My friend is letting me borrow his Win XP Home edition to install on my new computer since I do not feel like Win XP HE is worth 80$.

After I install it, will I need to use an activation code or if it comes with a cd key? I have yet to ask him if he needed to use it or not.

Is it? :P I don't want to pay for it though, but I guess I'll have to.
Do you know a place that sells it for less than $80? I really think $80 is way too much for XP.

yea i was looking for xp also, and also wanted to borrow a friends, but if im gonna buy it im not paying 100 bucks for something thats basically on everyones computer and is standard. I'm with you shamrock $80 is hella too much. The cheapest one i found was for $73 w/cd and key, here it is i hope it helps:Windows Xp w/cd & key

Yeah you need a cdkey. And yes, you will need to activate it via the internet after 30 days.

Do you think I should just use the beta version of Windows XP 64 bit for 360 days? Its free. I think thats what I am going to do. Or whenever I get a job buy XP PRO.. I'm too young for a job. Only 15.. :-(

I wouldent use the Beta XP, because the driver support is lacking, so its not ideal for gaming. You're going to want to get XP, however possible.

Well, I am sure I can get someone to get me XP for Christmas even though its a day away. :)

does anyone know if my dell version of xp home will install the right stuff for my new mobo, cpu, etc...?

$80 bucks?!
i paid $250 for my copy a couple of years back...so be happy that u found it for $80.

Nope. Probably won't. Most copies of Windows that come with a prebuilt have the motherboard set to only work with that copy. They're more of a recovery CD than a real installation cd.

And the $80 is still overpriced. It is not worth it!

Pfft.. I won't be buying it then. :) I am going to have someone else buy it for me. Screw Microsoft making us pay $80 for an OS.

desighn sofware which i use costs thausands of pounds and a computer with out a os is basicly a paper weight so it is worth it. office also costs around £180 rember thats in £ not $

and how do you plan to accomplish this?

windows xp full install costs £180 in computer shops in the uk. thats like more than $300 and you moan about 80 bucks?, which is like £50. thats not much more than a game costs over here

But its Win XP Home for $80. I could understand if it was PRO at $80, because even PRO isn't worth $150. I really am disappointed in Microsoft.

Home should be $40, and PRO should be $80

Agreed. Then I might actually buy Pro.
But I guess I'll just stick with my free Pro Volume edition...
:imu:
Check out the one that says Dell.. It says it works on all PCs.. So would that mean the reinstallation cd from my Dell would work on my new PC?
If the CD isnt already registered, then yes.

Hmm.. I might as well try that. And if that doesn't work, well then I guess I am screwed. :P Or at least until I have someone buy PRO for me. :)

Microsoft are allready to powerfull. I'm running a pirated version and I own 3 legal versions of the blasted thing. Two came from my IT teacher and the third came free with a bunch of computer gear I ordered wholesale.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. Spending 80 usd on an OS, one of the main things required to use your computer that you shelled 5000 usd on. That's only 30 bucks more than a game!

Really, if you take in all the time and effort the people behind the OS spent on this product, you might think different. Years and years looking at letters and numbers and 1's and 0's, just trying to make something we can use. But the guys in the security team should be fired.

Well, guess i'm not too pissed cause I gotta pay a 4'th of what you're paying for home to get pro. It's good being the neighbor to one of the guys behind MSN and Longhorn.

um... yeah, where did you get your money tree? I want one.

I just mean, say you just got a great, qualilty enthusiast pc. All the gaming parts you bought are pretty much useless for gaming till you get that os up and running.

Yeah, I should ask for a money tree for xmas. Think santa will get the email in the next six hours? :bounce:

Who cares if it's illegal. I'm 100% sure that at least 30% and over of all XP installations...they are illegal. That whole "Blue List" key generator (which I have, but I finally got a LEGAL OEM copy of XP Pro) gives you a valid CD key so you can install SP1 and SP2. Besides, Bill Gates is RICH, who cares.

If you really believe this... well, hopefully you get whats coming to you.

$80 hella cheap for that kind of program. All other programs that are limited to what XP can do cost up to $2000.

So $80 dollars for XP is cheap cause its used to cost $200
