I agree. It would've bee pretty sweet if you could bust up the water tunnels yourself to block a horde of splicers. I waited at the scene at the very beginning of the game where the plane crashed into the tunnels to see if it would eventually collapse completely and was disappointed when it didn't. Even that scene was purely scripted too though.I agree. Bioshock is a frustrating game for me because it comes so close to being brilliant, but it never actually breaks out of the typical FPS structure. It genuinely does the game more harm than good; for all the detail and work that's been put into them, the whole point of these games should be the environments you encounter and the ecosystems they contain. Most of the areas of Rapture just blend together in my head because the gameplay never forces you to consider the environment as anything more than a series of corridors along which you proceed in order to shoot some dudes; there is never a genuine opportunity to appreciate the complexity of the city, and you're never forced to treat it as if it were a real space rather than a video game space.
Take Metal Gear Solid for example, there's a ****ing game in which you interact with spaces in a meaningful way. I could probably draw a map of the entire area you cover in that game off the top of my head, and I haven't even played it that many times. Because each space in that game has to be used tactically and because each area has a ludological purpose beyond just being a holding tank for some dudes to shoot, you end up having a working knowledge of an environment and you make it your own. Imagine playing a Bioshock in which the splicers could **** you up a lot more, and you were forced to use environments strategically rather than running straight through them. You'd have to consider each room for places to hole up with turrets and grenades, or find good hiding spots throughout each floor for when things turned ugly. There would be a great incentive to learn the layout of the city and engage with it in a meaningful way, which would allow time to appreciate the intricacies of Rapture or Columbia while rewarding you through gameplay. As it is, they're just making these elaborate spaces and using them as little more than backdrops. It's such a waste!
Bioshock Infinite is going to be great, makes a change now from Rapture.
Keep telling yourself that, I see leadhead splicer, enrage, thuggish splicer and lightning. What a wonderful change
You bumped a thread from several months ago for that?
And what's with all the Bioshock hate? I loved the first one. It had its flaws but every game does.
for god sake we bumped this thread to have another BS vs SS rant :dozey:
I know right?? I came in here expecting a new gameplay trailer or some new features not listed before. UGH
There's no need for a discussion. Bioshock is a travesty of the gaming industry.
Keep crying bitch
And yet another System Shock vs. Bioshock discussion is on the way. zzzzzzz
