Hopefully this is a good place to post this, but my computer was just infected by mass amounts of adware and viruses after a visit to a not-so-friendly site from a not-so-friendly link.

It found a whole crapload of things, and came up with Bloodhound.Packet. Norton is unable to delete them, and I cannot manually delete them, says I "don't have permission" or some crap. I'm not sure what to do... there is one in Internet Optimiser, one in Windows, and one in Documents and Settings.. and probably more. I ran Adaware, and it got rid of a lot of stuff, but couldnt help me with the Bloodhound.Packet... and I'm scanning my entire hard drive right now with Norton.

And the worthless Norton program "ran out" of trial periods... so I'm not sure how good of a job its doing (you would think that a brand new computer would come with free virus protection...)

Maybe someone can help me out in how to get rid of all this crazy crap? And.. is it a huge problem, or just some adware that is easy to get rid of. I can't beleive I was so stupid... but anyway, I'd like some help. The only thing so far that has been found and can't be deleted is the Bloodhound.Packet.

Thanks.

Do you have spybot? It's my favorite adware removal program and it so easy to use.

Go to google and search Stinger. Stinger is a free virus scanner and it's really good, it'll clean the viruses. Then search for either Ad-aware, Spysweeper, or Spybot. All three are adware/spyware scanners, they'll kill the spyware. I think most people like Spybot, but Ad-aware doesn't take long to scan and I like Spysweeper.

Thanks for the replies. Its not that I can't find the files, its that I can't delete them... I've found 'em with Norton and Ad-aware... but they can't delete them. I'll try those other anti-virus programs, too.

I'm not running in safe-mode, though... will that help? And how can I get Windows to start up like that, what is it F1 or something, I forgot.

Thanks. :)

Hold F8 just after the POST until a menu comes up. Then select Safe Mode.
It should stop the spyware from loading up and so allow you to delete it. It being the spyware files :)

Ya heres, a tip avoid clicking links at all costs that are sent to you in IRC, unknown people.

Okay, well, I found out what "Bloodhound.Packed" is... just a temporary name that Norton Antivirus gives anything that isn't officially "named" or "defined" yet. Comes from the Bloodhound program that Norton uses. If anyone cares.

Spybot worked extremely well, but some of these things are still lurking on my computer and won't go away. I've got about 7 or 8 programs now, and I'm gonna try 'em all over.

By the way, does anyone else find it pretty stupid that you can buy a new computer for $2000, but it has no virus protection whatsoever... besides a 45 day trial for Norton Antivirus. Bleh.

I'll never hit one of those links again.

Right, go into the registry:

Start > Run > regedit

Then go into:

HKEY local machine > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Run

This will display the programs which are running at start up, delete the ones you think are causing you trouble and then try to delete the buggers ;)

Or you can simply go into the task manager and end the program, which then will enable you to delete it.

Or you can get a program like system mechanic or tuneup utilities 2004 which does it all for you. :)

Also did you try Stinger? I dunno you said Norton couldn't clean it but it might work. Doesn't Norton give an option to quarintine the file? That will put the file in a special place where it can't do anything. Kinda like sending it to prison.

Nope, worse. I won't mention it because you guys will hate me... but NO it WAS NOT the leaked beta.

Thanks for the tip, Simmo, thats pretty cool, but I guess Ctrl Alt Del does the same thing, right? Now I just have to be able to tell which programs are bad and which aren't. Heh.

I'll have to try Stinger out, too... is it free? Right now I'm using 4 anti-adware programs, Spybot, Ad-aware, Spydoctor, and Norton Antivirus, and they all seem to be working pretty well, but more would be great. :)

pr0n is good hmmkay?

EDIT- download SpywareBlaster, it prevents spyware and such from being installed in your comp in the first place.. that with an spyware removal prog (i use SpyBot) makes your comp pretty much spyware imune... (since i installed the spyware blaster, spybot never detected spyware again)

Thanks for all your help, guys, I've done everything you've said (still gotta run my system in SafeMode, though) and I've gotten rid of 200+ bad thingies.

I'm probably correct in assuming that once you have a massive adware attack like this, you won't ever completely get rid of the problem... I'm so upset, I need to cry now.

I was visiting this site and getting pop-ups all the sudden, and it was relieving when I fixed it. :)
