Best 3 hours of gaming EVER--Period. Lives up to the expectations and then some.

I played from 3:20am to 6:00am EST. I am taking a break because I am tired and hungry :)

I was not expecting this. GameSpot had no clue what they are talking about--IGN, PC Gamer, GameInformer, Edge, and all the others had it right. Best FPS ever.

How can I say that after 3 hours?

Simple: Total immersion.

You FEEL like you are in City 17. EVERY detail has been strenously planned and laid out. The placement of health, enemies, new weapons, etc... is amazingly good.

The detail is truly amazing, and this is because of the engine. The graphics engine is a suprise--It is not dated at all. It is up there with Doom3 and FarCry EASILY. The art style and the engine are married perfectly which makes it the PRETTIEST game I have ever played. The animations and jestures are very lifelike, the lip sync is incredible. Wow--all I can say.

But the sound does as much for immersion. I have an Audigy 2 ZS and the 5.1 sound is excellent. And there are a ton of nuances, like when under water things sound different. The music hits just right and everything has a great sound.

The AI of the Combine is great. They flank, they take cover, they work together as pairs covering for eachother while the other reloads--great stuff. The scripting is also excellent. The characters are so real that you really feel like you are there. The immersion makes the game very welcoming.

The airboat is great and has a lot of neat little "tricks" you need to watch for. LOTS and LOTS of puzzles so far--but not dumb ones. They actually make sense and are a NATURAL extension of the game. My favorite part so far is the first 30 minutes when you FEEL the oppression of City 17.

I would love to say more, but I do not want to give away spoilers or ruin the game for anyone. This is the first game that made me FEEL like I was in a movie--HL2 is not just a game, but an experience. I usually HATE single player games but they are so boring, repetitive, and the enemies are dumb and uninteresting. HL2 really avoids all those pitfalls and plays out as a great action movie sequence set in a Sci Fi setting.

For any of you who were worried about the GameSpot review, don't be. The game lives up to the hype and actually exceeded my expectations.

My only suggestion is that if you are pretty good at gaming, do it on hard. I am finding normal a little too easy. I have only died 2x, and both times were because I tried to out gun a large number of combine when there was an easier solution. There is a lot of health refilling stations, so if you are a good FPS type who gets headshots easily then go Hard.

Now go play, be immersed, and enjoy the EXPERIENCE HL2 is. :)

i dont think GI and IGN though it was the best FPS ever, because the both reviewed halo2 higher

Very nice indeed!

Only problem is that I'm scared most of the time :(

Lol, im not in City 17 yet. :( im having problems on the water hazard map. Well in the beggining I was but not where you fight striders or anything like that.

Based on what I've seen so far, 9.2 is most definitely a low score.

Not sure where I am right now.

I'm stuck somewhere, don't know what to do.

Based on what I've played, giving HL2 a 9.2, is a crime.

You cant even compare Halo 2 to the quality of Half Life 2

Based on my 3 hours of gaming (Stopped at Ravenholm) it is byfar THE BEST game EVER!!! I always hate single player games because of the reasons stated above, but oh my god, this game...its like...the holy grail of all games...total immersion, extremely fun to play, and the graphics, oh my...gorgeous! And im playing on a mid range card, yet I can get away with 1024x768 everything on high and not have ANY FPS problems! (on a 9500Pro) Im creaming my pants just thinking about how good this game would look on a higher end card. And I just cant get over how totally immersed you are and how well the charicters "act", you would think that they are Real actors!
The one thing that comes to mind is the scene where you get to practice with the gravity gun, excellent, excellent, excellent scripting/AI extremely believable!
Over all 10/10 there are NO gripes with this game.
No hazard course...that I know of...

Silly comment, but has anybody else noticed that you cant move any over hanging lights?. The that are dangling down. Shoot it but it doesn't swing (like 'Farcry').

No biggy, I know but Shoot a plastic bottle in the water and it flys off. So why not lights dammit.

;)

Gamespot officially has no idea - from the first few hours playing i've experienced more suspense than even my previous favourite, Deus Ex.

Absolutely f**king stupendous.

It took me about 10 mins to get over throwing stuff at the combine :p

And it's me first post :afro:

Don't forget that Gamespot is the same site that gave Deus Ex an 8.2, System Shock 2 an 8.5, yet gives every crappy ea sports game that comes out a score in the nines. They really don't have a clue.

