anybody know if there's any official demos around that I could run a timedemo with and compare results?

I was trying to use the demos & info AnandTech posted in an article but it doens't seem to work now. (article link)

I've been getting this error message when I try to run these demos now.
Code:
ERROR: demo network protocol 6 outdated, engine version is 7
Failed to read demo header.
Dropped Astronaut_Bread from server
Reason: Server shutting down

I assume this just means the demo files (which were recorded a few weeks ago) are old and the game has had updates since then. Is there a way to run the old demos? or does valve have official demos for benchmarking?

What about the video stress test? Doesn't that work or do you want something that is more in game benchmark.

AFAIK when Valve updated HL2 the other day via Steam, pre-recorded timedemos no longer work with the new exe.

It says so in the blog section of anandtech.com :)

edit: if you go to the blog page there's a link to newly recorded demos, but they aren't identical to the original ones apparently.

Ah thanks. I figured that's what happened. I did a quick once over of the forums figuring there might be a thread about the update but couldn't find one. You don't happen to have a link do you?

If you open up Counter Strike: source there is an option to do a video stress test. At the end of the test it will give you some stats.

ahh ok thanks. I hadn't even opened up CS:S since I bought the retail version of the game. hehe.

i don't like the counter strike stress test much becuase it doesn't stress the cpu at all. i tried using two different cpus in my comp and got almost identical scores.

Hence the name video stress test.
