So, what are all your views on the spyware included in BF2142, and does anyone know how to remove it?

Stop downloading random shit on the internet, noob.

software that monitors your computer = spyware
so yes BF2142 ships with it but ...

No, hidden software that gathers information off your computer = spyware. It's not hidden, you are clearly told it's there, and it only looks at your IP address and which ingame billboards you look at and how long you look at them. At most it's just adware.

after the disaster that was BF2 support and then the decisions made with BF2142, it would take something very special for me to buy another DICE game
browse tbf2142.com - I remember when the game was released there was a HUGE thread with a clever way of blocking the ports that the ad programme used so it could neither upload collected data nor place ads ingame. whether EA have cracked down since I dunno, I don't play

Thanks for a decent response.

Im not too worried, but apparently it takes up alot of bandwith. Does that really affect the gameplay much? (considering I get like 54 - 100 Mbps through my wireless, I need every little bit).

Ok, you officially make no sence.
Firstly, it uses almost no bandwidth, other than to download the ads at the start of the map. The server knows where you are looking all the time anyway, so no extra bandwidth is used to tell it that.

Second, if many players get along fine with 1Mbps, why the **** do you even care on 54-100Mbps???

54mb-100mb isnt your actual bandwidth. its just what your wireless card can transfer.thats one expensive bill for a connection that fast.

My signal strength is very low, so I dont really get the speed of a 54mbps connection.

Im supposed to get 100mbps, but the wireless is only giving me 54.

I've read that it takes up bandwith in various forums, obviously they're wrong.

It does take up bandwidth, but only talking about a couple kb at most...but still, out of principle, I refuse to buy another DICE game...

I bet he's talking about 54kb, and not mb. If it is, then yeah, it's just your speed. My speed is only 12mb/s. Which is decent. Nuff to play counter-strike or TFC without much lag. [on my laptop]. 54k is horrible, and that's dial-up. Never trust a company that tells you that dial-up can be faster.. cause it can't. It will just kill you while you sleep.

12mbs??? ok for a game..........thats more then enough for a game lol

to play a game with decent ping will require about 512kb-1mb

12mbs is like 1.5mbs download speed

I get 214kb/s download at its best.

Might upgrade to the powercable internet soon.

I doubt it. Any wireless connection weak enough to be that slow would drop constantly. I suspect hes looking for reasons to bash the ad ware in 2142 because its fashinable to bash EA. (Which is fair because they suck, but there are much worse things about both EA and 2142)

Well, it's adware with a twist of spyware, and that's why the Australian version of the game does not contain it since it - Illegal under the Australian Spyware Act.

No, seriously, its not (spyware, not saying not illegal in AUS). Now don't get me wrong, I have no love for EA. But, there is no spyware in it. It is a built in mecanism for showing adverts on the boards and reporting back how long people look at them for. Thay announced this before the game was released.

In order to be spyware, it has to install without your knowledge. It dosen't, therefore not spyware, only adware.

And no one go 'INGAME ADVERTS SUCK' because, ffs, no one cares! It's just a damn billboard! You should be shooting people, not looking at ads! It really isn't all that bad. Now, if they made you drink a pepsi every time you died...

Btw, my 12mbs isn't all that great. Since it's wireless, only about 500kb of that gets through. BTW, on my gaming PC, I get 600kb/s best download time. On my laptop? Only about 100.

500kbs is more than half of what you would need to stream a full quality DVD ffs, anyone getting this has no damn reason to worry about any games bandwidth

The computer illiteracy is strong in this thread. 54Mb is a standard wireless connection, and yes, it's fast, just not as fast as LAN which is usually 100Mb
However, it's usually limited by the speed of your actual internet connection, which rarely is faster than 10 or 12Mb.
