I put what to me is the three biggest name 2D Fighting game series, and have an option if you just HAVE TO put another series.

Let the voting begin! :burp:

Street Fighter series.

That said, I'm not the world's biggest 2D fighter fan, so yeah, other than Arcades I haven't had much experience.

Um, Mortal Kombat series without a doubt.

MK has gone WAY downhill since it's 123 days. It just does not even compare.

I guess though my statement is self-defeating being as 1 2 and 3 are the 2d ones.

Ya, I was about to say...

That said, yeah, I only played Deadly Alliance, but man was it a shit heap of a game.

I think he was talking about the original 2d mortal kombat games, to which i agree with.

I'm probably more of an SNK fanboy than anything else, not to say that I don't look back fondly on the Street Fighter series...

I also enjoyed Garou: Mark of the Wolves and to some extent the likes of Samurai Showdown and even the Last Blade titles. Guess that means I'll have to vote for KoF so SNK finally get a point :p

King of FIghters? Guilty Gears? Never heard of them.

It has to be Street Fighter, closely followed my King of Fighters. KoF98 is one of the best 2d fighters i've played. Last Blade and Samurai Showdown are also very good. MK would be waaaaay down on the list.

:| GTFO! D:

<3

I remember playing Mortal Kombat 1 + 2 at the arcades with my buds, it was a blast.
But tbh, I'm not a huge fan of fighter games anymore. MK ftw though.

You're telling me some King of Fighters is more popular than Mortal Kombat? Guilty Gear as well, for that matter (though I've played it).

Amoungst 2d fighter fans, most definately. KoF is almost on par with SF - with a few in the series actually being better than some SFs that have been released over the years.

I remember the Marvel vs Capcom games being great fun. I haven't really played many other fighting games though.

I grew up playing Stree Fighter however, I think Gulty Gear is now my favorite 2D fighting game, not only is GG way superior in the graphics department being the only one with High Definition sprites and animations, but it's gameplay its really fast and dinamic, I also love the way you perform the combos, you guys should play this game more it's really wonderful, also don't quote me on this but I think GG is way bigger in Japan than the Street Fighter series...

Have to say Street Fighter Series never was a big fan but watching a friend play or some of the pro videos. It just seems like the best.

Mortal Kombat 100%. All other 2d fighters must bow down before MK's greatness. And why the hell isnt it on the list

cause once the novelty of the fatalities wears off you discover it sucks!

As of current, that seems to be the case.

Well, I DID think about it, but ended up scratching it off, mainly because it isn't a big name ANYMORE. Plus, it seemed totally out of place in terms of how it plays.

Mortal Combat
Why is that not on the poll?
WTF?

D: I remember clay fighter.
Memories.........

I vote Capcom VS SNK. I never really enjoyed much of the Street Fighter series, and even less for MK...but I'm sure that's just my opinion...

KI was 2 1/2D. Rendered sprites but the backrounds were 3D. KI2 had revolving environments. The gameplay and tactics were 2D, so it is a 2D game. One of my favorites along with Marvel Vs Capcom.

I have to point out the biggest flaw of MK was the absolute shit fighting system. Jump, fireball, block, uppercut. The characters were not balanced at all, there were no teirs, and the entire game is mediocre in every respect.
That's not to say it wasn't a blast, it was.

But I have this on good authority, and I can take pics of the polls from my early 90s EGMs, Street Fighter 2: TWW is the most popular 2D fighter of all time. It was ranked #1 across the world even as SSF2T, MK3U, KoF 95, and SS2 were out. The competition at the time wasn't as good as it is now, but nothing can ever defeat the popularity and take the throne of Street Fighter. That's why it has like 4 movies and 2 animated series, and everything else has what? Nothing. Maybe a couple animes.

KoF has some animted shorts out titled "Another Day", but as cool as they are, they are pretty pointless.

DARKSTALKERS

Capcom has never again produced something that great. Vampire's popularity is in the gutter over here, and even in Japan I think its following would be considered mediocre at best, but it's bar-none the greatest fighting game I have, or ever will play.

