Boring against a good team?

Just had a game where I was playing a very good team. And because they knew exactly how to combat any situation, it was impossible to win any level as survivors or infected.

Literally Hunters were shot out of the air or bashed off before any damage could be done, survivors were bashed off Smoker's tongues before they could even get more than 2 ft away from the rest of the gang, Boomers were shot before one globule of bile left their mouths and Tanks literally scrambled fruitlessly after 4 survivors shooting them with bullets and fire.

Now, in my opinion, the most fun I've had with Left 4 Dead is scraping through by the skin of my teeth, covered in bile, limping across the finish line, laughing so much in real life that I've had trouble aiming. There was a genuine sense of team spirit when you're all laughing at someone's misfortune etc.

So I put it to you that we know the levels so well that no possible Smoker hiding place is a surprise, no possible set-piece a challenge and no possible Tank environment a difficulty for an established team. Through a mixture of exploits, corner-camping and twitch-shooter reactions, a well-practised team can literally storm a level with no damage at all.

And in my opinion, this is no fun. It's almost no wonder people rage-quit so much. I don't think it's rage so much, more boredom.

What do you guys think?

I think it was all your fault.

Also, having more than two players helps.

You're going to get this in any game, though. Seriously, I cannot think of a single game that doesn't have dedicated players that live and breathe the maps they play on. Whilst I agree that every once in a while you are going to come across a team who know a map like the back of their hand, it isn't the majority. I can play No Mercy and Smoker a whole bunch of people from the ledge above the subway tunnel safe room exit and then in the same night I might come across a few players that know to make a break for the steps ASAP before I can position myself up there. You've just had the unfortunate luck of being paired up with a team of friends. I feel the same sense of dread whenever I come across a team of close friends who all know each other in Halo 3, but then I'm sure other people feel the same way when they hear me and my friends all talking and laughing together on a team, or when a randomer comes across a team of [HL2.net] tags in L4D.

Just how it is.

I agree it was a bit tedious, but Glenn's team had struck a groove and worked well with each other from the beginning, while we never really got organized as a team. We dropped and replaced players a couple times before we got stuck with just two.

I'll admit it was a little bit whitewashy, but I think it's down to the communication between us, and the fact we try and gel as a unit for the tournament. I'm sure when you guys put together your 1st team you will be a much mightier force.

A bit? :p

356 against 7999?

On a serious note, did you enjoy yourselves? Surely it was just like playing through a campaign on Easy?

*hits with log again*
I think that that is too overpowered, it should take enough damage so it's as if the tank has hit you into the red (pretty much 3/4 of your health). Also, definitely need to fix the "rolling at a quarter inch a second incap log" bug.

Rape is ever-enjoyable.
I think rape implies that the people doing the raping earned it somewhat.

I enjoyed it. Helping me get used to how the team plays and communicates :) Also gave us a bit of a chance to discuss tactics =D

It was unfair on you guys. Though, with a proper team, voice comms, and no members leaving/joining every 5 mins you would have been a better team.

I hate clans like this, all they care about is winning and getting through the level as fast as possible. They are no fun to play with at all.

Point is that such teams also prefer to play against other, similarly skilled teams.

Getting raped DOES indeed suck. But whenever I get in that position, it makes me want to get my team to use MORE tactics. If you're getting raped, it's for an obvious reason. Coordinate more as infected, and stick together and keep each other informed as survivor

I know what you mean, Left 4 Dead has become a routine as most people always do the same thing: hide in that corner, rush that part, hide in those vents, etc...

It's just like in any game really. A team of more experienced players who know everything there is to know about the game they're playing are going to rape a less experienced team no matter what. I was playing TF2 last night and our team was raping the other team and it was pretty dam boring. The top 4 players pretty much did everything to win the game. One of them even said "Don't win so quickly otherwise the whole team will rage-quit".

If I play with really good teams like this - I like convincing everybody to go into rush mode where everybody (both teams) sprints through the levels as fast as they can, not stopping for anything or anybody (even when an ally could use help - unless you can help them while running). It turns into a hectic last-man-standing kind of game. Whichever team makes it the furthest wins of course :D

You know, one night, I played in a group of strangers. The opposite team was obviously friends. In lobby, they kept talking to each other, setting plans. I thought my team was going to be beaten very painfully.

But it turned out all four members of the opponent teams rage-quited.

Although I don't know the people in my team, but we all knew the game very well. There seemed to be a strange connection between us when we play, despite that we are total strangers. It was a very joyful moment.

I love when that happens.

Yeah, same. There's nothing better in online gaming than kicking the ass of a really cocky team.

I had a match were all but one of the other team rage-quit. So what we did was have a one on one duel. One survivor would try to get as far as possible against the lone infected. It was surprisingly tough, but really fun.
