Beta Version of Updated Steam Interface

The browse games is really nice, it takes a min' or two to get used it, but when you do, it's much much better.

I mocked this up, I like this look. Just cust and pasted from the steampowered website, plus the beta screens.

In the Source engine section, you have all the sdk + documentation links et cetera.

And in the Valve Store section have links to packages plus individual titles plus merch + plus mods + third party titles somehow affiliated with either steam and/or the source engine.

I like it..

I think it would be cool if they kinda had the 'My Games' list sorta like the AIM buddy list, where you can make groups, and add them to groups.. and If you double click the group name, it will minimize the group name... So then you can make a group called 'Source Games' or a group called 'random mods' or whatever.

Btw, you can buy any and every game as in individual. No more hassle of having to buy a package deal to play your favorite game.

Lol, and Chirs, I had a whole .doc file ready to be copied & pasted for this news. :p

Hrmm...still needs some changes, but it's all good, even if it is ugly :x

Oh do be quiet unless you have something constructive (EDIT: and/or intelligent) to say.
I would go into detail but I doubt you'd understand. So I'll try and keep it simple.
The first screenshot shows us a huge list with games just thrown in. From what I see, there's no option to group your games according to their genre, size, use etc. They need to be grouped for quicker navigation and aesthetics.

Secondly, the icons are too large and look too rounded, plus they do not stand out. Unless there is a 'light-up' animation when you mouse-over them, I doubt many people would notice them, as they would be distracted from the well lit, and contrasting imagery above.

Lastly, the filters options screen is just not technically impressive.

As can be seen, the filter menus all have the same 'inner shadow' and 'bevelled' look. These need to be toned down to look any good and still add to the cartoony and childish genre the entire layout puts across.

Now, Chris_D, I am personally offended by how you proclaim that my input is not constructive, and to label me not intelligent for having my views is unacceptable. All feedback is good feedback, but you seem to be on the defensive side of this new UI layout. Why? I do not know, but you should take an unbiased look at the layout and not feel that because something is new, doesn't necessarily mean it's better.
Good day.

Niicely put. Couldn't have said it better myself. One thing I'm really worried about is the inability to create custom skins :(

Yup, cartoonyness and bad layoutness has ruined it for me too...

Good day. Hmph.

Heavens you have a few more clicks!

What's wrong with a comical look? Most GUIs for things like MSN messenger, yahoo, icq etc are all taking that visual approach with their guis.

I don't really have a problem with it.

design doesn't bother me too much.

the only thing that has bugged me is why they haven't put games into categories yet.

I figured they'd do this when half-life 2 came out, but they didn't, so it's just one huge cluster**** of games.

Put all the HL2 games together, HL1 games together, SIN games together (when released) and another category for each of the other games. Create a drop down menu to show all games in that category (eg. half-life 2 category shows, HL2, DOD:S, CS, HL2:D, HL2:LC) and one for Half-life and so on.

also, i would like to see their mods corresponding to the game that they're actually modded for. Slap Sven coop and NS into the HL category, etc.

I'm one of the lucky few who've never really had any problems with steam since the beta, and back then it was on 56k for me.

Previously it was bland but functional, but somehow they've managed to make it bland, ugly, and slightly more functional!

It's a beauty to behold...

It's a beta....

Im not even going to reply to the rest of your things. You see I've actually used it and see how it feels not just by a picture. Compared to the old GUI it looks alot better. It could look better yes, but hey get over it nothings perfect. Overall I like how it looks in every aspect.

Well it's an improvement. Saying that they really need to include a more windows like skin. The grey/green is fine but it really doesnt fit in with most other apps and I would prefer something a tad "cleaner". The black boarder at the bottom is too large too.

I also noticed if you right click the colums to disable them the tick doesnt get removed as the colums do. Might submitt that if it hasnt already been.

I've had access to it all day, almost gloating at the fact that I've had the new Steam user interface on my computer while you've all been using the traditional skin. Here I was, waiting for confirmation to be allowed to amaze you all with an exclusive preview of the Steam UI and what happens? It gets leaked before I was given permission... typical!
That's what you get when you gloat. ^_^

On the other hand, I see no fundamental difference in the server handling, which I guess is a good hand. It's seriously quite cosmetic (ooh, more bumps then?) with perhaps the "play games" list the only good, and needed, change.
I like them having a link for the developers as well.

