Bioshock world premiere video tonight on IGN

Thanks for the vid :)

Gameplay has some neat things in it, and the water looks amazing. :)

THIS IS going to KIK assssssssssssssss

bring on the PCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC VERSION :)

On the whole, motion is probably one of only two negative things I can say about this game... mind you, motion problems have a rather devestating effect on how much you enjoy a game, or so I feel anyway. For instance, Halo which always felt far too floaty. Same with Unreal 2. I hope they fix it.

Also, I hope they make the interface more like System Shock 2 for the PC version. The current (360) version is something like Deus Ex: Invisible War. Fine for consoles, but it entirely cuts the PC's mouse functionality out.

I think the floatyness in games is generally caused by not having the weapon bob right for the speed you're moving. Unless you're talking about jumping, but I don't recall seeing him jump in the Bioshock vid. Slow games usually seem pretty floaty. Fortunately Bioshock probably only starts out as a slow game. If it's anything like SS2, you're pretty slow at the beginning but you can upgrade your agility skill. I remember zooming around the Body of the Many like a maniac.

btw, that's just the 360 interface. The PC interface will be mouse driven:

Ken Levine said:
Frankly, I think that, whether you look at something like Half-Life or Halo, or even Oblivion, there are ways to do good interfaces that have 70 percent of their functionality work across both [PCs and consoles]. However, you do see certain games making mistakes, like not supporting the use of a mouse. Our interface will support the mouse fully and be a mouse-driven game, because who wants to play a PC game that doesn't do that?

Haha that's rich, Crysis better than Bioshock.

Bioshock features so much that is different to every other generic fps shooter. Mainly your free to do as you wish, you can fiddle with practicly everything in the game, awesome AI relationships and all manner of other cool things. A few people have said it looks slow, maybe becuase they're demonstrating the game in a 15 minute trailer. Your free to play it as you wish, that doesn't mean you'll live long.

Excuse me dickhead but saying that Crysis IMO impresses me more than Bioshock, in no way shape or form means that I said OMFG CRYSIS WILL OWN BIOSHOCK OMFG!!!11!!

I'm still trying to get over your "not too original" comment. This is one of the most original FPS concepts ever.

Sluggish framerate, I hope they can optimize it better before release. Other than though it looks pretty damn amazing. The water looks fantastic, and I would go so far and say that it looks better than Half-Life 2.

Indeed. Oblivion struggled on the 360 in places too, and this looks to be much more demanding than that, so it will certainly be a chore getting a good solid fps out of it. That said, they have a while to go before release, so they should be able to optimize nicely. They're pros after all....

Ok well maybe I shouldnt have used the term original. I just could swear that several of the things that he pointed out in the video like the AI that has its own tasks Ive seen/played before in another game. Also the opend ended gameplay Ive heard companys talk the talk but it never ends up being anything special. I dont know maybe Im just jaded because the past 5 years it seems like these games promise all this great stuff but then when it comes time to actually playing the game they never seem to deliver. But dont get me wrong Im a gamer and I hope every game is ThE OMFG SHITTT!!!11! Bioschock included but for now like I said before Crysis just has my nipples the hardest!

I don't get exited easly about most games, infact I hardly ever post in thease kinds of threads. But that just looks amazing on so many levels.
Shame it's probably going to flop because almost every game that has a hint of originality and wierdness flops, certainly the most brilliant ones do.

Thats cool, it also reminds me of thief in a certain way, but perhaps thats just the lighting. Anyway me likey lots :).

Not really impressed. Looks pretty generic. And the graphics aren't all that good apart from the water. The models in particular are terrible. They all look like they're wrapped in cling film.

Real people have natural leathery skin and material clothes. Not baby-oil skin and plastic clothing. In this respect, Half Life 2 looks better than this.
I'd say it'll be one of those games that everyone buys and is then supremely unimpressed. Like FEAR. Except for some reason people seemed to like that.

If I said that, "they" would have bashed me to death (been bashed already once....)

I agree with your comments.

I'll probably get killed to death too. But that's the wonders of the internet. You can state your views and there isn't much people can do.

It's not like anyone's right. None of us have played the game.

But, in my own opinion, it looks amazing and I can't wait to play it.

