i just read some threads, and most games that people say are the best of the best, are ones i dont have. So i need some suggestions on getting some of those games, but they have to be on a console, because i'm tired of computer games. i have a psone, and i was thinking that i could get a n64 since it is less than $30.
some games i would like to buy are:
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Metal Gear Solid
Maybe Goldeneye
Maybe Perfect Dark

Please Reply!

Edit: I don't want any ps2,xbox,etc. games. Just Retro.

Best game on both of those platforms would be Goldeneye for the N64.

Add to that list:
for ps
Ape escape
Abe's odyssee
Abe's exodus
Fear effect 1 & 2
Spiderman( the original game for the ps used the comic as a backstory and is a lot bettert hen the current spidermans IMO)
Incredible Crisis
Crach Team Rasing ( it has absolutely amazing, and I do mean amazing graphics for an ps game, And I like the car handling better then mario kart. But the nonetheless it is a shameless clone of mario kart, so if you can't stand clones, then don't buy it.)

For the N64
Majora's mask
1080 snowboarding
goldeneye
Banje kazooi
Banjo Tooi

PS1
- MGS
- FF7 and other FF collections
- Pretty much take your pick of awesome RPG's

N64
- Super Mario 64
- Goldeneye
- Ocarina of Time
- Conker's Bad Fur Day

Hell yea

Ogre Battle 64 is one of the best games I have ever played for the N64, and I am include Goldeneye and Perfect Dark and the other classics here. It had the deepest and most involving plot, with a branching storyline, multiple endings, and a huge length. I'm glad I held onto it, because apparently its rare and I've seen it being sold at Gamestop for ~$30.

I never had a PS1, so I don't know any good games for it, but here are some less-famous but still awesome games:

Winback: Covert Operations (for the love of god, get this! An aaawesome game.)

Hybrid Heaven (dunno how it holds up today, but I remember it being a blast)

Extreme G (best zoomy racer EVER, but the second is pretty much trash)

Twisted Edge: Extreme Snowboarding (name is crap, but it's actually really fun)

Doom 64 ('nuff said)

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (really really really really REALLY good adventure game that no-one's ever played. Overwhelmingly japanese, very silly, but still amazingly good. However, don't get the second one, as it's supposed to be bad)

Sin and Punishment (but only if you're using a modded/japanese N64- amazing on-rails shooter where all the voiceovers were in English, yet was inexplicably never brought outside of Japan)

Starfox 64 (need I say more?)

Jet Force Gemini (very fun, very huge futuristic third-person shooter)

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (one of the best sidescrollers I have ever played. Graphics are excellent for an N64 game, and it's just a ton of fun)

Mario Kart 64 (duh)

Hydro Thunder (wickedly cool port of an excellent arcade game- just very cool. Racing boats down ridiculous levels = the shit)

Paper Mario (another obvious one- greeeeeeeeat RPG)

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater/THPS2 (the originals- always fun)

Needless to say, also get Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, and all the big hits.

Some games for the PSX that I recommend:

Resident Evil 2
Destruction Derby 2
Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike (beware though, both these games offers some frustrating moments)
Micromachines V3
Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy VII

Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy 7/8/9
Front Mission 3
MGS
----------------------
Mario 64
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Conker's Bad Fur Day

N64
-Mace the Dark Age
-Mario
-Perfect Dark
-Goldeneye
-Turok 1

PS1
-Bushido Blade
-Tenchu 1

Conker's Bad Fur Day was such an awsome game. (Adventure/Platform)

Banjo Kazooie/Tooie same style as Conker... though not as absurd... (Adventure/Platform)

Yoshi Story Just a personal fav not everyone's cup o' tea (Adventure/Platform)

Perfect Dark even has stats for your multiplayer character (if you play multiplayer...) (FPS)

Goldeneye is a golden classic (FPS)

Mario Kart is quite, quite fun (Racing)

Mario Tennis... well i don't know why I like this one... I just do... (eer...tennis?)

