Silent throughout the nearly 10 years since his brain was damaged during a roof collapse, a former firefighter has shocked relatives and caregivers with some surprise words.

Donald Herbert went into a coma more than nine years ago, when falling debris left him pinned without air for several minutes.

Although he emerged from the coma 10 weeks later, he remained been unable to see, recognize voices or communicate in a meaningful way.

But on Saturday, sitting in a wheelchair in his suburban Buffalo, New York nursing home, Herbert suddenly spoke out.

"I want to talk to my wife," Herbert said, to the surprise of staff at the Father Baker Manor nursing home where he has lived for the past seven years.

Wow, quite the extraordinary thing. :)

Think of everything he's missed.

We've been through so much since then.

That is an amazing story, is he recovering from the brain damage? I know that is impossible to fully recover, but their are jobs that can be moved to other non-damaged parts of the brain, so perhaps that is what happened?

Got me. This is one for the nueroscientists though.

hehhe I found the same thread in that ..."other" forum ..the one run by the right wing crazies ...here's the topic starters comments:

"Listen up liberal's this is why we should always choose life, Terry could have lived!"

on topic: bully for him, he's got a lot of catching up to do

Whoa... thatd suck being 'out' for 10 years... he probly doesnt even know what the 'War on Terrorism" is. :(... hed be like, whats September 11th?

Anyways, thats kinda weird...

.... :O

A-freaken-mazing.

I dont know how I would react just waking up one day in a wheelchair and being told ive been out for 10 years.

Thats like...whoah.

Protest Warrior?
Edit: Oooh wait I've found the thread where Bodacious invites the nuts.

On topic:
Terri Shviao (spelling): Brain Dead
This guy: Brain Damaged

Saw this on the news. He thought his son was still too young to talk.

He really needs to catch up on things.

(Good thing his wife didn't re-marry )

Wow thats amazing. Hope he fully recovers.

danimal weren't you on 3,700 something posts last week?

He's a mod, he can poke his postcount around as much as he wants.

Its like traveling in time, who was president 10 years ago?

That is crazy, things will be so weird for him if he recovers enough to be fully aware.

All the things he has missed.

Speaking on a purely political point of view, i think that 10 years worth of ignorance towards the current BS politics would have been a welcome thing, on my part.

Congrats to that man, may he lead a long and fruitful rest-of-his-life.

Just imagine. That could have happened to Terri Schiavo, and she would be alive and well with her friends and family.

But she's dead. Tough break, Terri.

Terri Shiavo is in a better place now, much better then a hospital ward, so give it a bloody break.

Because her brain stem was still active and functioning. She had lost pretty much all of her temporal lobe, the section of the brain that houses consciousness.

Terry Schiavo had ZERO chance of this happening. Large sections of her brain were physically gone. This dude just had something jarred around in his head that made him mostly comatose for the last decade. They're totally different conditions and cases.

What sort of state is the fireman in, is he still brain damaged but able to talk now, or did he leap out his chair, held a 20minute debate about politics before playing chess?

Either way, it is truely amazing to see that the human body is a lot more resiliant then people give it credit for.

She's dead now and it was for the best, i'd certainly wanna be dead if i was like that.

but nobody is asking what you would want if u were in that condition.
everyone wanted to/wants to know what she wanted... anyway this is off topic.

this man has alot of catching up to do... and quite the first few words to say when finally speaking :)