No one's bashing you guys, and EEngi, no one bashed you. All people said was that there's probably going to be more than 4 characters in the whole game. That GTFO pic I posted was just a joke, dayummmmmmmmmm!

None of us have played the game.

True dat. And it was a console version.

Considering I'm not a graphics whore, my comments were a little harsh. It's always gameplay over graphics. So obviously if it turns out to be gameplay of the century, of course I'll play it.
Only, turning enemies on each other isn't exactly as new as they claim. Nor is designing your character and weapons how you want. Nor is a large free roaming fantasy world. Hence, Crysis does more to impress me, because it looks more fun.

EDIT: I'm not just being an ass. I was more excited for the game before this video than I am now. In fact, I was more excited than I was for most games. This video just lowered all my expectations.

Everything except the skins on organics looked great imo. I wish they had shown more RPG elements than just switching whatever power-ups you have equipped, I hope there is more than that.

It doesn't seem like it's terribly scare-oriented, at least in that section. Especially since the big watersuit fellows don't attack you unprovoked. Which is a good thing for wusses like me, I might be able to actually play this game for long periods of time...

Also: While loads are you of looking at this thread, has anyone heard of any multiplayer for Bioshock? Perhaps even a patched-in one like SS2

YES! Thank you thats sums up what I was originally trying to get across. Reginald your my new best intranet friend haha!

I want to know how long and how large the environments will be. I hope you're not confined to a few small coridoors/shops until you move on to the next "stage".

The prospect of extremely non-linear exploration alone is enough to make me excited. I really like the art direction so far, as well. Though the interface looks a little complex, but that could just be me.

The water effects are amazing, with it perpetually leaking in; this really gives the world a sense of impending doom. I just hope the story lives up to the same standards as the rest of the development.

I like the touch of the insane musician trapping you in the level, also. This has the potential to be a great game, it's all the little touches that make a game fantastic and BioShock seems to have those in abundance.

If you cut what Bioshock is attempting into chunks it doesn't sound that impressive. Other games have had modable weapons, rpg elements, and boasted impressive AI with nonlinear emergent gameplay etc etc, but very few have done it well. System Shock 2 is one of the best examples of one that did (better than Deus Ex imo), which is why many of us are hyped for Bioshock.

As soon as the commentator mentioned the player will constantly be searching for resources, memories of hunting for ammo in SS2 came flooding back. It didn't herd you through a level or spoon feed you ammo packs, you were faced with very real problems that felt far more convincing. Not only that, you were given an almost free reign in how to solve each one. Being forced to make these decisions (virtually every game we play these days does that for you) is what made the experience that much more believable and tense (at times SS2 scared the crap out of me I was so engrossed).

Bioshock looks to expand on this idea greatly - the gameworld is more detailed and varied than System Shock's and is reported to be huge. Other than looking lush (loving the 50's jules verne look) it's filled with inhabitants going about their daily business. Being able to observe the ****ed up relationship between the Big Daddy's and Little Sister's, and whoever else happens to be lurking around, will make this place seem all the more real, while adding extra layers of complexity and choices for the player to make.

If Irrational can make you feel like you're trapped in this huge creepy place, rather than in a game that revolves around you, and the Big Daddy's and Little Sister's are real things you have to deal with, rather than AI to exploit, then Bioshock could be very special :)

I almost was willing to go along with what you were saying until I said you didn't like FEAR....I loved that game.

I finally got that video through the blasted IGN servers. This game looks phenominal, definitely one to keep my eye on. The Deus Exness is apparent, as is the genius of Irrational.

Hopefully this will kick start some Deus Ex clones! :D

I enjoyed that video quite a bit, I have really high expectations for this game.... :D that was just plain fun

Can anybody that knows more about this game explain why Rapture is in ruin?

If these were the best minds and best people of the world why are they struggling to survive and wtf happened to make this place go to shit?

EDIT: Also, how are armor piercing bullets way less effective bullets to take somebody down? Whatever...

The man behind the idea of rapture and the guy who basically designed the entire thing went completely apeshit.

I think it was something to do with ADAM. Not sure but i read it in a Gamespot Preview from way back.

People started using Adam to modify themselves and became less and less human. We don't know all the details, but I'm guessing that no matter how much people changed themselves they were never perfect, and they always wanted more. They just took it too far. It wasn't the fault of any one person, but of their society and ideology. It will probably be like SS2 where there are tons of audio logs that show us exactly how the decline happened.

