, sorry)
512MB generic SDRAM
9600xt in a 4xAGP slot
ATI Catalyst 4.8 drivers
Windows XP Pro

------------------------
New System Specs
------------------------
AMD Athlon64 3200+
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
512MB Corsair XMS3200C2 DDR400
9600xt in an 8xAGP slot
ATI Catalyst 4.9 drivers
Windows XP Pro SP1

Old system's score = 3387
New system's score = 355x (can't remember the last figure)

Can someone tell me why I shouldn't be getting a better benchmark for my newer system? I can't see why it shouldn't give a greater difference between systems. Anyways, maybe you chaps could help me out.

Old = Samsung 40GB 7500rpm can't remember ATA rating

New = Western Digital Caviar SATA 120GB/8MB cache 7500rpm

Also (this should've gone in my original post but the edit time for that ran out), the amd chip was giving on marginally better framerates than the P3 was. In real terms though, it flys; I can extract and make rar archives so much quicker now, and can extract multiple movies while watching others without machine lag like I never used to be able to do, so that's why this is intriguing.

3dmark03 is heavily reliant on your graphics card above all else; you may get a bit higher with a 9600xt but don’t expect huge increase in 03 score. Submit your score and you will find it probably lies with other 9600xt’s. You should use 3dmark 2001se to test overall system performance, or heaven forbid use an actual game benchmark ;)

Yeah I'll do some game benchmarking when I get them installed, but the in the CPU tests, you would've sworn the P3 was in there lol!

Make sure you have inistalled your mobo drivers ;)

Make sure you have antialiasing and ansiotropic filtering disabled in the ATI control panel before running 3Dmark03

Also make sure you don't have vsync enabled, as that will cap your fps at the max value of your refreshrate. I did that when I upgraded. Really made me scratch my head a few times. :D

MOBO DRIVERS?

I am getting low fps in 3dmark03 myself..about 3700. I havent installed any mobo drivers because i didnt think there was such a thing, think if i downloaded a mobo driver it would help a great deal?

PS- and if theres no such thing as a mobo driver, damn you.

yea, it includes smartgart dirvers etc. brings your scores down as ur agp runs in pci.

Motherboard drivers. Yes, they make a huge difference.

Damn maybe thats what im missing.

Where do you get them?

im guessing from the Abit website (since thats the type of mbo i have).

From the website, or your motherboard should have come with a driver CD that includes motherboard drivers and other nifty utilities.

If you go to their website, don't download a bios update.

ok well im look on the mobo disk for some drivers now.....while i should be doing HW lol.

EDIT: ok on my mobo disk im looking at the drivers but theres a few
VIA 4in1 driver
Audio Driver
LAN driver
VIA USB 2.0 driver
VIA SATA RAID Driver
AMD64 processor driver

WHich should i install??

hell yeah! i installed them and i saw a 20+ fps increase with the source video test.

Im run 3dmark03 now.

EDIT: i got 4213 in 3dmark which i think is still low for my computer. Anyother drivers i should be looking for?

Could be the order you installed the drivers in.

It is recommending when building a computer, you then install windows, then all motherboard related drivers, then video card drivers, then other drivers not yet installed, and finally all software.

The low performance could be due to the fact that you installed your motherboard drivers after everything has affected your system. Or it could be something else. Too hard to tell to be honest.

Benchmark scores are hardly ever right, especially not 3DMark. Don't worry, as long as games run fine, there's nothing to worry.

well i was just playing CS:S with an average of 80 fps so i think im good.

Guess what clown forgot to install his VIA 4 in 1's? :(

/me beats self with a cricket bat

Just ran it again, and just got 4096, but am yet to test out ut2k4 and doom 3. Thanks for pointing out the obvious for me guys :D

4000 is actually a pretty good score - The thing capping your score is your grafics card and no matter how fast your processor is you wont get a much better score :)

Pretty much you're not gonna get your score any higher unless you get a better graphics card, as someone already said 3DMark03 is pretty much all GPU dependent, it's pretty good that your score went up about 200 just by upgrading the cpu. But for your card yeah that score is good.

Would reformating really make a difference?

or thats just your hunch and you dont recommend that?
