Brightness issues

Lately ( I don't know why ) objects in HL2 and Counter Strike decide to go all dark on me.
Sometimes they are fine, but when I play again objects (such as wooden crates, lockers, fences, chairs etc) are really dark.
If I put my flashlight on them, they look normal.
Look at the pics.

Can anyone out there help me with this problem? I've tried adjusting the brightness levels in video settings, that doesn't work.
The dark objects are too dark in proportion to the rest of the HL world.

Sounds like you're using an older GeForce card. Those have been notorious for producing effects like that.

Could it be because I'm overclocking and today is very hot in Australia?

i get it if i change video setting on one of my nvidia machines without restarting. or if i alt-tab out of the game and back. save game and restart is the only fix for me. doesn't happen on my ATI machines, though.
