Ok, after floating around here for quite some time and seeing who... lives here :dozey: I have a feelen I may be flamed for this, but oh well. It's friday.

What exactly IS the benchmark? Do we have any idea in hell when it's being released, and I mean.. when it's "released" what can we do with it? Aye.. dumb question.

Never said I was a smart guy.

the benchmark is a program that allows you to see how well you can run the game. HL2's benchmark is the area that you see in the DX9 video that was released recently. The benchmark is supposed to come out on tuesday (the 30th)

you think will actually get to play it??

like one room with a minipulator or something?

So i get to see that big arse ant lion guy, in all his shininess and glory?? Hmm, I suppose I could have some fun walking around... Looken at the shininess n everything. With my glorious 3 fps!

I would love love love love to have the tech demo released instead.

That way I would be able to fire the pistol and manipulator gun at some objects and see the purty water.
And I want to shoot out that cool looking Gordon Freeman stain glass window.

Please Valve, if you are reading this... please release the tech demo since the game is delayed.. PPPLLEEEASSSEEEE!!!!!!!

You can't interact with it -- otherwise it wouldn't be a good benchmark. You just watch it.

I could've sworn it was mentioned by Valve that the benchmark utility would be included with HL2 in the box. That means if HL2 is delayed then so is the benchmark - of course, unless Valve decides to give us a treat - which probably won't happen.

The benchmark wouldn't be playable and it uses the source engine to run in real time to test your computer's capabilities using that engine.

What would be the purpose of releasing a benchmark, IN the box, with HL2? I mean, you got the game, you're gonna install and run the benchmark before the game to see if the game you just bought will run arlight? I think not.. lol

No , that would be cool and inspire loyalty and patience. Valve isnt going to do this , but what you CAN look forward to is another delay.. and another...ect.

It would take an inconceivable amount of time and effort to release the tech demo as a stand alone demo from the game. It's just pointless.

Shouldn't this benchmark have been released ages ago?

umm....chances are if they showed it at E3, etc they already HAVE it as stand alone.

It would take hardly anything to release it.

I just want the game.. a demo would be nice too, the benchmark would be positive progress none the less.

Um, no. You didn't see anything at E3 besides the demo itself, it's not like they just burned an exe onto a CD and loaded it up, they were most likely running it off of a development PC.

I'll be satisfied with anything new Valve releases. I don't care if it's a new video, the benchmark, a playable tech demo...a beta leak...anything.

Not really, seeing as things aren't finish (aka the delay). A benchmark is statistical information about how well a piece of hardware completes a task. You could have benchmarks for Graphics cards, cpu's, mobo...etc

hmmm.

well if there was a benchmark release like a demo. i think that valve would want to release it when the game is finished and the bugs or what ever the delay reason is to be done. so they can release the game a week after the benchmark.

But they had to make the demo in the first place to take the movie.
They wouldn't have just put up the gman talking, with the camera and stuff, and the stained glass, etc in the game...

Dude, seriously... go to time out. They are going to release a benchmark where you render scenes from HL2 in real-time, but only get to watch, not play. This is going to be on September 30th, this is actual fact, because they've already given the benchmark out to benchmarking sites, and HL2 has now been benchmarked to death. It's public release is seriously still on for September 30th, unlike the actual game.

Other games don't do it because they refuse to acknowledge the community that pretty much makes up www.hardocp.com whereas valve HAS acknowledged the community and is going to help us out.

there will not be any playing, it will just runs ome tests and analyze your system, then you will come here and flood this saying your comp cant run it, except for 5 people who say theirs can

its a bit strange though.....

A benchmark only comes out when the game is done and optimized. But there is never an always. Or it could be they delayed it for holidays for more money, but then again its not like if they would have released it on the 30th they would get bad sell numbers, its going to make a profit either way. The only explaination for the delay would be the game isnt done yet, and if that is the case, I doubt the benchmark will come out. We shall see, not a long wait now.

A benchmark for has been released, and the game won't be on shelves for months.

They released the benchmark before the game was even fully optimized. Egosoft (developer) has said that the latest builds are running smoother than the benchmark.

Don't treat your guesses as facts.

The HL2 benchmark has already been shown to people from the press. I don't know why you people think it's going to be something else.

The purpose of the benchmark IN box would be for using it as a STANDARD for which to base fps off of. It would be the official Valve HL2 Benchmark so that apples would be compared to apples in testing your PCs settings (rez, game settings, etc.). i.e. it would mostly be for the enthusiasts and those who like to measure their e-penis. Not that there's anything wrong with that ;)

Yeah, they're going to release the benchmark just like they're going to release Half Life 2 ontime! :p

I still say they aren't going to release the benchmark on the 30th, but with the game when it's released for reasons gmaniac described. I can't remember where I read it but that's what was said by Valve - in the box with the game. Just like UT2k3 has..

I could understand releasing a benchmark at the same TIME as the game, but not a standalone benchmark with the game. I mean, sure, a built in benchmark, such as timedemo in Q3, makes sense. But, a standalone benchmark released with a product for the product doesn't make alot of sense.

I just hope they don't keep screwing everyone by releasing on steam.

Why would they release a benchmark of an unfinished game.If they do it means nvidia tweaking is done or it will be pointless.

ummm the benchmark has already been released to some game sites (gamespot for example) all they have to do is give it to us

Agreed. Steam works beautifully for me, always has since day one of the beta. Only downfall is/was a lack of bandwith for big releases, other than that, it's great

i'm curious.. but when they say steam content servers... who is serving the content? since its not won anymore, valve owns there own now and is just dishing the money for it?
