I never played them, so i wouldn't know. I played mortal kombat once or twice but that was it. Fighting games never seemed really appealing to me.

I think another reason it wasn't popular was because of the scene at the time. Darkstalkers was released in 1994, when SF2 was even then still going pretty strong, and Mortal Kombat (2) was the big crowd-drawer for arcades. King of Fighters also was released in '94. And while I clearly remember Virtua Fighter sitting alone and unused in a corner of my local mall's arcade in '93, while everyone was spending their 75 cents on the large-screen MK machine, VF2 came out in 1994 and that got a LOT of play. So with all that fighting goodness, most arcades just passed over Darkstalkers. People were just like "eh" about it. I personally wouldn't have known about Darkstalkers had I not discovered a Vampire Hunter arcade machine one night in a Circus Circus arcade in Reno.

I think had it been picked up by more arcades it would have a much bigger fanbase than it does now. It was really a timing thing.

I'd say your right about timing, as arcades didn't want to eclipse the popularity of the newest SF2 cabinet. Though I don't think Mortal Kombat has any influence on that decision, though, as that was a totally different demographic than the Street Fighter crowd.

Thank god it was reasonably popular in Japan, as it introduced so many now-core fighting mechanics that might have been dumped otherwise.

Yeah. Chain combos, dash, airblock...

I think Mortal Kombat was pretty influential on what came out at the time. That thing was a money hog; even Street Fighter was passed up by people who wanted to play MK.

Mortal Komat didn't create chain combos, though I guess I can't say I know who did. Dash was created by SNK. Airblock was created by, ironically, Darkstalkers.

However, I will give them the credit for creating the air juggling mechanic, a big part of todays 2D fighters.

Edit: And after re-reading wrote you wrote, it appears you mistook what I was saying. You think I was saying it wasn't a big influence future games. What I was actually saying is I don't think it changed the fact that not many arcades decided to buy a DarkStalkers cabinet.

I was saying that Darkstalkers was responsible for chain combos, not MK. That's what I meant by "chain combos, dash, airblock..."; I was saying that those came from Darkstalkers. Guess I might be wrong about the dash, though.

And I didn't mistake what you said. I was saying that I think MK WAS a factor that arcades didn't buy Darkstalkers machines, simply because they already had more coin-crunching fighters than they needed. There's no sense in having a Street Fighter machine, a Mortal Kombat machine, one of those four-in-one SNK cabinets, and a Darkstalkers game. And since MK was the draw back then, most arcades probably looked at it like, "Why spend money on something that isn't popular and in the public eye right now?" (referring to Darkstalkers)

Oh, okay. Lol, I thought you were being sarcastic, it appears I'm the one that misundertood. :P That's cool to know it created Chain combos, and IIRC, it did something big in terms of the super guage/super combo/super move area, but I can't remember what it is...
