Best RPG of all time

I don't mean to be an A$$.. but your title doesn't make sense. Best RPG of all time??? No such thing. What your title should have said is "Best RPG of it's time"...I know...I suck...and I like being specific to a point where it makes people sick. :smoking:

Anyway...My favorite RPG would have to be Chrono Cross...for the amazing soundtrack..the best soundtrack I've heard. No game after that has matched it. Although Baten Kaidos comes close.

Chrono Trigger is the best RPG of alll time, bar none. My infatuation with this game is beyond words. It is the quintessence of quintessenceness. It is more than a game. It is... A WAY OF LIFE!
 <-maniacally

It is pretty fun, but I kept dying on some robot dood in the future.

Oh, and Baldur's Gate 2 is awesome too... I don't have enough time to dedicate to it...

i can't believe i forgot diablo 1 [and it's expansion] and diablo 2 [and it's epanxsion].

oh, and i add sacred to my list ;)

personally i don't like diablo- to me, half of an RPG is it's story (which is why i like FF games), and diablo is just "run around and bash things".

The Diablo games are horrible...i cant understand why people like them. "Go to this cave and kill those guys, go to that cave and kill those guys!"

Diablo was actually quite fun. It had a decent story. It had a great mood and atmosphere. 100% new levels each time. Diablo is rather great. I mean first blizzard game for b.net support. When it came with b.net...ohhh heaven :).

Diablo 2.....****ed it all up. the levels were barley diffrent each time. No real mood and atmosphere. The story had become complete crap. The community? Oh you mean the new character, rush, get to level 100, get items trade and start over. No damn point to this game now. Yes it can be fun but still no point. Lost what diablo had.
Diablo 2 can be fun, but no real point. Barley entertainment.

My favorites are (in no particular order, but the first one is my favorite)

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana

Of the diablo series I only played diablo 2 and I found it to repetetief, sacred was pretty good IMO, but M&L superstar saga, well it's so great cause well it's on the GBA and still manages to be more fun than most pc or console rpg for me. I'm not a diehard rpg fan, I do enjoy some action so I don't think I would like Baldurs gate1+2 cause I played Icewind Dale and I hated it, just don't like the D&D rules, although SW KOTOR implemented them very good IMO.

Icewind dale is way below the Baldurs Gate series in enjoyment.

Icewind dale is basically a tactical combat game with a little roleplaying thrown in here and there, the Baldurs Gate series however has quite a bit of roleplaying and good combat as well.

What is so tactical about Icewind Dale, it's just luck, if your dice rolls good you live if it doesn't your dead, no tactics involved.

My favorite was always Phantasy Star IV.

...but that's me.

Be quiet child, we all know Morrowind is king and I have _real_ mod powers to back that up, so put that in your magic pipe and smoke it :p

shinra, get back your old avatar. cloud looking at midgar OWNS cactar. it's a fact... probally ;)

*edit* and dark elf, morrowind is great but it's too big ;( I get lost in it so easily, whole nights i wasted trying to find some shitty dungeon, only to find that it was actually the name of some poncy elf in a tavern. It's an amazing game and achievement, but it's too big ;(

The more I play that game the more I'm convinced that they intentionally made the animations so that you look like a fairy when you run holding a two-handed sword ready to strike.

dude where the **** are u guys living at its GOTHIC 1 and 2 jeez....

Not gonna list all the ones I really enjoyed... if I had to pick a best, I'd say Arcanum.
Oh shit good point, thats great but my disk broke ;(.

Oh and TDE morrowind is cool but lots of bugs and I never got round to updating it :p

It's tiny! Honestly the island is really small, just feels big and the fact walking is slow. But it is pretty small really.

Get a house and do your own thing in it, steal from the rich and give to the poor, gets to be way more fun then.

All time: Citadel Utopia
Of it's time: I feel too inexperienced to say. I was very deprived as a child, I never had a Snes.

I'll say that Silver would be right up there if it was about 10 times as big (pity that), and I'll add Normality because no-one's mentioned it and it was actually pretty original for an RPG (no weapons ey?).

