Goddamnit BP.

Scientists now worry that much more than oil is leaking out at dangerous levels, including a massive amount of methane, and the BP-imposed blackout that is keeping scientists and reporters away from the leak is only escalating fears. Texas A&M University's Dr. John Kessler, an oil industry expert, theorizes that the leak at the ruptured well could be 40%, and with the volume that's going into the water, that's a lot of methane. As if that wasn't bad enough, a huge gash has been discovered not 10 miles from the BP leak, which itself could be adding more oil and methane to the mix. So, what happens? Well, if the methane concentration in the Gulf -- which Kessler and his team have said is "one million times the normal level" -- erupts, it could create tsunamis, dead zone areas devoid of oxygen, poisonous rainfall and even collapse the sea floor.

Eh, that's only a solution when it's not near America.

Another 2012 event then. It is all the fault of National Geographic opening that door to the underworld in Belize.

2012 duuuude, it's comin.

Edit: Damn you, Shaker.

Right I guess we're half way through The Kraken Wakes and I simply missed the beginning? The ocean's coming for us!!

This is completely insane. What are we on, day 84 of the spill now? This sucks hardcore.

I actually haven't heard anything about the spill in a week or so. I thought it would have been sealed up by now. :/

While methane releases (and sometimes explosions) are fairly common in the ocean and have happened on levels that could (And probably did) cause extinctions, that has pretty much nothing to do with this oil spill. I mean this is like a pinprick in your skin. Yeah blood will come out until it is blocked, but it's not going to somehow increase the pressure and explode all of your blood out. If there was enough pressure for this to happen it would have happened immediately. As more oil/gas comes out, pressure can only decrease. If anything - this prevents or, more likely, delays a massive release of gasses.... assuming they are still building.

There are so many crazy theories about what can happen with a 2 foot hole in the ground. Essentially the worst that can happen is happening right now. Ridiculous amounts of oil are going in to the Gulf. The worst escalation that can happen now is the killing off of a some fragile lifeforms that could chain together a mass gulf extinction. It could happen a lot of different ways...but they would all be pretty terrible.

edit: An update on the spill for anyone who hasn't been following - They've currently removed the siphoning cap that ways pulling in 15-25k barrels of oil a day and are working a multi-step process cap that will coincide with the breakthrough of one of the two drilled relief wells either today or early this week. The initial parts of the cap are going to gauge to see if it can be capped entirely (ie if the pressure is low enough) or will need to be capped partially and siphoned while the relief well breaks through. http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/07/12/gulf.oil.disaster/index.html?hpt=T2

Heh, I like how the related news on that site has escalated (if we assume the top ones are newer... I couldn't see the dates anywhere).

But seriously, large methane releases from permafrost and whatnot are some scary shit. Been meaning to read more on them actually, but anything deep sea gives me the willies as it is. D:

bp is keeping a blackout form scientists and reporters?

didnt knew that

Who didn't know that this would completely **** up our planet from week 1? As we sit here and people go out in their computerized fishing boats and chase down the very last fish in the ocean, it doesn't really matter any more.

The best part? The oil dispersants being sprayed over the slicks attack the lipid bilayers of cells. It passes right through skin and causes your cells to burst.

Yeah I don't know anything about that, but it sounds like more unfounded doomsayer speak. Not to discredit it or anything... I just need sources before I believe something outright. I mean I am aware that many of the dispersants being used are not widely tested in the conditions present or held to safety standards, but it seems like a stretch to say that they essentially explode cellular organisms they come in contact with. You'd think someone at some point would have touched it and... while their skin was exploding... said "hey maybe this isn't better than oil."

I wish I could read all of the crazy things people are saying will happen. THe last one I read before this (from a crazy conspiracy theorist "Doctor") said that the oil was sitting on magma and would create a "volcano" and collapse and so many other terrible things. At least this one is founded in a bit of fact with methane existing in the quantities mentioned. Still kind of crazy.

The shitty part about this is that oil has spread so much already and is being constantly dispersed... it's pretty much guaranteeing the toxicity of the gulf. It's not being removed it's just being spread out. Wouldn't it be something if 6 months to a year from now the UK and the rest of Europe get this gigantic blob of organic death and oil remnants sweeping on to their shores? That's just something I was thinking about... assuming it can make it that far. Chances are it will probably be deposited along the shores of Florida before that.

Dispersant is just to get the oil out of sight, out of mind. After all, nobody likes seeing an oil slick on the ocean.

The world is going to end in one massive, explosive, wet fart from the Gulf's ass.

On a more serious note, it absolutely enrages me that BP is attempting to save face and keep their company afloat after all of this mess. As far as I'm concerned, all of BP's assets in North America should be seized and liquidated and the money from that spent on cleaning up the Gulf. As far as I'm concerned causing an environmental disaster of unparalleled gravity and magnitude like this pretty much forfeits their right to continue existence as a corporation and I cannot describe how angry I get seeing BP commercials on TV with some friendly-looking BP employee acting all heartfelt about how "We are going to do whatever it takes to fix this". If that's the case, stop spending money on commercials for your damn public image and ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM. Rage.

Meh. Bring on the post apocalypse, I might finally get to use my crowbar and survival rations.

Also, and this is only partly related, and based on massive generalisation; I find it hard to sympathise for the people affected by this disaster when they come out with crap like "THIS IS WORSE THAN 20 KATRINAS!" (true quote I heard on the news). I'm sorry, but that's just disrespectful to the victims of Katrina. They lost their homes, families and friends; you just have a few oily ducks. I will seriously choke a bitch if I hear another one of these hypocrites who bleat and wail because their plight is so far worse than Haitian earthquake victims, the tsunami victims, the 9/11 aid workers...

Hmm. Well I think that'd be one pretty nice way to kick off WWIII, yeah. And also that can't happen anyway, because Tony Hayward is part of the Illuminati.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF you are making me so angry right now. This oil spill is so much more serious than some f*cking hurricane or plane crash that killed a few thousand people. All due respect to the dead, of course; but I'd wager it's more disrespectful to point to those tragedies and say, "See, it's not so bad" than to realise that humankind is insignificant in the face of the environment.

I never said it wasn't, and I don't disagree with you, frankly.

However it does infuriate me to see these people, clearly still comfortable and safe in their homes, coming out with such genius quotes.

BP is keeping scientists away because if the actual flow rate is calculated BP could be fined millions, possibly even billions of dollars. With the actual flow rate unknown and the total amount of oil spilled into the gulf unknown BP stands a chance to successfully sway the government to fine them significantly less then they would have had to if the flow rate had been properly measured.

(I'm an Illuminati operative.)

Now I remember why I avoid threads about this. If I think about this crap for more than 2 minutes I get so spitting mad I can't even see straight, compounded by my frustration at NOT BEING ABLE TO DO A DAMN THING ABOUT IT.

Who'd like to place a wager that the cap gets removed in the next 48 hours?

I'd like to wager $50 that this becomes an ecological holocaust by Christmas.

Interesting fact: the Exxon Valdez spill's total volume escapes from the pipeline leak every 1 to 2 weeks - and the Deepwater Horizon explosion was 12 weeks ago now. Do the math.

I suck at math and this is an extimate but 165,000,000 gallons which is what Virus said. this is going to plague our coastline for longer than I expected.

Plan B: start colonizing Mars

I hope you're joking about your plan b.

We'll get past it... it's just going to be devastating for a lot of wildlife.
