How do I blend landscapes. I've looked at MNemics tutorial and it doesn't really explain how. Ive taken a look at other maps and i still dont get it :S

Read the SDK reference doc... and the under : Displacement Surfaces (Terrain)
at the bottom you will find : Blended Displacement Materials (Alpha Channel Painting)..
I have tried but my texture gets all crazy...
tell me if it works out for ya

Aha, it works. Cheers dude. But i wonder how i can create roads etc?

Well last I heard it was using decals (You just paste them onto existing blends/textures).

Wel that depends, there are road overlays, like in the css map de_dust. (search for overlay or decal as filter in the texture browser, but don't use the decal tool to place any, the overlay tool gives more control and is there to replace the decal tool)

But you can also create paths with the " pain't Aplha" option in the displacements window.

Ok I've found it after searching for concrete. But how do i add it? If i use the decal tool, it doesnt work because its not a decal, and if i use the other one, it applys it to the whole face....

:S

you can change dimensions in the top/side views, and in the 3d view you can move their points around but the 3d view is a hassle and only usefull when u have to make a curved road or something.

Under the entity options you can change the UV scale, see the snarkpit overlays tutorial for more about that.

There are also some road textures that aren' t really decals/overlays so you can' t use those.

Use textures that have "blend" in their name. Then create displacements out of them. Next under the displacement tab choose "paint alpha" you then get a cursor that can paint the 2 colours in the blend texture preview.

Snarkpit is down, and has been for a while.
Could you give a quick explanation of how to create these curved roads please, its just what I`ve been looking for!

1) Make straight road section
2) Place another road section at the start of where your curve will go
3) Rotate it by 15 degrees
4) Adjust the scaling and alignment of the texture (in surface properties - shift+A) until it matches up with your straight section.
5) Repeat for each new curve section

Wont rotating cause gaps between the joins though?
What do you do, vertex edit each section to join it to the next?

Surely there is an easier way?

Sorry, I meant rotate the texture by 15 degrees.
Use vertex manipulation to shape each section to fit.

That is the easy way.

ahh ok that makes more sense :)

Cheers Pi, I`ll give it a go - dont spose you have a piccy of a road done this way do you? ;)

What would be the harder (Hopefully sexier?) way?

1.get out of your chair
2.pick up your digital camera
3.put on a large black cape or coat (your pasty skin may burn in the sun)
4.stand in the street (don't get hit by a car)
5.take a picture of the street (try to keep your thumb and feet out of the picture)
6.load the picture onto your computer
7.use the picture to create a texture of a road
8.create a curved road texture

Not sexier but definitely smart alecky-i-er or something.

haha, nice list :)

So what your saying is that the geometry is straght, and its the texture that creates the illusion of a bend in the road?

Surely the geometry must be right as well?

Give me half an hour, and I'll show you.

I take it the 90 degree "bend" was done with the arch tool?
Small bends are done with a lesser angle in the arch tool...

Is it possible to sew together 2 displacements that have different textures, or must they be the same?

for a road i did about the same technique, though i just made a straight section and textures and scaled to the size i wanted, then made a copy and rotated it 90 degrees but it where i want it to go.. then used arch tool to make a big turn.. used vertex editing to make the arch the same size in width to the two straight sections.. now i have a big arching curve road.. the texture was then scale and rotated as needed on the curve section..

same way, but i need a longer and more curver road then just a right hand turn.

I used basic brushes, the clip tool and the vertex tool. It's possible to make a curve as long as you like - you just use quads instead of triangles for each section.

How do you specify?
You didn`t create the traingles manually did you? ( Ipresumed your bend used the arch tool?)

I used the brush tool to make a rectangular brush, then used the clip tool to turn it into a triangle.

Brush set to arch is a quick and easy way to create a road bend.
