For me, it was when you jump into the people pod inside the Citadel. This two dollar tour shows you creatures yet to come, and shows how they 'grow' the biological airships. HL at it's best!

The ribbly glass windows in the apartements, so goddamn realistic!
And the 357 skin, beautiful!

The 'realtime radiosity' indirect lighting on people's faces, combined with normal mapped characters.

All the animations, but especially that Strider crouch animation, lovely!

And the list goes on.

The moment i stepped out from the trainstation and into the plaza...wow

I have to agree with both of you, but Samon,, youre right, that first sun drenched visit to the plaza was awesome. It struck me at that moment, how visually 'real' these games are becoming.

bronzer what settings you play on? that looks like shit!@

When you see the train pass by when you are about to jump down into the "Route Canal" episode. Very nice.

When walking out from the train station and looking around the plaza, its so nice it almost feels like you are in there yourself.

Walking below that bridge is one of the best moments in Half-Life 2. It almost felt like when you walked on the cliffside in Half-Life.

When DOG is fighting the APC is so gorgeous and then throwing it into the building part where there are several Combines in and just smashing it. :)

Indeed, also i felt it was the view of the citadel as well..the breen screen...the scanners...combine machinery buzzing in your ears...

Another favourite part was most definatly the drop pod sequence..that was aboustly superb (route kanal)

When you go up in the elevator on the way to Breen's office.
The view of 17 from a mile high...

I found that scene was rather cheap, I really noticed that the city was a simple bitmap with a not really high resolution. And I had my graphic settings quite high...

The slo mo explosion at the end.

All the scanners leaving the Citadel sent a chill down my spine.

I loved the water all through the game. It looked so realistic. Even my dad said "Wow" when he saw the one of the backgrounds for the menu (the water hazard one).

Screenies! (sorry for crap quality etc, had to resize and what not.)

The entire airboat sequence.

The ambience of the canals are perfect. I just jump off the airboat and walk around listening to the wind and the birds...excellent.

Also, I wonder what type of birds are featured in the water canals? They sing but you never see them...I have definately heard those birds somewhere in real life...and in similar surroundings.

I too liked this. Here's a screenie:

I've been taking quite a few screenshots on my third time through the game. Here are some things that particuarlly caught my eye:

Neato bumpmapping on the Antlion: link

The bizarre a wonderful crab-esque dropship landing near the lighthouse: link (there's a wonderful shot of this in Raising the Bar)

Alyx speaking to the captured Eli: link

Dog and his habitual ownage: link

Seeing the citadel for the first time through the window in the train station

I remember looking up at the helicopter dropping mines in my path as techno music pounded out of my speakers and the sun glared through its spinning blades and the photorealistic water sprayed out from under the chopper and thinking:

"I need to pause the game and go get a fresh pair of underwear."

i agree with braska- the ride up to the top of the citadel was a letdown grapically- the view of the city was pretty average- EXTREME low detail.

I thought the mile-high view was fine. The lights looked cool. Didn't bother me.

A gunship that forgot to explode:

amazing amount of texture and model work for something that's generally more than a few feet away from you

As for scenery, i loved the bridge. i have a fear of hights, and this was the first time a game has ever given me a tru felling of terror, not that artificial, ohnoasuddensound terror.

but, what i thought was the coolest looking thing in the game was the strider crouching and sweeping side to side with his cannon

Only problem with the glass doors is you can't shoot through them, and the glass has a wood splinter for it's hit sprite :\

Prettiest moment is walking out of the sewer pipe in red letter day, when the turbine thingy is spinning, and boxes are floating in the water and you have to swim under and through the passage.

after watching the E3 04 vids so many times, finally being able to stroll round the trainstation was worth the wait, must have spent 30 mins in their just picking up stuff & lobbing it...

truly awe inspiring, then I stepped out into the plaza & it really hit me how good this game is.

a joy to play, with only a couple of minus points loke the Citadel Lift ride.

Really nice screen shots guys! I have a good collection myself. Sometimes I set the resolution as high as it will go just to get some excellent screen shots. Personally I cant pick just one, because there are so many good sequences in this entire game. However, I think the entrance to Ravenholm was the one with the most "hair standing on neck" and highest overall impact. the first time through there I about peed myself.

Fido

wow murray that first screen is just class

You can even see ravenholm in the background

For me, the best moment in the game was after leaving the Kleiner's lab - seeing the citadel's parts move and birds flying away... awesome! There are more great moments in the game, but this one was probably the coolest. Also seeing flats almost identical to the ones I see through my window was mind-blowing ;)

I think that the gman is one of the Combine from the future. Maybe they grew over the ages and regret that they wiped out all those races so they began to free/ repopulate the dimensions/planets they wiped out. They began doing this by altering time itself.

That also, was fantastic, especially when barney just throws the crowbar

some of my 608 screenshots. the compression doesn't exactly make them better

1: after the slow teleport
2:alyx
3: uneven odds
4: no, it wasn't me!
5: captured

Well, I know I thought it was incredibly cool the very first time you got chased by the helicopter. Damn that chopper looked nice too.
Peek-a-boo

in my oppinion one of the best visual effects is when ure in the sewers. its the part where ure in a narrow sewer and there is sand in the bottom. the water looks so real! hope u no which part im on about
