Beta Map Effect On Processor

As soon as I noticed the quality of texture reflections, the realistic gibbing of destroyed objects (including the realistic physics of gibbed "giblets") and excellent particle effects of gunshot decals, I knew that a "lobby" map must be made for HL2DM ala the Matrix movie. When I saw that a map named "HL2Lobby" or something similar was made, I loaded it with joy.

This thread isn't about slamming the creator of the map, as there were many good things implemented, but I do not know if he or she is planning on doing more.

Here's my question to some veteran map makers (like myself).

To those pour souls not familiar:
Matrix Lobby

What I desire to do is create a map with "tiles" of marble that are reflective, but also destroyable with a few shots from a gun, but do not take damage from a grenade as I know a grenade sending chunks of marble flying would probably slow down the game too much.

I am not familiar with creating objects that do not take explosive damage, and would this count for objects thrown via grav gun?

Now, I want some feedback here as to what would be the most viable, yet still visually stunning.

Ideally, I would like to create each panel (as visible in the pic) of marble to be non-removable by grav-gun, but would take X number of damage via firearms only, then break and fall to the floor in a realistic manner. Then, these chunks would become grav-gun manipulatable and still yet, be able to be broken into smaller gibs, like a toilet or sink. Also, I would like to see these chunks blown around by explosions, etc.

My question now falls as to if I should create this map, would the average server be able to deal with the INCREDIBLE load this would put on it? I imagine each wall-hung panel cracking into 3 or 4 large flat panels that would not simply disappear.

In my old mapping experience, visual polygons and splining vertices were usually my main concern, but now I have to deal with a physics load on the processor, so someone with more experience, please, shed some light!

Well it would be laggy and slow.. but if you made the tiles client side then its down to the users PC if they can handle it.. though you'll be best coming up with some other method of doing what you want as it'll probably kill it.

I don't think that you guys are giving the engine the credit it disserves. I think that this would be completely do-able. Except for your ideas about grenades and G-Gun not doing damage to the tiles... I don't think you could do that without some sort of code manipulation. And you really only have to make the tiles that are near ground level breakable, rather than going all the way to the roof. I think that the only real problem might be if the gibs also have reflections(specular mapping or normal mapping.. or whatever the heck it is) as well. That would probably slow it down quite a bit. But other than that, I would make it. Sure, a few people out there with slower computers and dial-up may not be able to play it, but if they are playing HL2, I'm sure their comps aren't that bad. I think it would be awesome if you made it! :bounce:

maby just particle sprites simulating braking tiles and just use damage decals. to show the holes or shot off tiles on the walls

I give the engine plenty of credit from here in realityland where I don't think its capable of doing _everything_ can do it with tricks, but what he was suggesting would kill it.