I also like MjM's mock.

Some people will hate steam no matter what, just because there ignorant....

If by no matter what u mean we hate buggy system hogging programs with unusable friends list, then i guess i must be ignorant (thats what u call people who don't agree with you right).

Its been years and they still can't make a friends list work.

Valve come on you can do better than that.

It seems like an improvement but the main thing they missed: being able to hide games.
It's like an eternal advertising for all those games I will never buy. In fact this looks like a commercial driven update with very little flexibility for us, but much more flexibility for them.

It looks a bit better, but an improvement...... not sure.

Monk.

I was really hoping for some user-defined sorting in the mini list, it's still a mess in that department. Lost Coast isn't even in it's own "Coming Soon" category anymore, it's just tossed in the "Installed" list; couldn't make less sense. Still can't even add launch options to 3rd party games, which works just fine via desktop shortcuts. I still don't like their decision to replicate things like the server browser that are accessible in-game, it's just so much more resource leeching. Not a lot of positives here sadly, even on the cosmetic end; I want my clean grey skin back, you're clashing with my desktop.

Oh well, just have to grudgingly accept it, keep it minimized & continue using my desktop shortcuts.

is this "available-for-all" betaUI a work in progress or simply a snapshot of steam v3 developement from some time ago?

In my world function>form, so this update is completely useless.
I certainly hope they throw something real into the finished upgrade.

.bog.

still no option to remove games from the list ..? jeez
games i am never gonna play are just in the list sitting there, and as the list grows it's gonna get more annoying :/

For some reason it's not working for me. I add the -clientbeta betaui to my shortcut but when it starts up to says steam is updating but stays at 0% and closes down after like a minute without another word. Any help?

Its an improvement but nothing really more than that. I'm not liking the huge shadow and borders round the buttons - seem a bit out of place

They are doing a full friends list code rewrite. What bugs? And well I will say at times it does seem to take to many resources but overall if you have a decent system it wont really affect you to much.

Im sure for the final release they will change the Games\Play menu. Im sure in time they will add more originization which is the only thing that I really see isn't half bad.

Hehe, I'm getting an impression that some people here want the command line as the only interface for Steam, just to look more l33t.

/me builds a schoolhouse :D

I think the new layout is a grower. I like the update status being easily viewed for every game.

I agree 100% -- visuals are nice (how can you not like the beveled edges and depth on the buttons compared to plain square buttons from early 90's!), but put those resources towards fixing some of the nagging issues...

I really hope they will fix the Friends list with this update.

Absolutely horrible. Just.... horrible. Don't get me wrong, I love Valve/Steam as much as the next guy, but this is just terrible.

I do this for a living (user interface design) and let met tell you, this is definately a step down from the current interface. I really would have expected more from valve on this. I seriously hope that this was just a "beta" and that we'll see much better results when it is released.

The only thing I can figure is that valve is catering to the majority, the 13 year old user majority.

I love what someone already said about... "they managed to take something that was dull, but functional, and turn it into something that is dull, ugly, and slightly more function" ..... my sentiments exactly!

Definitely not what I expected. And it's ugly.

I like it. It seems sleeker and better laid out, and the new look I find attractive. I'm also happy that the only games that show up in the "My Games" window are games that I actually own.

Overall, a welcome change.

Oh god... no...

Everyone who has used Photoshop know the term 'filtertastic'. Guess what I think the new Steam Interface is?

I don't use Steam very often, I just use it to launch HL2 once in a while. This is a big step backwards. The new interface is big, bulky and ugly. If the old design was 90's, this one's from the 50's...

I really hope the new interface will be skinnable, and maybe even somewhat programmable, so that we can choose how it looks.

[EDIT]

Can't say it better then this...
"If you do things right, people won't know you've done anything at all..." - Futurama

I've seen Chinchilla excretions with more style.

I like it, however I agree you should be able to put your games into groups.

I hope that will follow in the standard release.. it would be nice to group games by usage, type and class (SP/MP etc.) - at the users discretion.

It would also be nice to see the SDK tools (Hammer, Face Poser etc.) right there on the main option screen, instead of having to click "Source SDK" and let it load up..

I don't understand why people keep criticizing it as "bulky". You can collapse the window down to something no larger than the current "My Games" menu.
