Bioshock Infinite is going to be great, makes a change now from Rapture.

I agree. Bioshock is a frustrating game for me because it comes so close to being brilliant, but it never actually breaks out of the typical FPS structure. It genuinely does the game more harm than good; for all the detail and work that's been put into them, the whole point of these games should be the environments you encounter and the ecosystems they contain. Most of the areas of Rapture just blend together in my head because the gameplay never forces you to consider the environment as anything more than a series of corridors along which you proceed in order to shoot some dudes; there is never a genuine opportunity to appreciate the complexity of the city, and you're never forced to treat it as if it were a real space rather than a video game space.

Take Metal Gear Solid for example, there's a ****ing game in which you interact with spaces in a meaningful way. I could probably draw a map of the entire area you cover in that game off the top of my head, and I haven't even played it that many times. Because each space in that game has to be used tactically and because each area has a ludological purpose beyond just being a holding tank for some dudes to shoot, you end up having a working knowledge of an environment and you make it your own. Imagine playing a Bioshock in which the splicers could **** you up a lot more, and you were forced to use environments strategically rather than running straight through them. You'd have to consider each room for places to hole up with turrets and grenades, or find good hiding spots throughout each floor for when things turned ugly. There would be a great incentive to learn the layout of the city and engage with it in a meaningful way, which would allow time to appreciate the intricacies of Rapture or Columbia while rewarding you through gameplay. As it is, they're just making these elaborate spaces and using them as little more than backdrops. It's such a waste!
I agree. It would've bee pretty sweet if you could bust up the water tunnels yourself to block a horde of splicers. I waited at the scene at the very beginning of the game where the plane crashed into the tunnels to see if it would eventually collapse completely and was disappointed when it didn't. Even that scene was purely scripted too though.

And what's with all the Bioshock hate? I loved the first one. It had its flaws but every game does.

The first one was promoted as being a "successor" to the System Shock series. Anyone who played those games enjoyed Bioshock, but still felt cheated by how simple it was compared to the prior games.

While Bioshock had some really good graphics and did some really cool things with the Unreal engine, the combat was a bit lacking. Plasmids were neat, but once you found one you liked there was no reason to switch off of it, ever. And then it just became the same thing over and over. The atmosphere of Rapture was fantastic, though lacked real interaction, and the story itself set up something that it didn't deliver on.

Ryan calls you a slave, and instead of breaking free of the paradigm and making decisions for yourself, which would have been a really cool touch, you do what you've done for the entire game and follow the very next person who tells you what to do. I was pretty letdown by it.

The ending was also pretty weak. Being told that "Once you become a bit daddy, there's no going back" and then having the end cutscene completely negate that was a really lousy touch. I also hated the entire big daddy sequence, which could not have been more clunky.

I didn't even play the sequel because the idea of being a Big Daddy again was so unappealing to me.

A few posts back, Dr.Demento quotes a post by Toaster Leigh that makes some really good points as well. Bioshock wasn't a bad game, but it came so close to being something truly amazing that the flaws stick out that much more.

That said, after seeing the gameplay video, I am tentatively excited for Infinite, even though about 80% does look to be more of the same.

And yet another System Shock vs. Bioshock discussion is on the way. zzzzzzz

There's no need for a discussion. Bioshock is a travesty of the gaming industry.

for god sake we bumped this thread to have another BS vs SS rant :dozey:

I know right?? I came in here expecting a new gameplay trailer or some new features not listed before. UGH

Guaranteed nothing is coming until E3, they blew the story too early, now I expect them to actually spend the two years left making something fresh in an open world sort of way.

No ones talking about this so I decided to bust open the ss2 scab

Lets keep bumping this thread so more people think there is some serious news discussion on Bioshock Infinite.

I will just take this bumped opportunity to state that I love Bioshock and can't wait for Infinite. That is all.

It looks like EXACTLY the same game, I mean holy crap even Dead Space has an inventory system and it greatly enhanced the enjoyment I got out of it. This time all they are ****ing talking about is the stupid setting and xenophobia blah blah blah. They might as well scream thats its the same damn 4 fights endlessly respawning again

Am I the only one who's not judging the similarities just yet? Until the game is actually finished, we don't know the specifics on how different it's going to be.

Sure there are going to be things that are the same, otherwise it wouldn't be a Bioshock game, just like Halo, C.O.D and dare I say it, Half-Life all have a vast array of things that are the same as the previous installments in their games.

The main point in case is that there'll be a whole different story and setting to be immersed in, as well as the mechanism for the scarier side of the gameplay having to be completely changed being as it's no longer underwater, it's in the sky, thus they've made mention of using the light to mess with you rather than the dark.

It's not exactly Dynasty Warriors.