Excuse me dickhead but saying that Crysis IMO impresses me more than Bioshock, in no way shape or form means that I said OMFG CRYSIS WILL OWN BIOSHOCK OMFG!!!11!!

You expressed your opinion and I expressed mine. It's not my fault if you feel insulted. What you wrote made honestly made me laugh, I'm sure you have your reasons for liking Crysis more.

In my opinion Crysis will be a big flop just like Far Cry was. Also in my opinion Bioshock stands to be more of a success due to all of the great features it boasts including how it's meant as a successor to the great System Shock. Crysis seems to boast Hype and pretty jungles.

I want to know how long and how large the environments will be. I hope you're not confined to a few small coridoors/shops until you move on to the next "stage".

Usually theres a problem you need to solve to get to the next area. However, you'll find if it's anything like System Shock played out you'll be going back and forth between various areas to achieve your tasks.

I'm hoping that Bioshock will emulate System Shock 1 rather than Shock 2 in that respect. The way the levels unlocked themselves in Shock 2 was actually pretty linear, because you HAD to go from Deck 2 to Deck 1 to Deck 3 to Deck 4. Only then could you choose to do Deck 5 before Deck 4, and then the rest of the game panned out sequentially again. Shock 1 had more decks, and was more freeform. Finding / enabling a new elevator system would usually give you access to 4 different decks at once. You could pretty much gain access to all but the highest realms of the station without completing one useful objective :p I could see why they would stop you from doing that though, since it is quite confusing to come back to the game and have to navigate your way back to the lower levels where your objectives currently are. Plus, most of the enemies on the harder decks rip the shit out of you :p
Not really impressed. Looks pretty generic.
I know it's customary to flame the hell out of you simply because you're expressing negative thoughts about a game that the majority are excited about, but still I can't help but feel that saying Bioshock is "generic" is immensely misplaced (or else, you're just the type that can't stand anything as soon as you realise that other people find it popular :p ). There is a list of games I could write on the smallest of my fingers that resembles the gameplay style of Bioshock, even less in the way of games that chose an underwater setting, or a post-war setting. I struggle to think of a single game (or movie? book?) that combines both setting elements and then puts them in a Shooter RPG. "Generic" in this context sounds most like a clever word you learned somewhere for expressing a negative reaction to something, but you don't quite understand.
The models in particular are terrible. They all look like they're wrapped in cling film.

Actually, I do agree that the human models aren't all that hot. As for that actually mattering, I disagree. The animation is great, non human models are well designed and the architecture is amazing. Even if they weren't, System Shock 2 is an acute enough example of a game whose quality shone (and still does) through its 4-poly models, blurry textures and other visual quirkyness.

No, it's not a totally new genre, and that has been emphasised by Ken Levine himself. He wants people to understand that it's an innovative FPS, but an FPS all the same.

If these were the best minds and best people of the world why are they struggling to survive and wtf happened to make this place go to shit?

It fell apart due to this feud between the two big shots. An ex-soviet who created Rapture, and the man who invented Adam.

Yah I did a long time ago but that was just cause my friend had it so I played it on his computer. I never played it for an extended amount of time or anything.

Did you finish System Shock 2?

I played it when it was released but i was so young that it scared me too much to continue playing. Then around 2003 i reinstalled it while i was waiting for Half-Life 2 to come out and beat it. ****ing amazing game, definitely one of the best i've ever played. And that was a butt ugly game when it came out as well. By 2003 it was still pretty god damn ugly to look at.

And even though i usually dont do this sorta thing, for anyone out there who thinks Crysis will be better than Bioshock, look at each company's past games, its evident which company will deliver which goods.

Crytek will deliver graphically, whereas Irrational will deliver everything else.
Far Cry was pretty but most people were divided on the gameplay. Pretty much everyone thought it was great until the trigens came in, then it became divided. Whereas everyone whose played System Shock 2 or Deus Ex know those games are ****ing phenomenal, but not entirely good-looking.

First FEAR bashing in this thread, then Far Cry?

What's going on in here?

Far Cry was a decent game, by no means a flop...You can call it bad in your opinion, but to name it a flop is just wrong.
