I think everyone here can agree the US borders need some serious attention, especially the US/Mexico Border, yet congress and the Bush administration do nothing about the situation. Here is my idea:
!DISCLAIMER! The following is in jest, a joke. I in no way condone this idea.
Protecting The US-Mexico Border from Illegals while stimulating the econmy at the same time.
The border is 1,951 Miles and is the busiest in the world. 1 mile= 5280 feet. 1951 miles = 10,301,280 feet.
My idea is to place a pillbox or a machine gun nest every 500 yards along the border.
500 yards = 1500 feet. 10,301,280 / 1500 = 6867.52 500 yard increments, round that up to 6,868.
So, one machine gun nest or pillbox per 500 yards equals 6,868 machine gun nests total.
A M19 fully automatic grenade launcher costs $80,000. Or so I was told when I was in the marines. Lets say 80,000 is the price ceiling for each weapon along the border.
6,868 * 80,000 = $549,440,000 for the cost of the guns.
Lets assume each pillbox has to have 5,000 rounds at $1 each.
$5,000 * 6868 = $34,340,000
Lets assume each pillox costs $10,000 to build suitably for two pepole.
$10,000 * 6868 = $68,680,000
Establishment cost for each bunker would be $652,460,000. Sixhundred fiftytwo million, fourhundred sixty thousand dollars.
6 People have to be employed per pillbox, 2 for every 8 hours. This is a crappy job and would probably be military. Lets say a $20,000/year salary for each person.
6 * $20,000 per person, per year = $120,000 per pillbox, per year. 6868 * 120,000 = $824,160,000/year for 41,208 people.
Lets say there is one superviser per 30 people or every 5 pillboxes. That person gets paid $35,000/year.
41,208 / 30 = 1373.6 or 1374 supervisors. $48,090,000/ year for 1374 supervisor's salary.
Because they is no way to tell how much upkeep and meals cost for each person lets say the cost is $200 million for other yearly upkeep like more bullets, facility repair, and compensation for hurt employees.
824,160,000 for workers + 48,090,000 for supervisors + 200 million for other stuff = 1,072,250,000 yearly upkeep.
Initial cost would be $652,460,00 or if we rounded up, 700 million dollars. Yearly upkeep would be 1,072,250,000 rounded up to 1.08 billion dollars yearly.
Now then using this source here, http://www.dslextreme.com/users/surferslim/text1.html, the speculate between 1 and 3 million illegal immigrants cross the border each year.
Lets say at the most, if we could apprehend tham all and send them back it would cost $500 per person to deport, for room and board, food, whatever else they need in "humanitarian aid.
500 * 3,000,000 = 1,500,000,000. That is 1.5 billion dollars annually. I am not doing the math on the people that were deported and then came back again.
After two years, enough money woul be saved to justify the install ment cost of $700 million for the pillboxes. After that almost 500 million dollars would be saved and could be spent elsewhere.
Now then, I don't advocate this at all. This idea is barbaric. I just felt like doing the math on it all to see how much money we could save if we did this.
Mine fields.
I am not good at geometry, so this might be wrong. Please correct me if it is.
I have no idea how much mines cost, probably not too much, but lets say $300 each. Lets say the field would be 1,951 miles long by 100 yards across. 10,301,280 * 300 feet = area. Area - length x width. A = 3,090,384,000 square feet. 3,090,384,000 / 3 = 1,030,128,000 square yards. Lets say there is one mine for every square yard. $309,038,400,000 or $310 billion one time cost. You also have to figure int he labor to load the planes with 1 billion mines and the fuel for the planes to fly over and drop them all. No telling what that is.