I agree. I got sick of those flying cameras watching my every move very quickly!

Half-Life 2 has been more entertaining in two hours than Doom 3 was in 20.

i think they get bribed!
that is why it is the good games that get lower scores!
only the good game makers don't bride!
how else can you exsplain halo 2 getting better score?

I knew it. Gamespot's reviews are always crap. And now they've done it again with HL2. They gave it a score of 9.2. I'm sorry, but that's not good enough. Sure, anything above 9 means excellent . . . but look at all the other review sites. For example, IGN gave it a 9.7.

After such an excellent "Last Hours" article, they give us a review like this. Where they say HL2 isn't revolutionary at all, and pick on the smallest things. Gamespot sucks.

They gave deus ex what?! Are u sure this isnt the rating for invisable war? now i know for sure not to take Gamespots reviews seriously. I want to take a crowbar to that reviewers head so badly and mabey knock some sense into the guy

There has been so many cool little moments so far and i'm only 2 or so hours in.

Loads of little puzzles (balancing all those bricks on one end of the wood to let you jump on it to get onto a ledge. Hitting those planks holding the huge fallen tower thingy was pretty scary. You could hear it creeking with each broken piece of wood.

Also, the combines throwing flaming barrels into the water at you, also, throwing a barrel onto a barnacle's tongue then blowing it up. Very cool. I've forgotten so many others.

guys, is this game still bugy or not, cause I have tha game but havn't played it yet.

tell me guys please, I am so scared

Bugy? Buggy? I haven't seen any bugs other than ATI 4.12 beta drivers made my game REALLY slow when I saw water. I used ATI's official drivers and now runs amazingly. I concurr with everything said above in favour of HL2. It really is THE best fps and game I have ever played! :D

You review games in relation to what platform their on.

You cant give a GBA game a 2% cos it looks like crap, you give it a make in relation to the GBA.

If Halo 2 was on the PC i bet it would receive 88% or something.

I disagree with GS comments about the story (after reading GS I read IGNs again and GameInformer and they both said it was a great story... PC Gamer said the same I believe).

Also, GS said the first half was not very directed... I have not had ANY problems. Everything makes sense and I have not felt lost. FarCry on the other hand you often felt lost. That is the problem with a single guy giving a review... too much personal taste.

I am just shocked that the totally cohesive and immersive presentation of Hl2--you feel like your in a great action movie and it makes you feel SMART and WITTY!--did not get a 10 alone. You add all the great acting, physics, puzzles, weapons, sounds, and on and on... and ~20 hrs of this. How could this not get a better rating than games like FarCry?

GS missed the boat... I just got back up so I am going BACK to playing :)

Btw, No bugs here. My cousin and I are both playing right now.

My system: P4 2.85GHz, 1GB DDR400, 6800GT, Audify 2 ZS.

Cousins: P4 2.533GHz, 512MB DDR333, Radeon 9700 (Cat. 4.9), SB Live Value.

How can you say it's the best game ever when you've only played it for three hours...

If you ask that question you haven't played the game yet. You'll see why everyone is raving about it when you do.

Because those three hours have been better than anything I've played since, well, since the original Half-Life!

Man you guys are getting me so damn excited.

I have HL2 sitting in front of me now, in the retail box. I can just feel its greatness radiating from the box. I just have to wait another excruciating hour until my PC is repaired.

Here's one to valve!

Because they don't have dynamic lighting and shadows. If they let you move the static lights, it would look very strange to see the light swing around while the shadows remain the same.

NOTE: Fanboys - DON'T START A FLAMEWAR on me, I love the game; I'm just answering his question.

It takes too long to explain :) Just play it and I think you will agree. Even if you do not think it is the best ever, you will undoubtably understand WHY some of us think so.

HL2 is NOT a game, it is an experience set in the world of Black Mesa that interacts as if it were a game.

definetley the best FPS of all time, an absoulutley beautiful game. but i agree with gamespots review to an extent.
Im half way through the game and i must agree that the story (or lack of it) is dissapointing.
with a stronger story this would have had a 9.5+/10
Too many questions unanswered in HL2. maybe some will be told at the end.