It's too bad that the two animated series, V and the American cartoon, sucked so terribly. Generations also sucks, but the original animated movie and Zero were awesome.

Comparatively, though, the FF/SNK series put out better movies. The three Fatal Fury movies were a lot better than the SF movies, at least in my opinion. And Another Day was, like you said, pointless but cool.

Darkstalkers had a short 4-part anime series too, that was very awesome and surprisingly close to canon, right up until the end. It focused mainly on Demitri, Morrigan, and Donovan (and by proxy, Anita). It also had a terrible US cartoon like Street Fighter; the only good thing to ever come out of that was the song "Trouble Man."

It's interesting, the lack of popularity Dark Stalkers has. It WAS the first game made exclusive to the hit-generating CPS-2 board, it was also Capcom's biggest advancement in the 2D fighter genre since Street Fighter 2, and it remains that way today.

I'm gonna guess reason for it's lack of popularity outside of Japan is because of it's niche atmosphere.

PS: The original animated movie was good, but Zero/Alpha sucked IIRC.

I love V and I think the American show is hilarious. I have a few eps on DVD. Laughs a minute.
I have the 3 movies, and of them Generations is the only canon one. I think that along with the animation style ranks it highly for me.

Though Alpha's story made no sense, the animation and battles were absolutely killer. Gouki's appearance was epic, and his line equally so:
"Where I walk, I walk alone... where I fight, I fight alone."
Awesome.

I have the first two FF movies and they are awesome. I rented the Armor of Mars and I think it's the best, but FF movies don't really focus on any character development other than Terry. Everyone just kinda pops up, fights, has a few lines and they are done. Most of characters die which is dumb.

I saw that one, it was pretty good. Darkstalkers/Nightwarriors in general is pretty awesome. I've always considered it a kooky version of SF. Talbain ftw.

That's true, I was trying to figure out the story/what the was going on, which ended up ruining the experience. The Animation and fight scenes were pretty badass now that I think about.

And since I forgot to comment on the V series, yes, it started rather boring. But late in the series the episodes got friggin awesome

The reason I didn't like V and Generations were with the animation, rather than the story. I didn't like the character design, namely on Ryu in V and Gouki in Generations. Everytime I saw Gouki I was like, "Oh, God." D:

It's not a terribly good reason but I just can't get behind watching those two movies because of that.

My friends and I always laugh at that line. It's a great line, but he's not fighting alone, now is he? Otherwise he'd be fighting himself. We always quote that line when someone plays Gouki in CvS2, especially since no one ever does a R4 Gouki; he's always fighting in a team.

Armor of the Gods is so sick. I've been meaning to watch that again soon; it's been awhile since I saw it. Nothing describes what you said about characters popping up better than the scene in that movie where Geese shows up for NO REASON, breaks apart a forest with rising storm, and disappears for the rest of the movie. I love that scene so much; it's just so random.

^5, Talbain's the best. So underappreciated.

I think another reason it wasn't popular was because of the scene at the time. Darkstalkers was released in 1994, when SF2 was even then still going pretty strong, and Mortal Kombat (2) was the big crowd-drawer for arcades. King of Fighters also was released in '94. And while I clearly remember Virtua Fighter sitting alone and unused in a corner of my local mall's arcade in '93, while everyone was spending their 75 cents on the large-screen MK machine, VF2 came out in 1994 and that got a LOT of play. So with all that fighting goodness, most arcades just passed over Darkstalkers. People were just like "eh" about it. I personally wouldn't have known about Darkstalkers had I not discovered a Vampire Hunter arcade machine one night in a Circus Circus arcade in Reno.

I think had it been picked up by more arcades it would have a much bigger fanbase than it does now. It was really a timing thing.

I think it's just his way of saying "I don't get any poon" as it was in response to Ryu's question of whether he is his father.

No poon.
That's why he's so angry.
