Best Sound in a Game

I agree with a few that have already been said, but to add something new:

Icewind Dale II... music, ambiance, magic affects, voice... everything is great. I like how even magic missile has a nice oomph to it. :P

I forgot about Hitman sounds. I love it in "Death of a Showman" when you let the gangster light the lawyer on fire. His screams of agonizing pain are truly some of the modern marvels of today's game sounds. I like the sounds of most of the guns too.

The best sound in any game, is the sound of your foe dying, your boot crushing the hated enemy and burning everything down.

He's Numbers. It's what he does.

heh - "My favorite sound is x game".

If I had to pick a single sound, it'd be one of the five ambient ship creaks from Alien v. Predator II (#4 I think). For halloween one year, I made a compilation of ambient sounds from Quake II, AVPII, Half Life, etc., and made a long creepy 'song', and would play it super loud, so any kids that happened to come down the road would hear it before they got to the house. When that particular sound came on, you'd check the house for large cracks.

An addition to the list :

INSURGENCY!

Has hands-down the best modern weapon sounds ever.

Forgotten Hope mod for BF1942, great gun sounds, I liked the loading music, and I also liked the tank canon sounds (especially the tiger tank sounds).

I also loved the Half-Life 1, Half-Life 2, and Half-Life 2: Episode 1's sounds in general. You gotta love the weapon sounds of HL1, the sound fromswinging the crowbar around was so ****ing satisfying, especially against the Zombie (I love the old HL1 Zombie noises). Loved the Half-Life 2 and Episode 2 sounds, the Combine overwatch muffling radio voice sounds were very cool, especially the Metro cops. Other sounds in Half-Life 2/HL2: EP2 were the ambient sounds like the Citadels sounds (you can hear crys of pain, probably Stalkers), those Alarm sounds, the Strider sounds, and the ambient fighting sounds in Anti-Citizen.

Half-Life 2 and Episode One for great use of ambient and subtle use of sound. If you stop during the street war chapters and listen you can hear fighting in the distance. Also the great Overwatch announcements, Grigori's ranting, Breencasts and zombie (especially Zombine) sounds.

Darwinia because every time I heard a Darwinian dieing I felt a pang of sorrow.

DEFCOM. You're about to launch 7 nukes at your enemy when you suddenly hear a woman crying and a baby coughing. Makes you hover your finger over the button for a moment...but only for a moment. (Damn you Introversion and your feeling-provoking audio!)

Company of Heroes. The damn voice acting is great. When you order a unit you can tell just from listening to it what kind of situation it's in. Also, the first time I heard a 105 battery hitting the ground I almost fell off my seat. I had never heard anything so bloody powerful in a computer game and I still haven't heard anything like it since.

M M M M MONSTER KILL!

I think CoD, Medal of Honour, Golden Eye (kickass guns and music) are on my list. Defcon was cool too but I didn't play it much.

I cannot express how great the sound of a 105 battery in Company of Heroes is. When you hear that sound, you know that something, somewhere is being utterly annihilated.

I'd like to add another mod...

Infiltration for UT99.
Everything sounds so awesome, it's up there with Insurgency for modern weapon sounds.

Wow...I'd have to agree with xlucidx:

Found a video of the first ten minutes of Myst IV.

If my memory serves me right, the Resident Evil Remake had some great sounds... or just sounds for everything. Walking on wood, on carpet, on wood with blood, on carpet with blood, on concrete with blood..

I don't think anyone has mentioned Ico yet, amirite? The sound for that game is sheer awesome; the wind gusting when you're on vertiginous ledges, birds tweeting, torches crackling in their brackets - and all with hardly a speck of music to be found. The sound for that game did so much in terms of immersion for me. One time I played it until 3am and fell asleep with the controller beside me, and the sound of the rushing wind at the place where I'd stopped kept entering my dreams.

I've also always loved the sound for all the Black Isle Infinity engine games like Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape. For Planescape it was more the music, but for the BG series I loves all the little ambient touches, like the sound of bustle and trade in towns, the rustle of your chain mail as you walk, and how your footsteps changed depending on the surface - which sounds elementary, but it's something that you can really appreciate when you're walking a cobbled path through some forest and you get a nice mix of grassy footsteps mixed with louder little 'clop, clop' sounds whenever you walk over the cobbles.

And finally the obligatory shout for HL2 & Ep1.
