Books you've read. Red. Something

I've read quite a few books, so I don't remember all of them. I do, however, remember that the first book (As in, an actual novel, and not just Dr. Seus or the like) as Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which was infinitely better than that crappy movie. A few of the other books I read early on were Ringworld, a bunch of Starwars novels (The Corellian trilogy was the first, I think, followed by some of Zahn's books). More recently, I've started to read R.A.Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books (The Icewind Dale trilogy, the Dark Elf trilogy, the Cleric quintet, Paths of Darkness, and I'm near the end of the third Legacy of the Drow book. I have the first Hunter's Blades trilogy book, but I have not started to read it yet).

Others:
All of the books based on Blizzard games (11 of them now)
The Lord of the Rings
The Hobbit
The entire New Jedi Order series (21 books or so)
Clan of the Cave Bear
The Valley of Horses
All 5 Harry Potter books
A bunch of other Star Wars books
Animal Farm
The DaVinci Code
Angels and Demons
And countless others that I cannot remember.

Edit: Did I mention that I probably read too much for my own good? I actually finished the 5th Harry Potter book in one sitting, overnight. Between using the computer all day and reading that much, I'm probably going to be totally blind by 30.

Wasp Factory by Iain Banks.

Only recent book, too many and most have been mentioned that I've read at some point in my life.

You should read: 1984, Catcher In the Rye, Catch-22, The Lord of the Rings, all the Tom Clancy books, especially Red Storm Rising (possible exceptions being: Red Rabbit The Teeth of the Tiger and the Op-Center series), The Shining, Lord of the Flies, The Bourne Identity (yes it was a book before it was a movie), War of the Worlds and surprisingly, I found that the Harry Potter books were really good so you might want to consider those.

If nothing else, you should definitely read: 1984, Catcher In the Rye, Lord of the Flies, The Shining and Red Storm Rising.

If you only read one book: It should be either 1984 or Red Storm Rising

If you're interested, an online version of 1984 can be found HERE

Yay, people who read! Hard to find on the internet ^_^

Uh, anyways, I'm sitting here in the nation Library in Canberra right now, so i'll sniff around and look for some of these things. Oh, and I've read the Harry Potter books, read Animal Farm, read Da Vinci Code, read Do androids dream of electronic sheep?

David Eddings is apparently not well liked on the internet, according to book critics. Oh wells, he writes in whatever style he chooses. And I'm a big discworld fan - i just need to read the discworld Almanac and then I've read every one of them so far. (Go HE WHO SPEAKS LIKE THIS)

anything by Stephen Donaldson and Guy Gavriel Kay.

Seconded, particularly Guy Gavriel Kay. Tigana is probably my favourite fantasy book, The Fionavar Tapestry my favourite series :) (yes, even over LOTR)

Stephan Lawhead is also well worth checking out - especially The Pendragon Cycle.

Mark Z. Danielewski - House of Leaves.. this is still the guy's only real book, but damn is it good, there's about three different layers in the novel that intertwine and there's two main storylines that parallel in many ways, altogether it works together well, and the "main story" has a really cool concept - it's about a house that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, with none of the fairytale crap - this is definitely a mature read, though (sex, violence, drugs - the usual)
I highly reccomend the book, you won;t be able to put it down til you get to the end... and the way its formatted.. well, he had a helluvan idea

Hell yeah!

I would've introduced it this way: the book is about a tattoo artist who finds a manuscript in a dead man's apartment about a videotape about a family which moves into a house that is bigger on the inside than the outside. None of these things may exist--even within the boundaries of fiction.

But if you like to obsess, steer clear, because it will suck you in. And if you're already obsessing, head over to the house of leaves forum.

A few books I like have already been mentioned

Hearts in Atlantis - Stephen King
IT - Stephen King
Pattern Recognition - William Gibson
Redshift - Al Sarrantino et al.
Speaker for the Dead - Orson Scott Card (sequel to Ender's Game)

And Neil Stephenson's Cryptonomicon.

And Neil Stephenson's Snow Crash.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post. Why can't we delete posts?

I forgot to mention Lawhead. Good call.
I agree with you on Fionavar - Kay knows exactly how to twist your emotions. I defy anyone to read that trilogy and come away without a lump in their throat (at least!)

Oh, and if you know some good manga/anime, post that too. I'm just finishing up on a bunch of romantic comedy... so... uh... yeah.

Or should I (or someone, whatever) just make a whole new thread about that as well?

I don't read much manga, so I can't help there. Anime, however, I do watch. Do you prefer anime subbed, or dubbed? (Subtitled, or dubbed in english) Whatever the case, here's a few I liked.

Elfen Lied - I'm about half way through this series (Which is, if I remember correctly, 13 episodes), and I've liked it so far. It's got a lot of blood and gore, and a far share of nudity, so it's not for younger viewers. It's primarily horror and action, with a bit of romance and mystery. This series has been licensed, but I don't think the entire series is out in english yet.

Fullmetal Alchemist - The way it starts out would make you think not much more than another generic action anime, but it actually has a lot more depth than it lets on early in the series. It was airing on Adult Swim, but I'm not sure if they're currently playing new episodes. First few episodes are out on DVD, but you can find the entire series (52 episodes) online if you don't mind subbing.

Samurai Champloo - One of the best series I've seen in a long time. Great choreography in the fight scenes, great writing, and the animation is hardly average. It's out on DVD up to episode 17 (of 26), and also available online with subs.

Trigun - If you're a fan of anime, you've probably at least heard of Trigun by now. 26 episodes long. I'm tired, and I'm running out of things to say. Following descriptions will be much shorter.

Excel Saga - Perhaps the most random, weird, entertaining anime ever made.

Planet ES - Another good one. Google it if you want to know more.

Chobits - Romantic action comedy. Etc.

Rurouni Kenshin - Also good.

That's all for now.

Edit: Perhaps it would be best if a new thread was made for this, to avoid turning this into a threadjack.

Some authors you should look into:

Phillip K. Dick for a whacked out crazy sci-fi good time, much like Kurt Vonnegut only...more science.

Stephen King's Dark Tower series and The Stand.

...That's all I can think of for now. If you ever need comic recommendations, right here :).