Project 64 is for those who can't find a nintendo 64 that works, its the best emulator in existence for n64 (just incase of course) (Emulator)

well nuff said from me...

I never played the PS1, so all I've got is N64 suggestions.

Goldeneye 007 - Great game, classic.
Perfect Dark - Get this game. Not as "classic" as 007, but far, FAR better. My all-time favorite N64 game.
LoZ: Majora's Mask - Very nearly as good as Ocarina of Time.
Super Mario 64 - I love it.
Super Smash Bros. - I'm appalled that it hasn't been mentioned yet. My favorite 2D fighter.

Can't really remember any others that I sincerely loved.

I must have rented Perfect Dark about a dozen times. Not the best way to spend my money, but hey, I was like ten.

Super Smash Bros.
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Mario 64
Paper Mario
Perfect Dark
Kirby 64

PSX -

Soul Reaver
Cool Boarders 4
Twisted Metal 1 - 3
Final Fantasy 7, 8, & 9.

Aside from the ones already listed in this thread, I'd like to give an honorable mention to Vigilante 8 and it's sequel for the PlayStation. You really need to give either of these a shot.

Ok, seriously, has anybody else here played Winback? I must know... I need to remnisce.

I own Winback. Man that was a really long game. A bit repetitive, but still fun.

I grew up on Goldeneye and Zelda. But, if anything, get Zelda. It literally makes me cry thinking about all the good times I had playing that. Literally.

And guess what's the highest ranked game of all time?

Really, it has so many secrets that even when you beat the game you will still have a TON OF TIME to actually complete the game. I never had Majora's Mask until recently though, but I think Ocarina of Time is a must and if you want more get Majora's Mask.

maybe the first two medal of honours on psx, they were great, also silent hill if you want a survival horror, the legacy of kain:soul reaver on psx was also awesome...

spyro the dragon
crash bandicoot
gran turismo 2
tomb raider series
tekken series particurly 3
driver
resi 3:nemesis

You have to try "Buck Bumble" for the N64. It's an amazing game that hardly anyone has played apparently. I guess it can best be described as a third person flying shooter. You can control buck almost like he's a helicopter with hovering and moving up and down without going forward. You're a bee flying around a gigantic English countryside and fighting wasps, hornets, beetles and the like. Pretty cool story and spot on gameplay. The gameplay is fantastic. Definitely worth trying. If this is backward compatible with the Revolution and the new controller I don't know what I'd do.

Can't believe none of you mentioned Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for PS1. This is possibly the best game for the system and one of the best 2d adventure games ever.

Also get:
PS1: Final Fantasy 7/8
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil 2

N64: Zelda: Ocarina of Time(must-buy)
Goldeneye(must-buy)
Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Banjo Kazooie
Turok 1/2

PS1:
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy (VII and/or VIII and/or IX)
Metal Gear Solid
Castlevania (Symphony of the Night and/or Chronicles)
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story
Syphon Filter
Resident Evil (2 and/or Director's Cut)
Silent Hill
Tenchu: Stealth Assassins
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

N64:
Zelda (Ocarina of Time and/or Majora's Mask)
Super Mario 64
Super Smash Bros.
Paper Mario
Goldeneye
Mario Kart 64
Perfect Dark
Eternal Darkness
Harvest Moon 64
Donkey Kong 64

Hehe ^_^

Added:
N64:
Body Harvest (what i meant when i put harvest moon, but harvest mood is still a good game :p)
Super Smash bros.

PS1:
Crash Bandicoot (played this loads)

I feel that some sequels of ps1/n64 games in the current generation are not so good

No one's mentioned Body Harvest for the N64, great game that was

N64

Golden Eye
Perfect Dark
Zelda OoT
Mario 64

(all 4 still sit comfortably in my top 10 :))

PSX

FF7
MGS

There's loads of other good games for these systems, particulalrly the N64, but these are the titles that really stood out and grabbed that generation by the balls.
