I thought I'd throw out some observations/techniques regarding bomb running. I'm sure this has been talked about before, but even if this topic is a dead horse that's been beat too often, it still deserves another whack or two.
After playing this morning and getting frustrated with a couple of guys who were doing some lame things as the bomb runners, I thought I'd list a few things that I've found useful as the bomb runner. Most of these are obvious, but I still see people making the same mistakes. So here goes:
1) Stay with the group: Often the Terrorists will split into a couple of groups, some going one way, and some the other. If you are the bomb runner, pick the largest of the groups. Even if this means you can't go to your favorite location. The bomb is more likely to get planted if you are with a group. Don't be a lone ranger and run off with the bomb by yourself. Needless to say, that's pretty lame. When you get killed, your teammates will have to now come back and find the bomb, and regroup to try to get it into one of the sites.
2) Stay in the middle of this group: I can't tell you how many times I've seen the bomb runner decide to "lead the way", only to be the first T killed when you meet resistance by the CTs. As a CT, let me tell you, if I see that bomb flying into the air and landing by your dead body, you just made my job easier as a CT. Because all I need to do now is guard that one bomb from other Ts getting it, instead of guarding two bomb sites. Conversely, as the bomb runner, don't stay at the back of the group. I also see a lot of bomb runners let the group go ahead thinking they'll be safer at the back of the pack. What often happens is the CTs circle around, pick off the bomb runner at the rear, meanwhile the rest of the Ts have made it into the detonation site, turn around and wonder where in the crap their bomb runner went! Then they have to go find the bomb and try to get it again. As the bomb runner, stay in the middle of the pack. Let the guys in the front force their way into the detonation site, while the guys in the back provide covering fire and watch the rear. You can provide covering fire as well.
3) Use crates, etc, as cover: Seems pretty obvious, but a lot of people ignore this one. A lot of the detonation sites have crates or something to hide behind as you are setting the bomb. Get behind these to give you as much cover as possible for the few seconds it takes to set the bomb. I've seen a lot of guys just set the bomb "in the open" and get picked off as they are setting the bomb. Learn what things can give you cover that are still in the detonation site radius.
4) The bomb is meant for planting, not carrying! No duh! But I'm willing to bet that we've all played in at least one game where the bomb runner either didn't realize he had the bomb, or he was more interested in getting a few more kills than planting the bomb. This morning, I was playing in a game, and the last guy left alive on our team was the bomb runner. There was still two CTs left. Instead of planting at one of the sites, he ran right past it and kept running around the map looking for CTs. It was driving the rest of us crazy. Finally, he got killed, the rest of us yelled at him, and he said "I didn't realize I had the bomb." Sheesh. A new player is allowed that mistake, but not a regular player. Play smart and keep your eye out to see if you are the bomb runner. Then, when you are, if you can plant the bomb, do it! It's much more satisfying to be the last player left alive on your team while being outnumbered by the CTs, play well enough to plant the bomb, and then get a detonation! Your teammates will appreciate it more.
5) Lastly, stay with the bomb runner, or go find the bomb: If you aren't the bomb runner, then accompany him. Stay with him. Even if he decides to be a lone ranger and runs off by himself, follow after him and help him out. And if you lose track of the runner, keep an eye on your minimap at all times, so you can go find him, or the bomb, if he's been killed. Get it and try for a detonation yourself with your remaining teammates.
Well, after saying all that, I have to say that I've been guilty of all of the above at some time or another. But I've gotten better over time. And I thought I'd pass these thoughts along so that others can learn from these mistakes. Hopefully, when you see that you are the bomb runner, it will help you to say "Oh, good" instead of "Oh crap".
