I'm a huge RPG fan and have played so many of them, so I wondered what people considered the best RPG to be ever created (Zelda doesn't count :), just to make it more exiting).

If somebody mentions one that I haven't played, be assured I will get it and play it :)

Here are my favorite three:

1) Secret of Mana (SNES) [I spend approximatly 750 hours on this game, I have a perfect saved game with money and time maxed out :)]

2) Chrono Cross (PSX) [Played it through about 10 times, and still finding new stuff to do]

3) Knights of the Old Republic [Never have I been given more choise in an RPG, Fable comes close where it longer].

I know there are many posts like this already, but with HL2 going big we have a lot of new members :)

Marry Christmas

KOTOR is really the only one i've played, and that was utterly awesome.

Fable sucked and it wasn't even an RPG. Just an action game with side-quests, like Beyond Good and Evil (ALOT better).

(Merry Christmas by the way)

Final Fantasy 7 and 8

If you disagree I simply don't care...they are, it's a fact. (in my head)

Yeah, not a big fan of the FF series, I cannot quite put my finger on why I don't like it (they are above average RPGs, but there's something that just doesn't fit well with me, and it's not the turn based combat (chrono cross)).

I know at least some people consider Fallout and Fallout 2 to be among the best :)

As for others:

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy Tactics
KOTOR/KOTOR II
Earthbound
Morrowind

I can't believe no one's even mentioned Neverwinter Nights yet!!!

Not many of you are saying any of the Ultima series, some rpg fans you guys are *rolls eyes*

Even if counting Zelda, I must say Neverwinter Nights multiplayer and Planescape: Torment single player.

I think Zelda is highly over rated, it was fun...but it lacked a lot of things that make a great RPG.

In no particular order.

Secret of Mana (magical, pure fun - even better shared with 2 friends)
FF6 (best in the series)
Baldurs Gate 2 (epic)
Planescape Torment (best written, oozing atmosphere)

That's cause Zelda isn't an rpg :) - it's an action adventure with a few puzzles thrown in for good measure.

Final Fantasy ...all the ones i've played (7,8,9,10,XII - or whatever :P) are some of the finest games ever created.

Final fantasy 7 (no other game ive played gets you into the story from the very first minute like this one does. best game ive ever played)

Secret of mana (fun to play with friends and it's about 60 hours gameplay)

Chrono trigger (another fine squaresoft rpg)

Wtf, I see NO Elder Scrolls games in your list, you obviously haven't played them otherwise there'd ONLY be Elder Scrolls games.

No, you must get Morrowind: GOTY Edition, greatest RPG ever made, more than a hundred gameplay hours, way more. And if you have a Gamecube, get Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, I'm coming up on 30 hours of playtime (26:15).

I didnt like morrowind, to much time spent walking and the advancment system is one of the worst I have seen (Any system that encourages you to "bounce" when moving from location to location needs reworking).

True, i found all the walking an annoyance and it was fast jumping (plus you gained jump skill :p) I was also lost as to what to do, which missions to do. i felt i had no purpose and trying other missions i wasnt leveled up for enough.

On both the Gothics, i found the controls terrible, i'd have loved to got into Gothic 1 and 2 though, the story seemed great.

Morrowind, to me anyway is more fun played with my own rules, ignoring the real game, for the most part. And just doing my own thing, which is more fun when there's plenty of mods installed too.

I like that kind of freedom, I guess I am just spoiled from playing Dungeons & Dragons Pen & Paper, where you can do anything your character is capable off (IF you got a good Game Master).

SW KOTOR
FF7&8
Mario & luigi superstar saga

(1) Why didn't anybody mention Mario and Luigi superstar saga, thats a damn good rpg

(2) this is way to early, I mean Jade empire isn't even out yet, and it's probably going to be atleast5 times better then SW KOTOR

Mario and Luigi is sweet - as are the Paper Mario titles :) Not good enough to be considered 'the best' imo.

I'm suprised how few have mentioned Planescape Torment ........ writting in a video game doesn't get any better.

Jade Empire does look amazing.

FF7+FF9 for storyline
Diablo 2 for online fun (free)
Baldurs gate 2 for intense fun :D
Y's (sega master system game) for being my first RPG and its still quality stuff

Not gonna list all the ones I really enjoyed... if I had to pick a best, I'd say Arcanum.

FF3
FFVII
Chrono Trigger
KotOR

Honorable mentions:
Fallout
Super Mario RPG
Deus Ex

GET AWAY FROM ME YOU SICK CONSOLE GAMERS!!!
You have betrayed your PC, to make up for it, you must play 100's of hours of PC RPGs!!!

here are my faves, in no particular order...

Final fantasy 7 + 8 + 9 (OK, so some console games are allowed ;))
Baulders gate 2 (best PC RPG. if you haven't played it, buy it now. it's dirt cheap.)
Fallout 1+2 (like baulders gate, but post apocaliptic, and more freeform- No-one is invincible. You could kill anyone in the game, but the game would still be wonderful)
Morrowind (i have only played it for 10- 20 hours or so... because i drowned. I drowned in how big it was... but it's still amazing :D )
Deus ex (need i say more.)

there are loads more (KOTOR, fable, bloodlines etc.) but they're not as good ;) i enjoy playing them, though

Chrono Trigger is the best RPG of alll time, bar none. My infatuation with this game is beyond words. It is the quintessence of quintessenceness. It is more than a game. It is... A WAY OF LIFE!
