School decides breath mints are lookalike drugs
(Category: Ohio )

9 Students Sent To Hospital After Eating Mints

A student at Jackson Memorial Middle School brought a package of Blast Energy SuppleMints to school and shared them with his classmates. These peppermint breath mints resemble Altoids and contain 15 mg of caffeine per serving of 6 mints. For reference, a Coke contains 46 mg of caffeine. The students were taken to the hospital, treated and released. The boy who brought the mints was suspended for 10 days for possession of a look-alike drug.

Cheryl Haschak, superintendent of the Jackson Local school district, said the suspension was for violating the school's ban on drugs, which covers drug-free items that look like pills.

Police estimate about 39 mints were unaccounted for and could have been eaten by the students.
...
Police were investigating and said they would file charges if the mints contained illegal substances. Caffeine is legal.

"Possession of a look alike drug"?

What a stupid charge. They're friggin mints.

Suspending someone for eating mints. I think, seeing as this happened in America, that he should sue. I mean it would be pathetically easy to win a court trial, you just say that "I bought them from a supermarket and was not informed mints were illegal", then go on to say that the 10 day suspension was severely affecting his education, and he feels he may get a lower grade for not knowing some of the curriculum etc etc...

Oh crap. I take like 10,000+ polos a year.

I'm so screwed.

How much a crime-free haven is that place that the police have time to investigate mints?
I would've told the headteacher to f*ck himself and find and try the mints himself. Then, when he's buzzin' off his tits on ecstasy, I'd arrest him. For fun.
I'd be an awesome police chief.

As an aside - I heard somewhere that excessive mint consumption can lead to impotence, although I doubt it a little bit.

I remember Saddam in Gulf War I banned the army from having white anything so they could not surrender. Was your school using similar reasoning?

I know people who did Ketamin (a horse tranquilizer, for those of you who don't know) in school. For the first time. They f*cked themselves up really badly, had to go to hospital, etc. Morons :hmph:
Try everything once if you wish, but in school? That's just retarded. Are you trying to prove something?

Oh my god, that to me was the funniest thing ever. I was cracking up hardcore.

lol, in school I take my altoids like a tab of acid, it really gets looks from the staff

It said 6 mints had 15 mg of caffine and a coke has 46 mg. You'd have to eat 18 mints to get as much as 1 coke. Then how many did they have to eat to get hospitalized?

18 * X where (X/6)/15 is the ammount of mg caffien it takes to hospitalize a person.

I s'pect they were hospitalized because they thought the mints were drugs, and took appropriate action. Hm.

This gives me such an urge to take mints to school to see what they say. We can't eat stuff in class, though. Some people sniff stuff at lunch.

ahaha
mints...i dont really eat em that much cause they dont do anything for me ;(

Oh I thought they just ate too many mints. I didn't really read article that thoroughly. I was going to say they'd need to eat an ass load of mints to get hospitalised.