For those who aren't aware (what planet are you on?) there's a Source Mod called Return to Mana, so I'm guessing some of you should be very excited right now. Also I'm heading a Source RPG Mod, but I'm planning to have a team together for a few months down the line. There's a thread in the Help Wanted/Offered Forum.

Oh, the name? Citadel Utopia

Not that excited no considering Return to Mana haven't got permission to make the mod in the first place. But we've all been through that and its boring now.

Xenogears. Great "Sci-fi" RPG. I love it.

Final Fantasy 3 without a doubt in my mind, if you can get past the outdated graphics you will find the most involving characters, story, and an incredibly atmospheric game. Chrono Trigger has always been my second favorite. Earthbound was always a very fun lighthearted rpg for a much needed change of pace. Yeah...I loved super nintendo :D

erm ...

Fallout 1 & 2.
Final Fantasy VIII.

& System Shock II if it counts.

Yes, System Shock counts.
Secret of Mana though, is by far my #1. Especially because me and my best friend played it from beginning to end 2-player. That was an experience yet to be seen in another game.

Diablo is well-liked because of all the random items you can get and various builds you can make on your character. Note: I don't share the same sentiments about the game...I only enjoyed playing through the game with my friends like twice...then I got bored. My other friend played that game for hours and hours just doing Mephisto runs and going for items for other characters.

FF7 rules
Chrono Trigger rules
FF6 rules
Never could stay interested in Morrowind - it just felt like they sat you in a big empty world for you to sandbox in...and I didn't want to sandbox.
Baldur's Gate games kick ass too.

Never said Diablo. Say Diablo 2.
Amazingly Diablo is much diffrent than Diablo 2. In the atmosphere even. Maybe not so much that there both hack and slash or the....somewhat storylines. But Diablo had something Diablo 2 could never present. A somewhat...odd feeling... a feeling of suprise and fear. A feeling of scariness. Diablo had such a great point to it. How the storyline played out itself was not bad. Sure wasn't super super special. But wasn't bad. Had a great spooky feeling in the labryenth. Combined with great music.

Diablo 2 totally switched the tables. No longer a spooky feeling. A very weak storyline. Barely everyone duels or anything. The point to it all is pretty much gone. Here is what the average D2 person does on D2:
Make Character
Get Rush
Do Cow\Baal runs till lvl 99
Trade once in a while
Make Mule character.
Restart
Thats pretty much it. No real point to it alll.

The oringal diablo was amazingly fun. Since levels were REALLY randomized not the crap randomization d2 does. Every level was mysterious and new 100%. Rushing wasn't really there as there was no experince sharing. If you could remake D1, add a few new features that current games have. Update the graphics. Change the storyline make it a little better, and there ya go! You have one kick ass game.

The thought of Secret of Mana remade on source makes me want to be violently sick :/

It's probably my favourite game of all time - leave it as it is pls.

Yeah, Return to Mana makes me feel really ill.
Although the Squre-Enix remake of Secret of Mana for GBA sounds very promising, especially if they gdo it as much justice as they did FF Adventure (Sword of Mana)

Deus Ex
Those Chrono games and those FF games
There's alot more, just can't think of them
Also i guess WoW

Does Rivercity Ransom count? It was like a beat em' up with RPG elements, kinda like Deus Ex with FPS'

As for morrowind, i have no idea what people saw so intresting in the game, i hated it with a passion

RCR is where it's at. A local collector's store near me has it for $30. It's very tempting...
Also, there's the GBA remake that looks sweet.

How long did you try it? It can take a while to get into. I originally played for a couple hours and then quit for 6 months. Then I came back to it, really got the hang of it, installed a whole bunch of mods, and haven't put it down since.

no way man. cloud looking at midgar DOES own cactar....but not a moving animated cactar. :D
Will you people stop it? It's "cactuar", yo. Or, in some instances, Qactuar.

Ok shinra, your just spamming now, all posts deleted, dont do it again.

Morrowind beats all of them hands down....

why would any of you be playing an rpg while you could be beating hl2 for the 15th time??

I played Might and Magic 4 for my Apple IIe, does that count? I played about half of KOTOR and couldn't take it anymore. RPGs aren't my thing.

You aparently havnt played morrowind or bloodlines my friend!
