For me:

Underworld-Born Slippy at the end of Trainspotting.

Beetoven's 9th at the end of Clockwork Orange

Roy Orbison- In Dreams in the brothel scene of Blue Velvet

and Save Me by Aimee Mann at the end of Magnolia.

Agreed.

"Tommib" by Squarepusher in Lost in Translation, where the girl is looking over the cityscape from her hotel room.

"The Pink Room" theme wich was used in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me in the seedy club scene.

While not really a good movie, I thought the opening credits to "Spawn" were great, mostly because of the wonderful "Satan" by Orbital. All it was missing was the kickass intro to that song. :(

Should I watch Fire Walk With Me if I haven't seen season 2 of Twin Peaks yet?

And where do you live in NC, out of wonder?

Street Hassle/Waltzing Matilda/Slipaway by Lou Reed at the end of The Squid and the Whale
Good Times by Jim O'Rourke at the end of Love Liza

Ah, yeah, that was a good one too.

You actually witness the murder of Laura Palmer, so you might want to hold off if you haven't seen Season 2 yet. But after a certain point in Season 2, you can watch it. The show starts going willy nilly all over the place because the execs forced Lynch to disclose the killer's identity and they lost all their direction.
Be warned. It's very different from the show. A lot less light-hearted, a lot more grim, and a lot more bizarre. Anything that was only hinted or talked about in the series, but was restricted for censorship reasons, is pretty much laid bare in the movie.

As for my location: 'Tis Raleigh.

Yeah, so I've heard. I can't find Season 2 anywhere, though.

And yeah, Raleigh veteran here, too :\

I acquired Season 2 through... *ahem* alternative online means. >_>

I'm guessing you don't mean Ebay ;).

Where are you at school in Raleigh? NC State by any chance?

I was at NC State. After a year I decided I hated it so now I'm exploring other options.

I'm still waiting for them to release the damn Season 2 boxset. Hopefully with the pilot episode intact.

I'm sure you can find dubs of it on Ebay somewhere...

I saw Fire Walk With Me without ever watching the show. I was a bit lost but I enjoyed it anyway.

As far as the best use of music, I would say 2001 ... actually Kubrick uses music well in all of his movies. Tarantino also has a knack for putting music to great use in his movies (Stuck in the Middle with You in the ear cutting scene).

The Robocop song in Robocop. Dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun.

Why it wasn't used in the sequel i'll never know.

I just said UNC-CH because I might be going there.

I want to go to a private college in Florida for a photojournalism degree.

But yeah, I'm looking into UNC-CH too for the journalism basis.

Loved the music in Vanilla Sky in most of the scenes.

This owns all - The Good the Bad and the Ugly

5 minutes of nothing but the music.

Fight Club - at the very end with "The Pixies - Where is my Mind?"

The Big Lebowski - the dream squences with "Bob Dylan - Man in Me".

Magnolia - When they're all miming the words to some female singer.

I would have to say Blues Brothers, or the end music of erin brockovitch : sheryl crow every day is a winding road

also jesus quintana's first scne in the big lebowski with the mexican version of hotel california :D

I think Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has one of the best soundtracks of all time, and the songs come on in perfect ways at perfect times in the film.

Explosions in the Sky throughout Friday Night Lights. i'll think of some others.

Via con me (by Paolo Conte) in Mostly Martha. it's esoteric, but it's wonderful.

Yahn Bernier's soundtrack to Amelie. some of those piano pieces are gems.

Gattaca themesong.

Reservoir Dogs. I don't even need to name the song.

I can't believe I forgot Donnie Darko. As overrated as the movie is, it has some of the best songs of the 80s playing perfectly in the movie. The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen in the beginning, Head Over Heels by Tears for Fears when he arrives at school, Notorious by Duran Duran at the school talent show, Under the Milky Way by The Church at the house party, and Gary Jules and Michael Andrews' cover of Mad World by Tears for Fears at the end.

It was all incredibly perfect.

Hopefully some of you have heard of Cache(Hidden), a little-known French film that released a little while back. I mention it in this category because I think its use of music was more effective than anything anyone has mentioned heretofore--it doesn't have ANY and its absolutely brilliant.

"Singing in the Rain" in Clockwork Orange does it for me.
