In my opinion the greatest guitar solo of all time is the second solo to comfortably numb by pink floyd. The solo really hits the spot for me, its incredible. Whats your guys' favorite solos?

I do not want to see any rap solos or pop solos here, those do not deserve mentioning lol.

yngwie malmsteen - arpeggios from hell

dear god he is teh crappy ..all flash and technique absolutely no soul ..he's a Paganini hack

I can't Quit You Babe - Led Zeppelin

Great blues sounding guitar from start to finish.

Tornado of Souls - Megadeth
Stranger in a Strange Land - Maiden

hehe once again I must show off, i can play the unforgiven solo hehe  Anyway in my opinion, stairway is too overrated, comfortably numb is awesome, and I must say my guitar gently weeps solo is incredible it was eric clapton on guitar, so i would say it was by him and not the beatles.

Mark Knopfler
Nightwish
In Flames (The older albums)
Soilwork
Opeth

right... well... you'll notice i didn't list everything by him. i tend to agree with your assertion of yngwie, but the one song i mentioned is f*cking crazy. watch the video of him playing it and you'll drool. yngwie is a prick as well, can't even keep a band because he is so full of himself that no one wants to play with him.

Stevie Ray Vaughn - Live, Austin City Limits DVD (the whole thing is jaw-droppingly beautiful).

For me, the all time best guitar solo I've ever seen is Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin on "White Summer/Black Mountain Side".

I gotta hand it to Page again for "Dazed and Confused". Great stuff.

But I have to throw in Metallica's work on "One" and "Am I evil?" along with "Fade to Black".

Who can forget about ACDC's numerous solos and Tool? Oh so many good ones out there but for me, the best I've seen is the work from Led Zeppelin.

Lots of other good choices here on this thread though

Judas Priest, Megadeth, Manowar, Maiden, Zeplin and Hendrix gets the hair swinging.

Dream Theater - Under a Glass moon
Steve Vai - For the love of God
Nitro - Hey Mike (Holy Shiznit He's fast.)
Majestic - VooDoo Treasure
Kingdom Come - What Love Can Be

Even though I think Phish is kinda lame... Trey Anastasio's solos in the songs Billy Breathes and Reba are epic.

Oh, and anything played by Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman Bros.)

Any Led Zeppelin
Eruption - Van Halen
Misirlou - Dick Dale

mark knopfler - local hero live is just awesome, i almost cry when i hear it :upstare:

Does Metal really count?

I absolutely agree there. I'm not a huge Zepplin fan myself though I'm very familiar with their stuff. I find their solos uninspired. And also... I really don't consider Heavy Metal solos to count as real solos. I love metal, but the solos have no soul or power behind them. That's just my opinion though.

As for fav's, I'll have to agree that Comfortably Numb's second solo is possibly the best ever written. It's really, really beautiful. (Listen to any live version of that solo by Pink Floyd to TOTALLY understand what makes it so good.)

Although it's mostly just effects doing it, the solo from Audioslave's "Like a Stone" Is really great. Has a great sound to it.

hm.. as far as guitar players go, BB king has great solos.

Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin

Somewhere in the middle, dunno the time.

Any solo by David Gilmore will move you, no matter what, hes just inspiring. I dont think any band has ever come close to the musical genious of pink floyd especially when it comes to guitar solos, because its not so solo, and its not for show, its a part of the song, the guitar is being the vocalist, and I only see this is floyd, listen to shine on you crazy diamond, after he says a line i.e. remember when you were young, the guitar follows, and it sounds like its talking to you, its not there to be cool, to stand out, to ROCK YOUR WORLD, its there to be a part of it, to be beautiful, it doesnt seperate you from the music, you dont get lost in the guitar solo, you get lost in the music, the ambience. Only floyd does it and no one else, now in my opinion thats what makes their solos the best, but just because floyd does that, doesnt mean that other solos that dont CANT be the best, just in my opinion, the other ones that dont, arent the best in my opinion.

motley crue ..primal scream and home sweet home solos mick mars really shows what a guitar player he is!!!

hm...
Darkest Hour - Aquetis, Vertunis
Metallica - Fade to Black
Manowar - Hail and Kill
Creed - One Last Breath (Intro)

Hands down Zappa's solo in Willy the Pimp. It's a nine minute improv done so well, that guy is the best guitarist ever.

Anything by Steve Vai, he may be repetetive, but with him that's a good thing.

theta radiation sucks and half-life don.t stupid singularity

It's not the most technically impressive solo out there, but my favorite has always been the end of Dire Straights' "Sultans of Swing"

Almost anything from Joe Satriani. He taught Steve Vai, Larry Lalonde, and Kirk Hammet. Anyone who likes Vai should like Joe Satriani. For those interested, pick up his Anthology(The Electric Joe Satriani)

Im a huge Satriani fan

Peter Frampton, Van Halen, and Stevie Ray Vaughn have some amazingly tasty solos.
