Let's say that a person (who we'll call John) heard that the password used by a well known game developer (who we'll call Bob) had been compromised and somebody was posing as Bob at a forum. Now John was concerned that Bob's other accounts might be compromised so he checked a number of different sites where Bob had accounts and found that they were all using the same password. Then acting as a good Samaritan, John changed the passwords at those sites, sent Bob the information, and asked him to change the passwords. Now John is a trustworthy person and only has good intentions, so of course he did not make any posts or otherwise mess around with those accounts.

So let's say that several days afterward John hadn't heard anything back from Bob and was curious to know if the matter had been taken care of. But John didn't feel comfortable with trying to log into those accounts to check. John knows that Bob gets a lot of e-mail and was worried that the information he sent Bob may have been overlooked, so John felt that was a good enough reason to call Bob. During the conversation, Bob thanked John for looking out for him and assured John that he had changed the passwords.

Well John felt better knowing Bob had taken care of the matter. But after awhile curiosity got the better of John and he decided to check a couple of those sites just to make sure. When he did, John was a little suprised to find that the passwords hadn't been changed. But imagine the disbelief when John realized that Bob had actually been using those sites without yet changing the password.

Any similarity to actual people or events is purely coincidental. ;)

In other words, Gabe Newell needs to change his passwords?

john's the man.
and if bobs password isn't "gaben" anymore, and is something obscure, does it matter that john knows it?

No way! johns all trustworthy n stuff...good intentions n that...meh i wanna know if oct13 is john!

hmm i wonder if bob has any accounts on any porn sites...dont think john would have looked for that :naughty:

hey, it was probably Bob's password that allowed hackers into Bob's system in order to steal source code from Bob's game. (though Bob wouldn't admit it)

I really think Bob needs to re-think his password system.

You are weird.

If Gabe dosn't want people screwing with his stuff then he'll change his pw. Otherwise leave him alone. I know it was so traumatic for some people with this whole false gold statment thing, but give the guy a break.
He's making Half-Life 2. Forum passwords might just not be at the top of his list-o-concerns.

Oh I heard about this one... John's door got kicked in by the police and FBI for charges of impersonation and internet larceny. :O

Hmm.... the FBI gives a damn about a forum account....

Right.

Hmmmm, I think we should email bob and tell him to change his passwords. Maybe john should do it?

Pff, yeah...Everyone knows it was the CIA.
;)

Interesting little story there...I hope John finds his dog.

Moral of the story? Teh intarw3b is bad for you if you spend too much time on it.

Bob is the best, but don't forget about Bob's trusty PR sidekick, George!
