What in your opinion is the best video editing software and why? I'm making a gangster movie this summer, so I need something which will allow me to insert muzzle flashes, as well as text, and various images and text that will look like a news report.

Well, I've used several different programs, such as Final Cut Pro (mac only), Adobe Premiere (pro and elements), Sony Vegas (not the full one, the consumer version) and I've used Avid's free version. I personally like Premiere (pro, though for most things, elements will do) because it does essentially everything Final Cut pro does, only on Windows and with real time rendering (none of that "render preview" garbage). I hear that the full pro Sony Vegas is quite impressive though. Btw, are you editing on a Mac or PC? If you're looking for cheap stuff, i'd recomend Premiere Elements 2.0 (make sure it's 2.0). It'll run you about $120 CAD (which isn't much cheaper in the US). For the newspaper effect, a photo editor would be much more usefull, so like photoshop or whatever.

pinnacle is a favorite but are you planning to buy one or just look for a free one?

Adobe Premier Pro 2 is really good, loads of features and settings. I love it. Less visual WYSIWYG than Pinnacle or Final Cut Pro but alot more advanced features, which come in handy!

Thanks,
Torrents... oh urgh, I mean Mutley.

I use Vegas. While simple and relatively easy to use, it has a lot of advanced features. I love it.

I use premiere for my film projects. While I can see it has some shortcomings, I'll admit I'm too lazy to start using another program atm.

i wouldnt sudgest pinnacle, its been a crashing pos since version 8

if you have a Mac, Final Cut Pro is the way to go

I'm on a PC, and would prefer something good and free, but with bittorrent, my software budget is potentially infinite so if it's not free, I'd like the very best...

Based on the responses, Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 (the newest version) seems to be the winner. Though it looks like you'd have to go with the sketchy route...:|

I'll check that out. Thanks a lot guys. I'll probably post the trailer here when I get that done.
