I was working last night on a BMW and just posting here to see what u think so far

bmw.jpg

I am a bit of a noob modeller and am so much better at mapping, The model so far is about 500-600 polgons. Thats about the same amount as a CS model. Looks prity good tbh :D

What type of BMW is that? And you are... erhm, missing something. :)
Doesnt help much to show it now, cant say if its good or not.

its a z3 not the convertable one. I will post better imkages as I get further and further on with it.

looks pritty good at the moment, i'm geussing its downe with splines, due to the holes :p

lookign good! Is this gonna be a highpoly model or a low poly model?

low polgon, with all the wheels etc... then it will be about 1200 polgons. Maybe give somone it to use in a hl2 mod or summat.

The shape looks good, but the mesh construction is a little messy. You could remove quite a few of the segments on the doors and hood without any visible change. Doing so will also make it easier to work with later in development.

One other thing to note is the inconsistant flow of edges and polygons between the different parts of the vehicle. The head and tail lights are sharp and need some rounding, while the body is overly smoothed. You want to have a consistant distribution of polygons throughout the entire model whenever possible.

Either way, it looks very nice and I'm sure it'll only improve as you continue to work on it.

ye only got the basic shape, still got all the side air pannels to do and also as u said make it more basic (less polgon) I modeller it to the an image plane. Some edges are where they are to make it easier for the modeller to skin it. Hense why it looks a bit messy.

u start of by creating a wire frame 2d rectangle turn it into a editable poly. my starting point was like having a small rectangle just above the top of the wheel. Then u go into edge mode and extrude it out editing it as u do. So basiclly i created everything from scratch. Easier than box modelling tbh.

what program did you use to model? i am so lost when i try to model...

-merc

no, i mean a rectangle made from lines, well in 3dsmax like when u create text. its done in lines. You can convert this into a polgon and make it 3d. Planes are 3d. Its just they are not formed into anything. At least I think thats correct anyway. Just bring up the tab tool bar in 3dsmax and go to shapes. They are all ones that u draw by hand. from simple lines to ready made stars etc...

I just finished 2 small scenes because I was bored

tbh it looks ****ing wicked to say how low polgon it is. Still got to put somekinda role cage and do loads of tweaking. Should be nice when I have finished

Btw u was asking about that thingy that isn;t anoying box modelling. I learnt how to do it from the jone of arch tutorial which I think any and every max user has done.

the 1st section of the jone of arch tutorial uses box modelling but the face is done with 2d thingy. Here is the URL to show u what I mean and how to do it:

http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/head1.asp

if u want to do the full tutorial start from the index @:

I do it like that to. I did my wolverine face like that (need to finish it). you have far more controll over your model when you do it like that

BTW.. exelent model

yes thats called splines... :p

pritty good model, keep up the good work, personally i prefer to box model (on a random note)

yeah i'm with you stone box modeling cars (or anything really) is so much easier. though when i started i lerned using splines. But for weapon models it's not a good method. anyway your model looks great did you create one side and mirror it? will there be an interior? and finally have you contacted the Halflife 2 Rally Mod cause i'm sure they could use the talent.

it is the bewst method for making cars but if its low poly u should have done it by box modeling.

ye i mirrored it, not much point in creating 2 sides and trying to make them the same. Also if u wanted to make imperfections (dint on one side) i could just turn it into a editable poly again and then its a full model.

Also spine modeling is so much easier. With box modelling u always make some really messy mistakes. Can't stand it tbh. With spine modelling all u got to do is use all your top/right/front instead of your perpective.

btw, I am hoping to join the http://opcoin.city-17.net/ team as a mapper. Dunno yet cos I am on trial atm.

^ my maps

nice stuff but nobody should really get any mappers untill the new map editor is released coz its a lot different.

edit: btw: ur a noob ?

mapping isn't different. All they have done is tweaked and made everything better as well as including a terrain editor and able to import models. Ow and now u can have multiple entites linked today. Its will done in hammer etc...

"edit: btw: ur a noob ?" < what do u mean by that?

lol soz, didn;t know what u ment. Cos I been mapping for hammer for 2 years and I fort u ment i was a hammer noob. I am a 3dsmax noob, only been modelling about 1 month. Had 3dsmax for about 4months. Just never really bothered to use it.

This model is good, nice work there, and i didn't make a completly and utterly irrelevant comment that was edited by stone to say this instead

Good lad, breakpoint - nice to know you are all grown up and mature.

IchI - If you aren't wanted for that other mod - we could really do with a couple more talented mappers for Operation Everlasting Shadow. Just give me, stone or badger a shout if you are interested.

Stone: I dnt see no double post :p

they did, its just people are trying to grab the crew that they can at the moment, in antisipation, as the isnt the SDK meant to be out this month :x

hmmmmm, I think i am gunna stick with CO-IN until i get rejected or added to the team. The have people in the army with a lot of experiance and know what they are doing. Its one of the only mods I know atm that is prity well organised and is actually going out and firing weapons to make sure the realism is correct. It also helps to get good situations done for the game with some people in the army.

it's a BMW I farlking love it!

after my porche I'll be getting an M5 or around there, that model needs some serious N-patch though (truform if ATi)

well ye mindless_moder because I am on trial and tbh, they still need some help. Even if I didn't get in the team I would seriously want them and help them get more people. They have good talent.

I am a noob but what does this mean "that model needs some serious N-patch though (truform if ATi)" do u mean turn it into an editable patch and make it into triangles to make it into its true gaming form. Mainly I havn;t done that eyt because its not complete :p

Ye, I just finished the wheel rims. They look alright. But I am gunna play with them a bit. Anyone got any ideas for how I can make them look better?
