I don't understand them from the original half life and opposing force. So they send in the military to cover up black mesa, but for no reason they send in the black opps to kill everyone INCLUDING the military? That makes no sense, why didnt they just send the black opps in the first place so they wouldnt have to kill the military also?

I guess it was just a way for gordon to have to fight a stronger soldier, and for shepard to fight some humans in opposing force

The military screwed up its containment, so they sent in the black ops to contain and then nuke the place.

It never did make much sense IMO. The best explanation I could come up with is that the Black Ops were afraid that if the Marines found out about the Nuke they would try to stop it.

I thought they were trying to take the marines out with it as well?

Because they knew too much. But then someone would have to take out the Black Ops...

G-man fiddled with the timer on the nuke?

"How long we got? Plenty of ti-" *incinerating flash*

The BOPS only fought marines in OP4.

It's interesting how no-one that knew about the nuke is alive by HL2. Except for Breen, that is.

Well, in that case we can assume that Barney at least saw the bomb go off in the rear-view mirror while driving through the New Mexico desert.

Its sorta in the name..... Clalhoun.......Barney Colhoun. In Half Life 2,he even reminds you of the beer he promised in the first one.

Yeah... Didn't you hear him shouting when the tram passed him? Anyway it's him.

Calhoun never meets Gordon in Blue Shift, and can as such not owe Gordon a beer.

Barney and Gordon were friends before the resonance cascade occured you know. Also, interesting note: The protagonist of Blue Shift is only ever refered to as B. Calhoun, never Barney Calhoun (Which is the offical name of the character from Half-Life 2).

Also, the black ops squad killing the HECU troops doesn't make sense, Opposing Force was just badly written. Best explenations I can come up with:
  1. A unit of grunts found out about the package or something bad like that. Either they didn't want to die they decided to try and kill the black ops to save themselves or the black ops knew that the grunts had found out and attacked the grunts. Whoever attacked first, word got spread around via the radios and an all-out war broke out between the two groups.
  2. In anticipation of the above happening, the black ops were ordered to eliminate all left-over HECU troops so that they couldn't cause any problems.
  3. The black ops were sadistic bastards and wanted some target practice.
  4. Opposing Force never happened so we can forget all its sillyness.
  5. The guy in charge (The g-man?) didn't want anyone alive who might spread word of what happened, even the grunts that were evacuated were later killed or silenced somehow. The only ones seen as trustworthy were the black ops. By definition, a black ops soldier must be able to keep a secret.
  6. Shephard was gay, so they wanted to kill him.
  7. Because teh only thin kewller than a soopersecret millitry grupe of mareens is a superer secrter millitry grupe of assassinns!!!1!1111!11oneone1one111

Shephard pwns, do not call him gay!!!
If you do, I will get Lamarr to hump your head. ^___^

Which would have what effect exactly? Warm and massage my scalp a little?

Yeah.. But is it really that nice to have a headcrab humping your head??
Have you really looked inside a headcrab? Hmmm, have you?
Terrible things awaits you...

"Don't worry Gordon, she's debeaked and completely harmless!" Dr. Kleiner (the real one) speaking of Lammar

It seems fairly obvious to me that the Black Ops were sent to "remove" any soldiers who'd been left behind, kill Gordon Freeman, and eliminate Black Mesa, though only the 2nd is obvious in Half-life.

basically the marines couldnt handle the job given to them so the government had to kick it up a notch and send in the black ops

When barney says "about that beer I owed ya", valve put that in for humour, becasue the barnies in the first one said they'd buy a beer after work, i don't think it's bast on facts, or what actually happened.

Dang, the marines won the super bowl and stole all the hotdawgs from the ops, thats why they turned on the marines >.>

*singsongvoice* They weere frieeends before the incciddent!

So it's a joke and also based on ('making up') facts.

I agree with anyone who holds the opinion that the Ops on Marines conflict was an invention of Gearbox for their not terribly canonical Opposing Force.

Re: Barney, it's heavily hinted in Blue Shift that he's the guard Gordon had seen banging on the door during the original tram ride. Is that reference canonical? Does the retcon stand up to scrutiny?

On a similar note, I remember being vaguely disappointed to learn that Kleiner never appeared in Half-Life. I thought there would be some poetic justice in identifying him with the shotgun-toting scientist in the Lambda Core (visually referenced at the very end of Entaglement).

That is obvious. But what's not clear is why? What is the point of the Black Ops killing the marines? It's just poor writing.

They probably saw too much. Remember when the guy in Opposing Force says something like "Look like the brass bit of more then they could chew"? The "brass" would've been worried about a big scandal, and of course4 all the secrets at Black Mesa being revealed, though it turned out quite different from what they expected.

Don't forget Shepherd himself is silenced, by G-man. "There is still the lingering matter of witnesses", and all that.

Speaking of Opposing Force, and Silencing Shepard, I think it's interesting that the G-Man says something like "I do find an interest in people who can survive against all odds, they remind me of myself.."

-but I am sure that has been mentioned many times

Oh yes, most certainly.
